Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread II

LastPass is great. Syncs across all your devices, it's also web-based, so I can get access any site from anyone's device.

Incorporates a password generator that allows you to specify length, character types, rememberability, pronouncable, exclude character types, etc.

And it can record new website accounts on the fly. It's well worth the $12/year for mobile. Desktop is free from what I recall.

Photobucket keeps demanding that I connect the account with my mobile, yet I've already got the app and uploaded pictures, so why does it refuse to recognize the linked accounts? I've already got it to recognize my FB and desktop thingamajigs. How do I force it to recognize the connection to my mobile?

Not really, I'd classify Chrome/Firefox/IE/Opera built-in password managers as feature-deficient, but I'm not aware of any particular security problems.

It stores them in plaintext, so anybody who gets access to your machine even for just a few moments can get access to your passwords. That's a pretty serious security problem.

That's not a problem, it's by design to avoid people from having a false sense of security. If you're not at your computer, it should be locked.

From Chrome browser security lead:

I'm the Chrome browser security tech lead, so it might help if I explain our reasoning here. The only strong permission boundary for your password storage is the OS user account. So, Chrome uses whatever encrypted storage the system provides to keep your passwords safe for a locked account. Beyond that, however, we've found that boundaries within the OS user account just aren't reliable, and are mostly just theater.

Consider the case of someone malicious getting access to your account. Said bad guy can dump all your session cookies, grab your history, install malicious extension to intercept all your browsing activity, or install OS user account level monitoring software. My point is that once the bad guy got access to your account the game was lost, because there are just too many vectors for him to get what he wants.

We've also been repeatedly asked why we don't just support a master password or something similar, even if we don't believe it works. We've debated it over and over again, but the conclusion we always come to is that we don't want to provide users with a false sense of security, and encourage risky behavior. We want to be very clear that when you grant someone access to your OS user account, that they can get at everything. Because in effect, that's really what they get.

If you're not locking your OS, whether the passwords are stored in plaintext is pretty much irrelevant unless you're entering a master password every single time you're visiting any website which needs a password, which kind of defeats the purpose of a password manager in the first place.

Will all pdf image files end up being huge? Above 10megs..?

I have a jpeg that I converted to pdf, since the other part requested so. It went from 3megs to 13. I tried downsizing the jpeg -> under 1meg, but the pdf ended up above 11megs still... I'll probably just send the jpeg file instead.

That would be the easy way to do it

I keep getting this error message from gimp:

absolutebs2.png

How do I fix it and force it to load the bmp image?

EDIT: And on a related note, what's the word on compatibility of FS9 (FS 2004) with Windows 8.1? The only issues I'm currently having are some of the textures not loading for certain paint schemes on certain aircraft, and an inability to add certain custom scenery to the list of usable sceneries.

The 747 paint scheme that uses "textures.pa" from the screenie I posted works fine, yet the paint scheme for another texture folder within the same aircraft folder does not.

ı have a lap-top that has an advertized harddisk space of 500 GB , with an actual of something like 450 plus . Happy with the volume available compared to my previous XP machine with 40 GB , ı have filled the laptop with all kinds of stuff . My empty space is now 220 GB . At the same time the reaction time of the lap-top has slowed down considerably . Is that related to the lack of space ? If ı delete or remove my book collections and the like to external drives , will ı get some of the speed back or is it a case or what's done is done ?

Your system shouldn't get slower from having stuff on it, unless you use up more than 95% of your disk space, in which case ugly things can happen.

What usually impacts performance is how much stuff you actually run. There is a lot of idiotic software out there consuming far more resources than it needs to.

If you recently moved a lot of stuff to your computer, the performance drop may be temporary - depending on operating system and settings, your computer could be indexing the data to find things more quickly in the future.
This is one of those things that is supposed to happen in the background when there's nothing more important to do and shouldn't affect performance, but it doesn't always work that way.

thanks . ı don't have web connection at home and am an hoarder of stuff , regularly uploaded one or two GB everyday since ı bought it . When ı manage to get Ctrl+Alt+Delete going it's indeed some indexing that's shown to be that's active and "100%" of the Disc Space is shown to be in use for at least two or 3 minutes . So hopefully , it won't crash on me ?

back in the XP there was an utility that scanned the entire disc for the parts of files and moved them together for better access . Does Windows 8 have anything similar ?

thanks . Seems ı will have learn to live with patience .

You know you probably do not have to. If it used to work fast and now it does not you should be able to make it fast. I am not an expert, but the 1st thing I would look at would be removing any user installed programs that are set to start at startup, and any browser plug-ins you may have installed. The last thing I would look at is a re-install. I am sure there are plenty of people here who could fill in the gaps between these 2.

thanks . ı have only CivIII , Civ Assist and an Irfanview to see related Civ files installed , in addition to Adobe Pdf and Epub readers . How does one find those plug-ins ?
