Civilization VI for Mac "Coming Soon" - Aspyr

My Mid 2012 MBP (15") should work, at least on low settings. I hope it'll manage better than that.

Maybe. These are minimum requirements though, not recommended ones.

Hmm actually, while all iMacs since 2013 have good enough graphics, I'm not sure they all have quad core i5 processors. Will have to investigate further. Needs to check Mac Pro and Mac Mini too.

Edit: updated first post with more accurate info:
  • iMac: some 2012 models, most 2013 -2014 models, all since
  • Mac Mini: No

Great News! Now let's wait for the new MBP to be released in the next weeks so we can play above minimum specs. I really hope they will enable the 13" to have a dedicated graphic card, I'm definitely not going to buy something larger.

For those wondering if their Mac meets these requirements, here's a rundown:
  • iMac: some 2012 models, everything since should be fine
Strangely my mid 2011 iMac seems to fulfill all the requirements that were mentioned. Am I missing something?

Ah, looks like there is one iMac from 2011 that meets requirements. I'll update the first post.

Yay, my upgrade from a 2007 iMac last year to a new monster (iMac Retina 5K 27" Late 2015 3.2 GHz M390 MK472D/A) was worth it after all :-)

Will this be able to run it?

iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512 MB

I must admit I am slightly disappointed to learn that Firaxis did not go the Paradox route and use Steam's libraries to ease the porting of their games to macOS and Linux (particularly considering that Civilization VI is distributed exclusively through Steam and relies on Steam). Considering that Firaxis wrote a new engine for this game, that would have been something worth investigating early on rather than ploughing on.

Secondly, this answer from the FAQ worries me:
Release date info for the Linux version is still in the works so subscribe to this post to be notified of further announcements.
[...]
Q: Is Civ VI available on Linux?

A:
Linux is still being investigated as a project. We hope to have clarity in coming months on if a viable version of Civ VI can make it to Linux and will let you know as soon as we have more information.

This language seems to suggest that a Linux port is not confirmed, even though a Linux port was announced back in May. Is 2K Games/Firaxis/Aspyr walking back that announcement?

RAM, VRAM, and Video Card are all below the minimum.

Disappointing for sure, but not surprising.

Sounds like the announcement in May was somewhat premature.

Oh definitely not surprising. Firaxis is not that sort of cutting edge after all.

Sounds like the announcement in May was somewhat premature.

But quite frankly, if one has ported a game to macOS, then a further port to Linux should almost be trivial. Hell, OpenGL support is even better on Linux than on macOS, particularly due to Valve's recent influence and their SteamOS. So it frankly sounds like whether they can convince the spreadsheet white shirts that a Linux port is worth it.

Yep. My guess is because the minimum specifications ended up so high, they're not sure if it will be commercially viable. As you say, porting to Linux from Mac shouldn't be difficult, but keeping it updated and providing support over its lifecycle is costly.

I have a mid-2015 MacBook Pro Retina. That should be able to run the game well, right? Also, I noticed the minimum specs are for "quick viewing." What is quick viewing?

All these posts yet no one mentions the good ole Mac Pro LOL. How about a 2.8ghz quad 5,1 Mac Pro from 2010?

Well, since these are minimum reqs: Which of the currently available Imacs will be able to run the game on highest settings smoothly? Any idea? Thanks guys!!!

I guess I won't be playing civ 6 anytime soon. At least this saves me from buying the game before I realized I couldn't run it...

Yeah, something tells me Mac sales will be very low.

My Mid 2011 iMac also meets all the requirements.

iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011)
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB

Very happy! Now, I just hope we get it the same day, otherwise, I'll play it using VMWare and Windows.

Depends how minimum these minimum requirements are, but yes if it's a 15", no if it's a 13".

I didn't list it because I have no idea how Mac Pros compare to the minimum specs. Probably needs a more modern graphics card, but I'd expect everything else to be good enough.

Won't know for sure till its out or Aspyr release some 'recommended' requirements. Would need to have a decent AMD or Nvidia video card for sure.

Yeah, now even if I get a machine in the next few months that can run it, I ain't buyin' it 'till a Steam winter sale, because they're gonna be withholding the Aztecs.

When you buy the top-of-the-line Mac like the Mac Pro, it's going to run everything for years. My 2008 Mac Pro still runs everything great. (It's not going to run Sierra like your will, but it does El Capitan just fine.) In fact, in the media creation business, Mac Pros from 2010-2012 are much more popular than the 2013 Mac Pros at this point.

Your Mac's processor (Xeon W3530) is on the list of high end CPUs here: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html so I think you might be able to run it -- but go to the Aspyr blog and ask them there-- they can give you a definitive answer.
