All of the above.

either of the first two options are correct.

United States of America, but it can be abbreviated to any of the others.

Fromally (correct): United States of America.
Common (not incorrect): America.
Slang: The States.
en Français: Etats-Unis

It's the United States of America. The United States, USA, US, the States, etc. are all acceptable. "America" is a gray area. It's technically incorrect, but most people will understand you anyway.

'America' works seeing as most people will understand you anyway. 'American' is universal. While I say 'I'm from the States' when talking to Canadians, when I fly home I tell the people with gloves I'm 'American.'

That might get you punched.

That's why you punch back, only harder.

I say 'America' then 'yeehaw' to pinpoint me exactly.

 :goodjob:

I prefer THE United States of America :smug: although if I were talking to someone in another country, I would probably say the USA.

As an interesting sidenote, nobody calls the US "America" here in Brazil (America always means the continent). But "american" means someone from the US. And that of course makes no sense, but so it is.

I'm sticking with Yankland.

Don't add the A. It sounds hyperpatrotic... like the chant.

Your right. Saying the States sounds lame too so...US is probably the best bet.
