[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

Actually Korean ㅓ which is Anglicized as EO is pronounced /ʌ/, which is the sound of U in the American pronunciation of SUN or RUN. So Goryeo is pronounced /koɾjʌ/, whence "Korea." As to why that particular Anglicization was chosen, I suspect it was based on the Anglicization of /ɯ/ as EU since /ʌ/ is to /o/ as /ɯ/ is to /u/.

that makes sense because english doesn’t make consistent distinctions regarding vowels and their sounds, so the way we think it sounds as english speakers is different than the korean pronunciation but the sounds aren’t well distinguished in English. Good one to know though, now that I actually know how to pronounce it correctly lmao

"Kill it with nuclear fire. :p I seriously hate that poem with a passion. :p"

Good doctor, would you prefer to read another of Shoggoth's enigma tale mysteries in your tour of odious literature or does summoning nuclear Gandhi to punish Coleridge's crimes suffice?

I confess that if they weren't state propaganda the repetitive epic would probably appeal to me. ;)

I am glad you admit it. Perhaps now we can push Occitan, Kushan, and Norman pretenders aside? Let us concentrate on the true next civ reveal--Cardassia led by Chief Archon Makbar, using Catherine's animations, and waving a bottle of kanar while she smugly denounces civilizations with more spies than her and uses her unique ability to kidnap, convict, and execute other players' units to increase loyalty. The Cardassian market is big, they'll never allow Dukat as a leader because he's too controversial; it is the same with Enabran Tain. Tekeny Ghemor and Damar just don't have big enough personalities. Broca? We know nothing about him. Iliana Ghemor? She'd be the new Joan d'Arc and it'd be developers burned at the stake. Elim Garak, a simple tailor? You might as well have Andrew Johnson lead America! No, Makbar is the perfect choice for a leader from a marketing perspective, she represents the popular idea of Cardassian culture and she's a girl.

The issue stems from trying to rationalise it as an "Anglicanisation". It's a romanisation, made by Koreans and is a fairly recent one at that (2000). It also makes a number of changes similar to Pinyin (b/p instead of p/p'... Běijīng instead of Pěijīng, Pyeongyang instaed of P'yŏngyang) which should drive home that English, while obviously important to them, wasn't the orthography chosen to base it on. The reason for 'eu' and 'eo' is our good old queen ***** ASCII. AoE1 ('97) uses the old romanisation and as a proper computer game, it also commits the same cardinal sin that led them to do this switch. You can play as Choson in the game, not Chosŏn/Joseon. In turn the linked text states that while most would prefer to have them be 'o' and 'u' respectively and the change was controversial, ASCII limitations led them to use diphthongs and 'e' was chosen because it was a front vowel.

Speaking of... AoE1 has the benefit of being made back when ASCII ruled the land, but Civ 6 somehow doesn't believe in the existence of diacritics (in certain languages and/or under circumstances chosen by a crystal ball) despite being made with full UTF-8 support. What's that about? :mischief:

One a different note- is there an expectation that more details about September content will be revealed when the August 27th patch releases?
I doubt there will be anything in the patch notes, and I would be surprised to get anything direct in today's livestream. But we should keep a close eye out for hints in people's backgrounds on the livestream.

We could get hints to actual civs, or, if the two represent a region (like the first pack came from the Americas), for the region.

I think Europe is the most likely to get a pair of civs? Or middle east? Byzantium could be part of either. Portugal, Italy (or Italian city state), Assyria, Babylon - any other highly likely possibilities we should look out for? Of course, they like to give us surprises, too. Especially if they're keeping some popular ones back for a second season pass.

I would be happy to do so. Thank you.

What would your LUA be? Increased loyalty in occupied cities, but decreased loyalty in cities you founded, when purchasing tiles, get an extra tile free?

Andrew Johnson LUA:
Veto - Always serves as the tiebreaker in any World Congress. Spies can steal diplomatic influence. Half diplomatic points from city states.

Oh I didn't mean as the disastrous impeached president, I meant as the writer, myself.

I know, but I decided to play it straight due to the unusual coincidence of your name.

Venice was spotted in today's livestream as a city-state, possibly as a replacement for Lisbon or Antioch.

Meanwhile, in the same stream, Babylon is still a city-state.

Well, there goes united Italy or the return of Venice. Could still get a different Italian city-state--Genoa, Florence, etc.--but IMO Venice was always the most likely. We're probably not getting any variety of Medieval/Early Modern Italian civ and definitely not a united Italy.

*laughs in Assyrian*

Laughs in Medieval Greek.

I think Venice will replace Antioch, since Venice fits more into the bonus of this city than Lisbon.

If considering Lisbon's original suzerain bonus is naval-based, Venice - another famous maritime city - as a replacement of Lisbon is likely.

Although we also know that suzerain bonuses are not necessarily connect with the city-state's real-life counterpart (for instance I don't think people of Brussels are famous for their wonder-building skills).

this would seem to a) implicate no Italy/Venice civ and b) at least one of Zanzibar, Muscat, Lisbon and Antioch, all 4 mercantile cities tied to popular civ requests, is being promoted to civ status. I’m personally hoping this implies a middle east pack with Muscat being promoted to Oman civ w/ either Hittites or Assyria. More likely though, is what you stated: that this next pack will be European, with Portugal, Byzantium, or both.

Of course, it’s possible that Venice is the new mercantile city state just being added on too though. But your observation probably deconfirms Italy/Venice in NFP and Babylon in the upcoming DLC at minimum
