COTM 02: Pregame discussion

Just kidding, ainwood!

Hmmmmmmmmmm...............I wonder which civ it is that we will be playing? It's not too early to drop a hint or two.............

Portugal beat Holland tonight in Euro 2004. So what's it gonna be, the winners, the losers, or the femme fatale?

I'm hoping for the Dutch but ainwood has a thing for dark-haired women Civ leaders... :)

Couple of things:

1. SE move is a good position for a quick start, stick to building units (boats, workers, settlers, warriors). If there is something great to the NW and you want your capital to be there in the future build a city there, don't join your worker on move 8 and abandon your SE city. Palace will move at no cost to you.

The free Palace jump is not allowed in GOTM, I presume that this applies to COTM as well.

Actually, the Free Palace Jump IS Allowed for both GOTM and COTM.

Here is the list of banned/allowed exploits.

(BTW, this COTM2 has generated a lot of action in the pre-game discussion thread!!)

Ah sorry, I must have been confusing the GOTM rules with the RBCiv rules, or it could be just the old brain not working any more :) .

Magellan of Portugal?

Lief Erikson of Scandinavia?

Columbus was an Italian who lived for a while in Portugal (again) and was backed by Spain?

From England there could be many, like James Cook.

Okay, I just found a site about explorers: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/

I could probably find a Byzantian and Celtic explorer if I wanted to spend the time. Dutch would be easy, even if I can't think of any off the top of my head right now.

This hing = Not a hint. ;)

EDIT: Ignore me, I'm an idiot. I somehow missed the MGL part of the post.

Vikings? Exploring and killing. Sounds like it could be them. An outside bet I would say carthage, Hammilcar was a famous explorer of antiquity who ocassionally waded in blood.

Let's try this again:

Dutch have Magellan
Vikings have Leif Eriksson
Spanish have Columbus
Carthage has Hanno
Dutch have Jantszoon
Byzantine has noone
Portugal has Magellan
England has noone, unless I'm forgetting something.

The really famous explorers I could find are Magellan, Columbus, and Eriksson. Of course I was edumacated (spelling intentional) in North America, so I'm certainly not an expert on exploration. Most of the world had been discovered before the Europeans came over.

That would seem to indicate Spain, Portugal, or Scandinavia. Portugal is expansionist, and there doesn't seem to be a scout in the pic. Spain was GotM 30, and I can't see a repeat coming so soon even with a trait change. That would seem to leave Scandinavia. The colors are wrong, but we know that Ainwood likes to mess with us. ;)

Anyone have a better clue?

Wasn't he more of a general, or am I thinking of the wrong person? It was his son Hannibal that did the exploring, while Hammlicar mostly invaded people. I'm not sure if that counts as exploration. Of course, I could easily be wrong.

It's not a portugal. We don't have a scout in a startup pic.

No Carthage... If you look at Civ3 Intellegence Agency, Carthage does not have a Hannibal as a great leader.. and even if they had i wouldn't call him a notable explorer.

No Byzantium for sure.

I highly doubt we will play Scandinavia. They didn't explore in the modern sense of this word..

So it is between dutch and english. Here are the names of ENglish and Dutch leaders I took from Intellegence Agency

English Leaders:

Edward
Boudicea
Nelson
Wallace
Cornwallis
Clinton
Wellington

Dutch Leaders:

Abel Tasman
Willem Jansz
Dirck Hartog
Henry Hudson
Willem Jantszoon

I am not sure if all those names are still correct in C3c but if they are I think Dutch might have a slight advantage.

Oh, and i only took in consideration seafaring civs

The Dutch have Henry Hudson as a MGL. Henry Hudson is an explorer of the Hudson River.
