'America' works seeing as most people will understand you anyway. 'American' is universal. While I say 'I'm from the States' when talking to Canadians, when I fly home I tell the people with gloves I'm 'American.'

I prefer THE United States of America although if I were talking to someone in another country, I would probably say the USA.

As an interesting sidenote, nobody calls the US "America" here in Brazil (America always means the continent). But "american" means someone from the US. And that of course makes no sense, but so it is.
