Civ4 Beyond the Sword Patch v3.17 is out

You're supposed to use the uninstall program.

Right, which is why I mentioned that that didn't work.

To be more specific, I tried both the game's uninstall option and XP's Control Panel's. Neither worked after the aborted autopatch.

It's cool, I'll reinstall XP when I go home in a couple weeks. I'll just have to think of something else to do on the flight.

Thanks guys.

usually really these directories are whats disallowing the reinstall:

Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)

I didn't read the post with all the detailed instructions for removal, but I do know that Civ puts registry entries which is uses to track which versions you have.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Firaxis / Sid Meier's Civilization IV (or complete or whatever you installed)

That key will house each of the expansions and their versions -- delete the whole thing. You may want to save the subkey before deleting, but if you've deleted all the files from your HD, why bother? Just be careful with your registry. :)

well almost - the control panel leaves lots of stuff - do the stuff below for a clean reinstall (its the gazillionth repost of this here - so I did not adapt it to your case, but it lists all possible remnants):

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.17 (download it fresh from here).

Well, I just use the Remove Software option (which triggers the Uninstall program).

for some people here it does not work - note how this is the first thing I list ;) - and it leaves a lot of the things I list sitting around indefinitely anyways...

Can't comment on standard programs not working, but if you uninstall plus clean up the remaining fragments from the Pogram Files you're still left with invisible remnants? (Just checking if I get what you're saying, as I'm a technical moron.)

the installation information stuff and the my games (mostly the application data\my games) stuff gets not deleted reliably by any of the uninstall routines. Usually this is not a problem (apart from cluttering your harddrive) - but sometimes it interferes with reinstalls - especially if the previous install got somehow corrupted.

Well, I wasn't able to uninstall it because the autoupdater broke it and it wouldn't uninstall. So I deleted the Firaxis folders, so I could at least use the hard drive space. But the Add/Remove programs list still has SM's Civ4, at 69mb's. And when I put the first install disk in, it says "Play" not "Install."

Eh, I'm going home in a few weeks and then I'll do a clean install of Windows, that'll solve that problem and hopefully a few others.

Like EmperorFool said a few posts back. Your problem is that, although you deleted the directories, the registry keys are still on your computer. This is why you can't reinstall. I would suggest either manually deleting the Civ4 reg keys or googling Registry Cleaning or some thing similar, there are lots of free tools that will remove unneed reg keys.

Just a question: If you manually start the setup file on the DVD (not using the autorun feature), then the game will not allow you to install it? That would be very odd.

as stated already: deleting the installation information files usually does the trick for a reinstall... the registry keys then point nowhere and are ignored by the installer.

usually the installer quits saying a version of it is already installed - especially if that version is of a higher patch version...

Glad that worked for you, but I was just pointing out the EF posted the right way to fix the problem.

Well CCleaner has deleted a lot of Civ4 flavored files and gives my registry a clean bill of health, but . . .

IF deleting the installshield information files does not help
edit the registry manually:
search and delete these keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8} -> Civ4
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228} -> Warlords
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Uninstall\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989} -> BtS

Note: use regedit with caution - and do set a system restore point before doing so. While this is the *right* way of getting rid of the game (I agree with Jeckel here) it is also dangerous :)

I have a slight problem downloading this patch, was trying to add a mod to the game but it needs 3.17 for proper UI etc. but i tried using the ingame updater, i get a message the first time saying update error try to click anything and it says "cannot continue until current patching process is complete" although its not patching and the second time the message saying update error doesnt appear but still have to use the Task Manager to get out of the game!, im totally lost and have no idea how to manually add the mod from a mirror, tried sticking it in the BTS patches folder but it didnt take it on, just sorta left it there but doesnt use it, any suggestions?

Colonies do (and always have), vassals don't. Are you sure it isn't a colony?

It turns out the vassal didn't get all my techs in one turn, but seemed to acquire inside of 4 turns or so. Perhaps they're trading like crazy with other civs. Seems hard to believe they could fly through the tech tree with such speed. This is the second time in this game that a capitulated vassal of mine has caught up in tech within a few turns.

At this point, I'm just making sure that nothing changed with the new patch on this issue.

@JEELEN humm Franks, like everybody surrendered lots of time:

- 'french' franks surrendered to the Norman by selling them Normandy
- 'german' franks & wallons were beaten by 'french' franks at Bouvines (1214)
- 'french','german','english' & 'norman' franks surrendered during crusades

But as they were the only one to keep the Frankish language, frenchs are probably to be considered as the descent of Franks, more than the germans. BtW in German, France is Frankreich -> Empire/Kingdom of the Franks

Ok,ok I love to be off-top and that's bad :(
hey guys! i don't know how history is taught in your countries. it is a general rule that, each country teaches history in its own view. So it is normal for you, to think different.

plus, i also know like the following. if you care about, click the spoiler ;)

Spoiler :

1st: historical franks are not a race. Germans are a race. Franks are one of the Germanic tribes like angls, saxons, normans (or norse or vikings), goths. During mongol-hun invasion many tribes displaced.

2nd: historical celts (or gauls) are totally a different race once lived in France, north italy, south germany. celts moved from there. todays celtic nations are considered to be ireland, scotland, wales, bretonia, and some parts of england. Todays' english are mainly of germanic roots (angls and saxons) but they also got combined with celts and romans.

3rd: todays French are a combined nation, mainly of germanic (frankish tribe) and latin (roman) root. They may also have some lesser bloodline coming from celts.

I seem to have missed this response by SilentHunter (quoting):

- 'french' franks surrendered to the Norman by selling them Normandy

Well, that's not a surrender - simply a negotiated peace.

- 'german' franks & wallons were beaten by 'french' franks at Bouvines (1214)

Again, not a surrender - simply a lost battle. And I must correct you: at Bouvines the French knights were beaten (for the 1st time ever) by a Flemish peasant army.

- 'french','german','english' & 'norman' franks surrendered during crusades

This is stretching the meaning of Franks to the limit, but you are correct - in the limited sense stated, as their respective nations did not surrender.

@camarilla: Let's not get into the race issue. There's no such thing as a German race - only a German nation. (Even the notion of a Germanic race goes way beyond the scientific facts.) Nor was there a Celtic race - there were however Celtic peoples and (using some imagination, as this is anachronistic) perhaps a Celtic nation. Most certainly there is a German and Celtic culture, however - which is quite a different thing.
