And yet his life and teachings are consistent with that and nothing is consistent with what the conservatives want to beleive about him. It's not an accident that some conservatives want to rewrite him to fill their needs. They've been doing it for centuries. This is just the most blatant of a long history.

When I wrote the above, I didn't realize that this was an actual effort by the Conservapedia people. I'm able to reach Conservapedia now and I can see this seems to be coming from them. Here's their progress so far:

Oh yes! The New Testament has lots of stuff that could be interpreted that way. Helping the poor and sick, loving your enemy as your friend, money and religion shouldn't mix, all sorts of stuff! I'm actually surprised you didn't know that.

Helping the poor and sick is just being humane - some people think GOV is better at doing it than individuals thats not a lib or con idea ;P. Loving your enemy as a friend thats just wacky^^.
