Civilization is hitting the bottom!

Australia for one (as they too have other football codes), but let's get back to the topic shall we?

Yes, the highly discussable topic of "Civ 5 hitting the bottom" because it has dropped to #5 on the Steam game play stats.

The thread should probably stick to talking football.

The real question is why do so many people play Football Manager?
It's not even about Football.

It's a Soccer game.

Oh man, you're walking on the thin ice here :) Do you really want to start such discussion on forum where we should be concentrating on civ?

And for your knowledge.

95% of the world thinks that Football is about playing ball with the Foot. Only 5% think that Football is playing ball with hands :D and yet this 5% tend to think that 95% is wrong?

Oh God, help me, please :P Could anyone be more self-centered? :P

Edited.

And I love the Handegg :D Brilliant :D

Look up the origin of the word football. It comes from the fact that the game was played on foot as opposed to horseback. The original football basically involved a whole bunch of people running at each other trying to get a ball (or inflated pig's bladder) from one end to the other. Since this game had medieval origins, it was pretty much no holds barred, violent game. The origins of the game can be seen in Rugby, which is still technically called Rugby Football.

In the 19th century, they wanted to make the game less violent. One method was to set limits on how you could be violent and created the more formalized structure of Rugby. The other option was to limit or remove tackling and have you kick or throw the ball into a net. Eventually, they removed the throwing part of the game entirely (although surprisingly late). This became Association rules Football. American football is an offshoot of Rugby football. It's closer to the original game, but it also has focused on extensive structure to remove the chaos of the original game.

I hope the mods will forgive this digression of the topic. I think the history of sports is a fascinating one. It'll also hopefully help dispel the myth that football is called football because it involves kicking. Logically, it would be called "kickball" if that were the case (the Italians are the closest here with the name Calcio). It's called football because it's played on foot. You can see some elements that have stayed the same with both games. It's kinda like comparing English and German. Both are Germanic languages, but they diverged long enough ago that there is only superficial similarities. Same with Association football, Rugby football, and American football. A handful of rules still apply to all (the length of field and roughly the amount of players are the two biggest ones).

LOL. Makes you wonder doesnt it?

I can imagine a couple of english lads trying to teach some americans football back in the days : "No no no! Its only the goalkeeper who can carry the ball!"

BTT : "Lies, damned lies, and statistics" describes this one best I guess. The fact that most games doesnt need Steam online and that playing offline removes you from the numbers makes it impossible to state anything with these numbers. It would be nice with sales figures, but I read somewhere that Steam doesnt publish those (I wonder why?)
For me the worst case scenario would be that noone bought or played civ 5 and resulting in the death of the series. The second worst scenario would be that civ 6 would be civ 5.5.

When I first saw this thread, I misread the title as "Civilization is hitting my bottom!" :spank:

The first few pages were therefore less interesting than I expected. The Football thing was interesting though :goodjob:

The guy on the left looks like a massive panzy, while the one on the right looks like a badass about to do harm to someone's physical being.

I'll take handegg any day :P

On topic: Pointless, really. Doom n gloomers grasping for whatever straws they can find.

I link my non-steam games with steam so that my friends can see what/if I'm playing anything.

And i gotta say, the few times I've actually tried watching soccer it just seems like the guys running and kicking the ball want to tackle someone and use their hands SO BAD. Completely agree with the pansy statement, i like to watch huge athletes wreck each other. :D

I was making a joke that I had no idea would last 2 pages.
I enjoy Soccer when I can watch it.
I'm from Soccer City, USA (Portland Oregon) (Atleast that's what I've heard it called)
What I find interesting is that this is more for the American-centric thread that was started about the George Bush saying on techs a few days ago.

On topic, I only play off-line because I don't have internet access at work, so those numbers aren't accurate.

I'm not a huge soccer fan either, but I have to say that it isn't fair to dismiss a sport when you don't understand the intricacies of it. If you want to give soccer a chance, you have to understand the formations both teams are running, the different strategies involving stamina and replacements, et cetera.

I say this because I'm a huge, huge, huge baseball fan, and I have people constantly tell me "Baseball is boring, they're not doing anything, look at them just standing there. The pitcher just throws the ball and the batter swings at it." And I feel that's unfair, as there is actually a lot of intricacy in the game, in where players stand, in what players are even on the field.

And the two seconds between the pitcher's wind-up and the ball crossing the plate is possibly the most exact and intricate combination of mental and physical finesse and strength in any professional sport, and is an incredibly intimate and complex struggle between the pitcher and the hitter, where even minor quirks in temperament can become deciding factors.

Sorry to gush about that, it's just something I enjoy a lot!

Technically, it's Association Football. Soccer is short for Association (an abbreviation I doubt Americans would ever come up with, honestly, so I think it's something the British came up with and forgot about).
Yes we came up with but didn't entirely forget it.
Actually Football is the word the entire world uses for soccer. It's only known as soccer in the US.
Not strictly true. All British kids would know what you were talking about if you said "soccer", despite everyone's preference for the word "football" (if only for the occasional schoolmaster who insists on the concise "soccer strip" instead of football kit).

But yeah it's odd to be surrounded now by people who think football only has peripheral associations with feet (puns intended). And don't get me started on "World" Series...

{Storm is a British expat.}

I also think us yanks should go metric. (just to throw this thread really OT)

Numbers does not say if a player actually really enjoys a game or not...

I have seen some comments of players saying "I played 100 hours... and it is boring". Even a comment on amazon.com says "after playing 180 hours, I rate civ 5 1 star...)
Ooops. How is it possible? I recall having played Oblivion 140 hours, and it was loooooong!

I do not like Civ5, but I need to be fair.
There are a lot of players, and many of them play many many hours before saying "it is boring..."
Well... perhaps the players recorded on Steam are all bored, but at least, they play !!!

Well, the World Series does include a couple of teams in Canada, but yeah. Although, it does gain some validity in that even Japanese players, being from a very nationalistic nation, will say that the MLB's world series is the stage with the highest level of play in baseball.

At least now we have the World Baseball Classic, which is fun to watch for me, at least.
