Civ V - One World Speculation Thread!

I doubt we'll get a third expansion, let alone a third DLC Run - every Civ game since III has had two expansions. Besides, 40 civs is a phenomenal amount for a Civ game, and I'm happy with it.

That's what I've been trying to say (although we would get a second DLC Run).

I'm betting there is one more DLC run as well.

Though, speaking of DLC and the scenarios that usually come with said scenarios, I wonder if there'll be a return of the Crossroads scenario from Beyond the Sword (I think it was). It totally would fit the mostly speculated theme of the expansion that I had in mind, which is a focus on the economic side of the game.

It would also make religion spread a tad bit more nifty, as well as espionage.

On the note of a third expansion:

Personally, a part of me wishes we don't get a civ 6 and instead just get bigger and better expansions. I felt the same way about halo reach. I felt the series had reached an apex to where any more changes would destablize the whole thing.

However, I think civ 5 does have some fundamental flaws that cannot be fixed via expansions, so there's that. I do still feel that we should continue to get expansions for civ 5 until we hit that wall of things that cannot be fixed.

There's no rule on the amount of xpacs, hell look at the Sims. Not being able to change gameplay/flaws via xpacs is not impossible would just take a bit longer.

If there was a third expansion pack, I would expect that there would be no DLC after the release of the new Expansion pack. DLC takes time and if some is released shortly after, it would almost certainly spell the end of the release cycle. That said, if there is no DLC... who knows... I doubt they would, but I don't really have anything to base that on apart from the number of expansions they've had for the last two versions of the game.

I don't think it's just a question of reaching an apex of gameplay (which is entirely subjective anyway). There is also the practical consideration of technology. Processors, graphics engines, programming languages, video cards, monitors and TV screens are constantly being improved, altered, and evolved. People are going to want a game that takes advantage of everything the latest hardware and software can offer. After a while any game would simply become obsolete, no matter how many expansions were released for it.

As an analogy, imagine if Super Mario World were determined to be the pinnacle of Mario platforming games, and so Nintendo only ever released additional levels for SMW on the Super Nintendo. Eventually people would get tired of it, and furthermore, fewer and fewer people would be able to play the game as technology advanced far beyond the now-primitive capabilities of the SNES. I'm not saying SNES games aren't still fun, but it would be silly if all games stayed at the level of development of 20 years ago.

Another analogy, imagine if Firaxis decided that Civ II was the pinnacle of Civilization games. No matter how many expansions they released for it, eventually there would be virtually no computers left capable of running such an archaic game. People might be able to nurse along their Windows 95/98 machines to continue playing, but nobody else would be able to play.

Some franchises may jump the shark after too many installments, but a lack of new installments kills the IP altogether.

^^this

Id also like to add, considering the debate surrounding a potential second expansion's capacity to deliver "new features" that enhance gameplay, I highly doubt there would be anything substantive to add with a third expansion.
Substantive meaning : religion/espionage/colonies/corporations/etc, not wonders and new civs.

Come on. Make an announcement already. We've known about it for ages now! X(

I would rate it as quite probably that an announcement will be made in the next 24 hours.

The announcement for Gods & Kings made it to this forum at around 2 pm GMT, so based on that I'd say there will be announcement in roughly 22 hours and 20 minutes. That said, it could well be at any point tomorrow (in America) or any Thursday following.

Let's hope it's in 22 hours and 20 minutes.

Based on past announcements, how much information is usually in them? I wasn't around for the G&K announcement, so I don't remember what they told us. Do they usually just say "this exists", do they include a list of features, maybe some screenshots?

Based on next week's full moon rising in Aquarius and the alignment of Jupiter and Venus, I'd put the announcement next Tuesday at 10:23 AM Pacific time.

Ok, just kidding. This is getting nuts.

Here is the thread from the announcement of Gods & Kings.

Fans of Civilization V have been begging me for an answer to this question for quite some time: will Civilization V get an expansion pack?

Today I am extremely excited to tell you all that yes, it will! Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods & Kings is currently slated for a late Spring 2012 release.

It will come as no surprise to those of you who are familar with expansion packs for previous Civilization games that Gods & Kings will add more techs, units, buildings, Wonders, and playable Civilizations. But what about the big brand new game elements that will change the way you conquer the world? Let me lay it out for you:

Tons of New Stuff. I know I just mentioned it, but I want to draw attention to just how many new things we've got here: 27 new units, 13 new buildings, 9 new wonders, and 9 new playable civilizations. Among the new civilizations are the Netherlands (William I, Prince of Orange), the Celts (Boudicca), and the Mayans (Pacal the Great).

Religion. That's right; quite possibly the most requested major addition to the game is coming in the Gods & Kings expansion. Using the new "Faith" resource, you'll be able to found your own religion and grow it from a simple Pantheon of the Gods to a world-spanning fully-customized religion.

Reworked Combat System. The expansion has a reworked combat system along with an AI that places more emphasis on balanced army composition. Among the changes to the combat system is the addition of melee naval units, which will force you to really rethink the way you execute your naval assaults.

Enhanced Diplomacy, with Espionage. In addition to being able to establish embassies with your rival civilizations, spies will now be an important part of how you conduct your foreign affairs. Surveilling foreign cities, stealing advanced techs, and garnering influence with city-states are some of the things you'll be able to do with this new powerful mechanic.

New City-States. With religion being added to the game, it only made sense to introduce Religious city-states which will interact with your religion in special ways. In addition, Mercantile city-states will be attractive for those of you who love to grow your civilization's treasury. All city-states will use the greatly expanded quest system, making city-states more dynamic and diplomatic victories more challenging, while decreasing the importance of gold when dealing with city-states.

New Scenarios. Three new scenarios will be coming in Civilization V: Gods & Kings. Experience the fall of Rome, explore the medieval era, and my personal favorite: a unique scenario in a Victorian science-fiction setting.

So there you have it. What do you think? I'm sure you guys have tons of questions, so come on over to our forums and let us know! Or if you'd prefer, you can also reach us on Twitter or Facebook. We'll be reading all of your questions!

So we'll basically get a name, the key features, a handful of civs and an idea of what it will have, as well as a hint at a release date and some screenshots. If announced tomorrow, it will most likely be during the week of June the 17th or 24th, with the date of release dependant on region to some extent.

Awesome, thanks for doing the legwork.

If Menzies is right about any of this, I will consider posting a picture of me eating a hat.

Easy to say; if he's right, then we are going to be busy enough to care about your hat.

But I really hope he's right.

In my opinion it's more likely that an announcement will be made between 15 days and 1 month considering that Civ 5 Gold was available only a few days ago. 2K will try to capitalize on the new release and then announce Civ V:OW. It makes more sense from a commercial point of view.

There's nothing better commercially than shoving all the previous content in a block and announcing new cool stuff that requires it.

The expansion is the commercial drive for gold just as much as gold is the commercial drive for the expansion
