Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

thanks . ı have only CivIII , Civ Assist and an Irfanview to see related Civ files installed , in addition to Adobe Pdf and Epub readers . How does one find those plug-ins ?

What browser do you use? In chrome it is Menu / Tools / Extensions.

You may want to check some of the links here for any programs that run at startup.

thanks for the link . Even if it looks scary to any computer illiterate like me , ı could look up for stuff . Using whatever Microsoft got bundled into the lap top as ı bought it back in November , it's this "e" letter .

I wouldn't use Adobe's pdf reader unless I had a specific reason - it's rather heavy, and the updating software Adobe would like you to run at all times can be a hassle.

Also, typically it's more the vendor's fault than Microsoft's... most computers that come with Windows preinstalled come with (even more :) ) questionable stuff.

can't actually rail much against Microsoft . As said illiterate of sorts ,just went into the shops and looked for the "best" within budget , one single consideration it had to look like capable of playing Civ III .

Civ III isn't at all demanding by today's standards, there are phones which exceed min specs to play it.

It stores them in plaintext, so anybody who gets access to your machine even for just a few moments can get access to your passwords. That's a pretty serious security problem.

In Opera 12.17 and earlier, you can set a master password for the built-in password manager, so that the passwords are encrypted and you can't access it except with that password. You can get there via Tools --> Preferences --> Advanced --> Security --> Set Master Password. By default, it isn't on, and the passwords are encrypted with a default password (which isn't a whole lot better than the plain text used elsewhere).

I don't know if any other browsers (including Opera 15+) have such an option. But I would consider storing the passwords non-encrypted to be a serious security problem, as most people probably assuming that the "remember password" option is safe. I personally use KeePass instead of a built-in password tool, though, even on Opera 12, since KeePass is easy to use with any browser.

True, ideally someone will never get ahold of your computer. But I wouldn't start storing passwords and bank account numbers in a Notepad file just because I can lock my Windows session. That's like asking for Murphy's Law to strike and have someone swipe your laptop the one time you forget to lock it.

considering ı haven't played the later games and some notable partizans of III assure me that ı have no need for playing them , ı would say that's a good thing .

ı think ı found the plug-ins . Two for the anti-virus programme already closed for ı don't have connection at home ; also closed the one for Adobe .

Nah, from a security standpoint I really see personal passwords and bank details in a notepad file as fine. Doing that and not locking your computer is pretty much equivalent to leaving your email logged in and accessible when you're not at your computer.

I just use keepass because it has convenience features (auto-generation, browser integration, etc.) The real benefit of having an encrypted keepass file is that I can store it in the cloud.

You have no need, certainly, but I think you're missing out if you don't play Civ IV at least a couple of times.

Civ IV is commonly heralded as the best in the series, so I'd agree with that. The third installment is pretty great too, though.

Firefox keeps hassling me with this pop up every single time I download from a particular site.

How do I get it to stop pestering me with this and just show me the download save as dialog?

and my nephew actually has Civ V and says he likes it ; there is hope for him afterall . Was afraid he would get stuck in first person shooters forever .

Civ IV is by far the best designed of the lot.

Civ III and earlier lacked effective safeguards against degenerate playstyles, once you figured out the mechanics you had to hold back for things to remain interesting.
Civ V was made in ignorance of what its mechanics meant, the broken mess was patched up admirably but it still shows. Also, gameplay is fiddly (more clicks per actual decision) and highlights AI weaknesses.

My Android device has completely stopped opening web links from mobile apps such as facebook & twitter. All I ever get is a blank page. I'll hit reload and even go back to the app ad try again, but it still refuses to load the page. What's worse, is that it will frequently load the page and it will appear, and then go completely blank again anyway once it finishes loading.

How do I fix this?

No idea, but I'd try a cache cleaner. I was having an insufficient memory problem that prevented me from updating certain apps.

I installed SystemCleanup and that solved it.

You might also try going to Settings - Apps - Running and force stopping the browser and anything else that might be using wireless data.

Of course, you can always Uninstall, reboot, reinstall.

I'm not sure if the cache is the issue, because I set my firefox to not store cache, a setting that extended to the version on my mobile when I synced it with my pc. Deleting the cache from fb or twitter didn't help either.

EDIT: I just noticed; my Do Not Track browser addon has been forcibly disabled by yahoo when I visit the yahoo site. Is this a bad thing?

I'd let the developer know.

My question:
I'm resurrecting my wife's 2007 macbook. Before the hard drive crashed I had maxed out the RAM. Now I'd like to put a SSD in it.

I *think* I'm limited to a 2.5" x 7mm SATA drive. Anyone know if that's correct?

A website can't forcibly disable an addon. I'd recommend not using the do not track browser addon. If on Firefox my recommendation is to use Cookie Controller, and whitelist sites that you actually needs cookies from.

2007 Macbook takes drives up to 9.5mm thick: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Hard+Drive+Replacement/514

Since you're attaching the drive to the bracket you can safely use thinner than 9.5mm without risk of it bouncing around. (Which is handy, since nearly any msata SSD available now is 7mm.)

Thanks. So if I'm not mistaken, the key things to use when restricting my searches the the 2.5" and 9.5mm? Like, the SATA standard doesn't matter?

I was reading up some more and it seems I can use a SATA III since the standard requires backwards compatibility?
http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8142/~/difference-between-sata-i,-sata-ii-and-sata-iii
" SATA II specifications provide backward compatibility to function on SATA Iports. SATA III specifications provide backward compatibility to function on SATA I and SATA II ports. However, the maximum speed of the drive will be slower due to the lower speed limitations of the port.

Example: SanDisk Extreme SSD, whichsupports SATA 6Gb/s interface and when connected to SATA 6Gb/s port, can reach up to 550/520MB/s sequential read and sequential write speed rates respectively. However, when the drive is connected to SATA 3 Gb/s port, it can reach up to 285/275MB/s sequential read and sequential write speed rates respectively."

What about a hybrid drive? I'm not expecting to needs vast reserves of space, and I understand that the data bandwidth will be limited by the motherboard (cache bus speed, right?) so I don't want to overdo it.

As long as I have 500Gb - 1Tb I'll be fine. I can always use an external or network if that's not enough.

Edit: here's a hybrid I'm consider
