[NFP] Civilization VI: Possible New Civilizations Thread

Simple, he is not Dutch and is and has never been never considered a great "Dutch" leader of the Netherlands.
Doing so would insult me greatly to be honest and I doubt Firaxis would do that. Ruling over a region as part of your empire doesn't make you a good choice as a leader for that civilization.
Willem even though born in Nassau, Germany was the face and leader of the dutch revolt against the Spanish.

It's like having Philip II for the Philippines. It not only makes no sense, as a Filipino it's almost insulting.

Given that the Romans and the Holy Roman Empire (which controlled parts of Italy at one time) are already in the game, I doubt we will be getting Italy as a civ, unless its in the form of an alternate leader for Rome.

For a European Civ or alternate leader, my first choice would be Finland lead by Jean Sibelius or Mannerheim, but the Kingdom of Bohemia, Charles Martel and the Franks, Rollo of Normandy, the Hannseatic league, Teutonic Order or even Prussia would be viable options as well. Martin Luther would also make a good alternate leader for Germany.
Well Italy is probably the most requested new European Civ, and the next biggest gaming market not explored, so I think it's fair enough that they can get a chance. Nothing about Germany or Rome screams Renaissance Italy anyway. If anything, the Hanseatic league, Teutonic Order, and Prussia are definitely more German.

For a North American civ, my first choice would be the Huron, but based on what we know already, it seems the Maya will get that slot. Perhaps we could get Charles Lindbergh or Robert A. Taft. as an alternate leader for America?
Old Teddy from now on will basically be Taft. :mischief:
Since they're basing it off of geographical regions I think the Maya and Gran Colombia are closer than the Maya and any other Native American tribe. At least that's what I'm hoping.

I am completely ecstatic.

I am seeing negative opinions about some content so I want to chime in with my take.

I am in full support of these modes that allow the devs to go beyond pure history.

Give me cataclysmic meteors and soothsayers and the fountain of youth and Bermuda Triangle! These things are new and will keep the game fresh and for those of you who don't like them you can turn them off.

Simply put this is awesome. Wonderful, wonderful job Firaxis. I can't believe wait for next week.

Those new civs will keep you busy with Civilizations Expanded, too.

I am in full agreement. Can't wait to shake up the game a bit.

They always choose civs in the exact same way for each expansion and even though this is technically dlc they have the expansion feel of it 8 new civs + 1 extra leader for an existing civ (of R&F specific this time).

Both in R&F and GS we had:
2 civs for the Americas, specific 1 for North (Cree, Canada) and 1 for South (Mapuche, Inca), so I guess we already have those two with Maya and Gran Colombia. One North and one South.
I don't think we get another Native North American civ next to the Maya otherwise they would have paired those together.
1 African civ (Zulu and Mali) and this time Ethiopia.
2 European civs (Netherlands/Scotland and Sweden/Hungary). This time I think Portugal (99% sure about that one) and another new civ like Italy, Ireland, Bohemia or Romania.
1 Bordering Europa/Asia civ (Georgia and Ottomans). This has to be the spot that Byzantium fills perfectly.
2 Asia/Oceania civs (Mongolia/Korea and Phoenicia/Maori). My guess Babylon (could have been Assyria but not before Babylon itself I think) and a new civ like Vietnam (with a smaller chance for the Philippines or Burma)
And next to that there were 3 Female leaders in the packs (Tamar/Seonduk/Wilhelmina and Kristina/Dido/Eleanor) and 4 new civs new to the series even if in some cases only in name (Cree/Mapuche/Georgia/Scotland and Hungary/Maori/Phoenicia/Canada). Though I have a feeling some replaced other civs from the earlier games (Maori/Polynesians, Phoenicia/Carthage and maybe even Scotland/Celts, Hungary/Austria and Cree/Iroquois) so 4 new civs is not that sure and I keep it at 3 for this round of civs.
Biggest candidates for the female leaders are Maya, Byzantium, Vietnam and with a smaller possibility maybe Ethiopia or the second European civ? (I doubt they bring Maria back for Portugal, as it was a very unpopular choice).

So to sum it up I think the last 5 civs are Portugal, Byzantium and Babylon for sure and I expect Vietnam and Italy or Ireland (this one I find the hardest to choose between).
I like how you think - not least because it leaves the possibility of Italy more open than I had done!

I’m intrigued by the new Persona packs. It will give the Civ team an opportunity to rebrand existing civs and leaders. I think teddy and Catherine are good choices but Phillip of Spain sorely needs rebranding.

It's sort of way to add 'alt leaders' in terms of mechanics without having to create an entire new model, get a new voice actor, etc.

Wait, am I missing something, or is the Frontier Pass not actually available for purchase yet on steam?

Not until the 21st I think.

On the other hand, I'm super irrationally bothered by the Persona packs. I could tolerate Eleanor since she was technically two civilizations, but I really don't like the idea of bloating the leader list with existing leaders in different outfits. As petty as it is, I would honestly rather they just be lazy alternate costumes you could select from an additional dropdown box than dedicated "leader options" that could have different gameplay (if the thing about luxuries stands). As it stands, I almost want to actively avoid the pass just to pretend that they aren't there, and I'll definitely avoid doing so until I can at least see how the game handles them.

I get that it's less work than making an entirely new model, but it's also more work than just... not including them at all, which I'd prefer to a "bonus" that looks super lazy/cheap. If they're chosen independently from the leader list, I can probably tolerate them, but if they populate the normal one I'm not interested until/unless there's a mod to straight up convert them into different people.

I'm on the fence with this. I think updated Teddy will be interesting.
On the other hand I don't know I feel about updated Catherine. When they mentioned turning luxuries into culture and tourism all I could think about is how that would have fit Louis XIV perfectly.

Now that I'm thinking about this, so the agendas are changing but not the leader ability correct? So she will still have her ladies in waiting and spy bonuses I presume, but her agenda will be now be luxury/culture related?

What do we think about likely balance Changes?
  • Policy cards that boost pop yield, specalist, large cities in general?
  • Buffs to underpowered districts, buildings like entertainment complex, arena and aztec unique building?
  • Changes to military, like industrial era melee and anti tank units?
More ideas?

I'll wager some of these leaders will have different bonuses depending on whether or not you own Gathering Storm.

It's a bit more work for them, but that's how some leaders already function anyway.

Otherwise you'll end up with 9 leaders who do not interact with the mechanics introduced in the two expansions. That sounds restrictive.

With all the focus on the new stuff it's easy too forget how much balance patches can change the game.

If they are as indepth as the post GS patches then nothing is off the table.

They might even give religion beliefs a look over like they did with pantheons.

No, it's agenda and abilities. It seems to be essentially a cheaper alternative to provide alt leaders. I think it's a great idea.

I'll get it, but I'm pretty ambivalent about that aspect unless Teddy and Cathy's new LUAs are what I've always wanted for America and France.

Seems to me Rough Rider Teddy should get the current Roosevelt's leader ability (Roosevelt Corollary, +5 combat strength on your continent, +1 appeal to natural park tiles, and access to the actual rough rider unit) and that the current Roosevelt should get something new.

I'm guessing he will keep the Rough Rider, but get some kind of bonuses for forceful Diplomacy.
