Civilization V Announced!

Why type in blue?

Your ideas are intriguing, berni, but complicated. I don't understand the iron mine idea.
I have always though a physical supply line would be a little micromanaging-y, unless it was invisible and the only way to block off an enemy unit would be to surround it with one's own units.

Well I really think that it was always very unrealistic that supply lines, one of the most important military aspects in real life, were left out. And ambushes / other types of combat.

If no one has mentioned this, there are two civs for sure: America and Germany, and 90% chance of Arabia. How do I know this? Look at the bottom of the information section of this website (The official Civ V site), any one will see a button-looking thing that looks like an arabian camel archer.

Blue tiping letters...hmm i guess this was the way i started with local forums but no problem i will do it in black..
Regarding my suggestions, i probably should read before i post the Civ ideas&suggestions forum as similar theme and suggestions are already discused there.
With mines i ment when they are built, they will start with producing number ( 1-10) like some kind of effective layout, so example if there is a mine 4 ( number will be randomly established), it means 4 shields/out of max. possile 10. With new technology invented the number could be higher/or lower with accidents, spy sabotage, natural disaster, or even deployed (like random events stile). So when the iron ore is viable we must create some kind of producing chain which leads to the final product like mines produces for example iron - mine is roaded to ironworks, which we must made to produce steal, in case of military oriented society this is transormed to arms, weapon like swords/shields. In Civ 4 iron ore appear and swords are doable. The whole sistem would be like the mix of settlers, simcity and colonize games - not like micromanaging but try to combine all of the potential options to offer the creator to invent the most plain and effective sistem to use. Off course this is only basic sistem - could also re-think about production-city builder way of game optionally for the people who likes to build, produce and develop the cities, on the other hand this could be tipped off in the beggining of the game and given to AI - like governor option in Civ 4.This leads to main question how we would like play this game - like peace builder or warmonger. Ideally would be on both way with the same depth, but in reality this is hardly managed, so each way we take we like to have plenty of option and diversity of choices. This of course is simply my vision of maybe someday created civ based game, perhaps in future Civ 6 or 7, we will see...

First awesome can't believe it has already been four years since Civ IV boy that's already really long. Anyway for Civ V I really hope they enable a few features I always missed in Civ so far.

Let people build cities on water for example including aqua-farming and stuff in the future area. An extended modern and future area I am a bit tired to always play through the classic and middle age area which takes a huge proposion of the game and then have a really short modern area and future area (with tech maybe take some from Civ IV Total War MOD or a bit from Alpha Centauri). Btw. why hasn't there been a modern version of Alpha Centraui yet? But back to the topic change the space race that you first have to find a suitable location instead of sending your space ship to somewhere unknown (pretty illogic).

Well my biggest wish always was to extend the map when you reach space age at least to include the moon. I know that will never be done but someone can dream :)

Now I'm going to need some tips from people who have managed college + civ (with success, of course).

I did a B.Sc. and M.Sc. Eng playing CIVII, CIVIII and CIVIV. (Yes it took more than 5 years )

I have three suggestions.

1) Play all weekend from Friday through Sunday (except if there is a Party )

2) When you have a craving during the rest of the week, set a timer for 1 hour and when it rings play the turn to end then exit and do you studies. Then if you hit a wall in the studies, play 1 hour more.

3) Bring a Notepad (the paper kind) just for CIV notes, if you have any ideas during the lectures.

Then you should manage

Firaxis actually doesn't own the rights of any of the games Sid made before Firaxis. We are lucky that Firaxis has the rights to most of them via 2K games, but Alpha Centauri's rights are held by EA.

They could just name it something else. Alpha Centauri is a cluster of 3 stars, so why not just take the closest star to the sun, which is Proxima Centauri (a part of the cluster). While it wouldnt be the direct successor of Alpha Centauri, I think it could work very well as its spiritual successor.

My machine runs Civ IV perfectly (Win7).
Sure it'a not something with your driver or installation?

I don't see how it could be the installation. I've installed the game three times. What happens is that when I start the game and come to the game menu, I get the message "You have selected an unusable voice capture device. Voice capture deisabled". I have to click on that message three times to get rid of it. After that, if playing the game, sooner or later the game freezes and I hear the modt horrible noise instead of the music. If I play BtS, I am also imformed that "Your game is below the required colour standards. Basic colour function chosen, but you may still experience playign difficulties." BtS also freezes sooner or later.

My sound devices and colour are not below standard. I have sent a report to Microsoft.

I have no doubt that Civ5 will be fully Windows for Games compatable, the problem with Civ4 is they tried to do that, but Civ4 was produced before Vista was released so the devs were working with a pre-vista GFW spec. But they have already stated that Civ5 is build for DirectX 11, so that alone makes me believe that they are well on their way to a goal of full GFW compliance this time.

CS

Thank you! That is comforting to hear. :)

I'm sure if they did a remake of Alpha Centauri and simply called it something else some lawyer working for EA would notice.

Theres a ton of games that are similar in gameplay, art and story. EA owns the right to the name, not the the entire genre of TBS based games set in space.

Its like DC comics owns the rights to Superman, but not the concept of superheroes.

Have you tried not using voice capture?

No idea about the color stuff, but try updating your video drivers. They're probably out of date (if you're using what came with your system, they're definatly out of date).

BtS freezing would not be suprising if your hardware is below average, which I suspect it might be. One should always aim to get a system that is slightly better than average unless they only use the computer for email and word processing. Not only does it prevent stuff like this, it allows your system to be a little future-proof so you can still run current applications up to four years from when you get it.

I don't know what voice capture is.

I bought this computer (a new Fujitsu) a month ago, so I'd be very surprised if my hardware is below average.

Processor: Intel(R)Core(TM) 2 Quad CPU Q8300
@2.50 GHz 2.50 GHz

64 bit operative system

Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce GT220, recently updated

Drive routine version for graphic card: 8.17.11.9261

A new computer is not always suitable for gaming. Theres cheap hardware and expensive hardware, and most novices buy overpriced "pretty" computers with lowend performance hardware.

It's success or failure will be defined by how moddable it is. If you give us less tools than we have for Civ4, I won't play it.

That's a good point. I think Civ4 >>> Civ3 in that regard, but I wonder if the sales prove it. And Civ3 is easier to mod for new comers, just very limited in modding potential.

I think AI and feature creep is what will kill/make a turn-based, single player.

Yes there will be the usual gigs and hiccups to civ 5.0-- but what I care about is Sid's committment to continue with the game but the concept of "turned based". For us +55 guys who wants to be in the stress of rapid fire real time. Me I like a nice glass of wine and the ability to ponder the options--ON MY TIME. OMT for short. Long live turn based high IQ games. Maqabee and out.

You might also want to hit the enter key after some of the sentences like other people do- it seperates it into smaller bits of text and makes it look less like a large block of boring text, which people won't spend as much time reading.

A certain moderator in particular hates long posts.

Who's that guy on the right part of the picture?

Firaxis is announcing Civ 5 will have 'unprecedented modding tools' and 'unlimited options for modifying Civ V any way they like' so I hope they'll do as well as civ IV. Although the word "tools" worries me. I used vi for most of my work to create my mods, and it worked well. A map/world editor is useful too for creating scenarios, but what matters is not tools, but raw power. Give us python, xml, or lua, C++ and whatnot if you like, but give us coding power Firaxis. Please.
