Civ4 Beyond the Sword Patch v3.17 is out

1. Now I am still playing the very first civilization 4 version. All I have to to is to download BTS, install it and it will be upgraded? It is some kind of adding new features to old civ4?

No, BTS is a pay-for expansion pack. You need to purchase it somewhere.

2. If I will download and install BTS 3.17 patch is it necessary to install all the older pathes as well? Or 3.17 will have all the features of older patches as well (like 3.13 in firaxis.com)

Yes, the 3.17 patch includes all previous BTS patches (3.03 and 3.13), but you still need to purchase the expansion pack itself to use the patch.

3. Where is it possible to download that 3.17 patch?

See the first post in this thread, and the post above yours recommended the second link.

ou, and one more question. Is BTS, Warlord and Gold is kind 3 choices I can make or they all have different features and you can update you civ4 with all of them? Am kinda new at this and I've never updated my games before. Thank you very much for getting me into this a bit :)

Warlords and Beyond the Sword are both separate expansion packs to Civ4. You can get BTS without getting Warlords (I believe so, anyway). Each one is a separate purchase, however.

Yes, I understand, that it is a purchase, but it is an upgrade for basic Civ4. Without it BTS expansion pack would be useless?

How come there is no possibility to downlaad 3.17 from firaxis.com?

Talking about warlords and gold and BTS, they combined together gives some great advantage? O it is kinda 3 three diferent games? Or is it the same old Civ 4, just with new civiliazations, units, misssions and etc, taken from all three expansion packs?

That is correct. Both Warlords and BTS add new gameplay features and rules plus content like new civilizations, leaders, units, buildings, and traits. You can read about the specific additions on Firaxis's site.

There is an auto-update feature to get the patches, but it has failed to completely download for a large number of people. They've let it download for hours or days with no luck. Thus, the recommendation is to download it normally via FTP/HTTP which is very reliable and then run it yourself. It's the same thing the game does, only it works more often. ;)

It is no different than buying all three products separately, except you save some :gold:.

How about you, do you have all expansion packs or you use only BTS with all the new patches realeased?

I have both Warlords and BTS because I bought Civ4 before they existed and got them as they were released. I run BTS 3.13 to ensure that changes I make to BUG maintain 3.13 compatibility since I think there are still a lot of users that haven't updated to 3.17.

There are many people that continue to play all 3 versions regularly, but I tend to find one and stick to it (creature of habit ;)).

Have a few more questions. Sorry :)

1. Is there a possibility to spy somehow, what technologies are discovered in other civilizations? Because during technology trading i don't know why, but not always I see, what they have. For example I get liberalism first, or find new religion, but when I want to trade these technologies AI seems to have them too.
2. What have I do that I could see how much turns is left for me untill the growth of a city and until the production is finished (those small digits while I am not in city view)

Thank's once again

In my case it's more a combination of not enough brains to hold more than 1 set of rules for a game this big (barely big enough to hold that one set, in fact) AND games take forever (a week or more) under the best of circumstances, why would I give a crap about that kind of variety when I have all these unplayed leaders, map scripts and options, interesting strategies, different starting conditions (late era, advanced, barbs, etc), and leader-civ combos to worry about first. I mean geez, all the permutations from any three of the above options will keep me busy for DECADES at one game a week.

I keep up with the latest patch/version just so my knowledge stays relevent. Knowing everything there is to know about 3.03 doesn't do me or anyone else any good when most people are on 3.17++.

You can use spies I think to attempt to steal technologies, plus you can check the tech trade window often. Otherwise, get a mod like BUG (shameless plug, see my sig) that gives you alerts when an AI is and is not willing to trade a tech. This is information you can get by opening the tech trade window each turn without having to do something so dreary.

Open the options screen (CTRL + O) and look for an option called "Detailed City Info" or something similar. This will place both of those numbers into the city bar beneath each of your cities on the map. You can also hold your mouse over a city bar to see even more information without having to open the city screen.

Emperor, any chance a new version for BuG will be released for the 3.17 patch? As is I havent been able to use it because the Notes Reminder tool doesn't seem to work since I've patched. Also, it blocks the % for fortification discount when hovering over spies.

Anyhow, what I hate about the actual official BtS patch, is the AI seems to behave totally unpredictable now. It seems they constantly get into the "too much on our hands" mode, and they stay that way to the end of the game. That USED to mean they were about to backstab someone, but looks like someone tampered around with the code in some way that wasn't mean to be?

We'll be doing a 3.1 release sometime in the next several weeks, but both of these issues have been addressed in our code repository. It's actually pretty easy to use our Subversion repo at SourceForge.net. See the "Download BUG Here" thread for quick instructions.

BTW, BUG 3.0 is fully 3.17 compatible, but it does have the issues noted above.

Grrr, next several weeks means probably months.

I re-downloaded the last version, but now I noticed a new glitch, for some reason I am not allowed to build aqueducts in any of my cities. I'll fool around with the map later after a break.

That's always the problem with making any projection, but do note that we nailed our previous 3.0 release target to the day. Besides, you can grab the latest version at any time. :)

I don't see how BUG could possibly cause this problem. Are you using BAT? Even if so, BAT only adds graphics. It is like BUG in that it doesn't change any game rules (no new units, civs, leaders, techs, etc). Do you have other mods installed?

That being said, if you do find that BUG is the culprit, please let me know so I can fix it.

About that aqueduct, it prob was just a Firaxis thing. I saved, loaded and suddenly it began to work again.

Though I did find out that BuG doesn't seem to really work in Team games. I played a map with a team of 2 members, but I can sort of see why. Behaviours are different in that case, and I guess someone has to code in the changes.

Can you please be more specific? The BUG 3.0 release has a bug when playing multiplayer (scoreboard doesn't display), but that was fixed shortly after release.

I make it a high priority to fix bugs in BUG, so if you find any, please post them in the BUG forum's Bug Reporting thread. Thanks!

Well, before I joined online play I was told by others that BuG doesn't work there. I didn't think that was a bug, just an unsupported feature. Maybe some of it does work, but right away you can see when playing with teams that stuff like the top bars for showing GG points, and great person points are stripped right out of the display, etc.

I haven't played online yet, so take this with a grain of salt. What I've been told is that you can play mods online, but both players must have the exact same version of the mod installed as a mod.

The entire CustomAssets directory is ignored. You probably have BUG installed in CustomAssets, so going online disables it.

I've been told that most people won't play with others that have a mod installed online because of a fear of cheating. I don't get this because civ does a comparison to make sure all players are running the exact same code, AFAIK.

From my understanding, it is impossible for a player to know if another is running a mod. However, if they are using a different patch this is detected, and most hosts will simply boot you from the game, because if they don't, you'll probably get out of turn order errors when everyone starts.

In the hope that this is not bringing me a piracy warning. I have the original (CIV Complete), and with the CD it works fine. Now, the thing is I hate to travel with CDs. India is no good to CDs or laptops to begin with. Is it possible to image (and/ or legal) to image the CD or to use a BTS image to avoid carrying the CD around? Will the game run in that case?

Google "Civilization 4 no cd" and you will find the awnser.

I play BTS on my laptop and main Pc but hate swapping the cd from the one to the other.
