Crusader Kings 2

Over time, she'll become a white lord, possibly still a woman, known as 'Dubh' (Gaelic for 'black'). :)

I am pretty bad in this game

I started as the holy roman emperor
however, a friend of mine has it, and we've wanted to play multiplayer, but can never figure out how to do so. Some of the "multiplayer options", like metaserver, I have no idea what is, and when we type in the host's ip, it doesn't work. And unlike with civ 5, we can't seem to be able to connect via Steam.

Help?

By the way: Karen is a girl's name.

Well, unlike Civ5, CK2 isn't a Steamworks game, so it doesn't use its matchmaking stuff (EU4 will, though). The best way is to probably get Hamachi and use that. There are probably tutorials on how to use it; basically you run it, set up a network containing you and your friend, then use the Hamachi IPs to connect rather than yours.

You had me fooled, I thought this was part of the master plan. ;) Get into one of the empires, then fabricate a claim or start a plot, and get the other imperial princelings to place you on the throne.

Side question to those who have looked at the game mechanics: what is required for a Pope to call a Crusade? I've only had one in my game so far, starting from the 9th century start and currently we are in the late 12th.

About the only difference from the base game is that I regularly edit the Pope's ages to be in their 40s-60s and console-kill them on occasion to try and mimic a more realistic papacy. However, if there is some minimum requirement of prestige or piety that is required to call a crusade, I might be messing up this other key mechanic.

In order to call a Crusade, first off the game year must be late enough. The religion must have sufficient Moral Authority . And the Pope must not have called another crusade within recent memory. My memory is a little more fuzzy on the specifics, but I believe it's past-1090 AD, more than 10 MA, and at least 30 years since the last one.

Okay, so if I want to invite someone to my court and give them land so I can press one of their claims, they always wind up with super low opinion of me once they get landed, even if their initial opinion was decent. Is there any way to determine ahead of time how they'll feel about me so I can know if they're worth fighting for?

All right, so the actual time period when a crusade could have been called was a bit shorter than I thought. Guess I'll just have to be patient and see how it goes.

Thanks, I'm glad that my insistence that popes should have tenures between 2 months and 10 years is not messing up a core mechanic.

Lunatic is literally the best trait. I united Norway and had raided over two thousand gold at the time, and what does my runestone say?

Of note: West Francia has Aquitaine and Italy, Bavaria has East Francia, Sweden has freaking Burgundy, Jylland has Wessex, Mercia is still a thing in spite of vikings winning both the invasions, and the Abbasids have most of Egypt. Also, the Lendians went and got themselves a lowborn high chief or whatever, so I matrimarried my quick firstborn daughter to him. I have four daughters and a son, in addition to three concubines. Concubines are pretty great. I actually make 5 prestige a month.

You know you get +100 relations with them if you press their claims right? Sure it only lasts for 10 years but that's a lot of bonuses for long reign.

Lunatic is awesome. Possessed can also be really fun.

Both traits have specific events that can trigger. Possesed has some really wide ranging stuff that may basicially affect EVERYTHING (even make your character homosexual).

Good to know! Now my problem is that I accidentally picked a guy with a weak claim, so I need to see this count dead and fast. Just how poorly is save-scumming looked upon in this community?

Given the ready access to such a versatile and extensive list of console commands, I imagine that many people will be of the opinion that it's just another form of poor sportsmanship, but then, in a single-player game, the only person you're cheating is yourself.

I try to keep myself honest but there are a few times I want to play out scenarios that require some savegame editing to set up. That, and as I mentioned above, I save-edit for realistic popes or to rename kings and heirs in other realms often.

So no, I won't judge.

I don't care, and my opinion is the only one that matters.

I console cheat for roleplaying reasons. I don't bother to savescum anymore because it's too much effort saving the game, loading out, and reloading back in.

It really is. I've gotten to the point when something absolutely dumb happens (looking at you, craven events), I just use the console.

Homosexuality in CK2 is so poorly represented that it might as well not be in there.

I get the feeling that it's represented as the medieval world saw it; that is to say, they didn't. CK2 seems to represent a fair number of things this way.

Having studied homosexuality and homosociality in the Middle Ages the representation sucks.
