Do we want an independent ruler, a vassal duke or what? It would probably be too boring to start with a king, as that probably won't go very far without being samey.

We probably have different ideas about what's fun in the game

I won't be too arguementative though, I'll roll with whatever y'all like

We probably do, yes, but that's the fun of a succession game - you only play one ruler and they all (by necessity) have different personalities.

I hate beginning as a king, but if I start independent or in the HRE I'll probably be one in 50 years. They're usually the most satisfying 50 years too, which is probably why most of my games only last 1-3 characters.

Right the SI poll is 2 to 3, so I guess we're not using it.

The only suggestions thus far have been Flanders and Scotland in 1066 (which seems to be the date we're going with). Do you guys wanna let the conquest play out or start with Willy on his rightful throne? That's pretty important to both Flanders and Scotland.

I'm fine with post-conquest, but I don't know how it will affect the game balance.

I'd rather be someone else, but I don't really have any notable vassals to play off the top of my head

So... given that I use the latest version, how much fuss is reverting to 2.4.5 in Steam?

Not at all, if you remember to disable Conclave and related mods.

That's because there aren't many notable vassals. It's really just Matilda, William the Bastard, the duke of Aquitaine, Erik the Heathen, and the grand mayor of Gotland. Everyone else is pretty unremarkable. What I'm asking is to pick a culture or region and rank. You can say "some Spanish count" if you want, or you can tell me a specific lord. You could also open up your game and look around the map.

If you don't like Flanders or Scotland, what do you like?
Right click it in your library, open up properties (last on the menu), go to betas, and click 2.4.5 from the dropdown. It's amazing to me how few people know this because it's such a simple process, but I guess it isn't advertised heavily.

So, some ideas for who to play. I'd favor a duke or two-plus-province count in a larger kingdom/duchy, so it's not too steamrolly early on, yet not too powerless either. I'd also favor being in a realm with minimal crown authority, so that we have the option to fight internally if conditions are favorable.

Flanders would fit that fairly well I think. Perhaps also some dukes in Croatia, Hungary, or Poland? Slavonia, Nyitra, Ungvar, or Mazovia? Or Nidaros for some nice Norwegian adventures? As a count, maybe Robert de Hautville in Messina, under the Duchy of Apulia?

And that's all keeping it Catholic. I'd be okay with HRE too; I've just already played them. I tried northern Spain once too and found it to be quite a struggle against the infidel, but that was the Viking start and they aren't as united in 1066, so it may be more fun on the 1066 start.

    HRE emperor lol

though thinking about it Flandern isn't that bad since we can mess in both France and HRE

It's just a bummer the game's going to start with the emperor conquering Ghent

France can win that war if we help.

But yeah I agree with Quint, duke or big count.

    Thanks!
Just never needed to do that before.

And yes, smaller starts are better.
Could even do with one province count.

I played a de Hautville game once. That could be fun too.

A lot of games use the feature, including EU4 and Terarria.

There's nothing wrong with the Alexiad start date. If nothing else, it makes the Byzantines weaker. :)

I just wanna know why cardgame specifically picked the Alexiad start.
