CTIV-3: Tokugawa by Sea

Roster:
ChrTh -- On deck
Jeff1787
Dantski
Gemini1706 -- Just finished
Morred -- Skipped/Dropped(?)
mjj55409 -- UP

I had to spend the weekend rebuilding a server. Unforeseen event. I won't be able to get to it tonight, either. Tomorrow looks good though. If you want to swap, go for it.

I did do some analysis of the save however. In order to attack Mansa we need galleons. They galleys won't work. As soon as we lose the open borders, the galleys can't cross the ocean tiles (they can cross the ocean with open borders because our cultural borders are adjacent). So the next turn-set will be focused on rebuilding our navy with galleons.

Morred, can you go?

If so, revised Roster:
ChrTh
Jeff1787
Dantski
Gemini1706 -- Just finished
Morred -- UP
mjj55409 -- On Deck

Okay, I may not get it for a few hours, so if anybody is around, do we want to push the war front or build up our infrastructure to stop crippling maintenance?

Out of Pocket Until Friday

Hey gang, I'm going to need a skip until Friday. Please persevere without me :)

It's been over two weeks since the last set of turns........

Turn 0 -- 1510 AD

Ok, Galleys can't cross ocean borders into a territory we're at war with, so I'm going to upgrade some to galleons first.

I also move troops around to attack Tekedda better.

Russia a courthouse in Rush.

Turn 1 -- 1515 AD

Nara: Granary > Theatre
Yakutsk: Courthouse > Granary
Vladivostok: Courthouse > Forge

Cancel Open Borders with Mansa. Start the Assault.

We lose one catapult assaulting Tekkeda. I raze it because its position sucks.

Timbuktu falls.

Turn 2 -- 1520 AD

Monty demands Astronomy. I snort.
Hattie wants to trade for Gunpowder. Nuh-uh.

Rostov: Market > Samurai
St. Pete's: Barracks > Worker
Novgorod: Courthouse > Forge

Mansa adopts Vassalage.

Turn 3 -- 1525 AD

Chemistry comes in. Start Banking.
Osaka: Catapult > Frigate

We FINALLY get a religion: Confucianism. I don't want Anarchy during the Golden Age, but we may want to see if we can spread it.

Niani has loaded up on Warriors (from the Northern Cities?), but I take out all but the non-Warriors with Knights.

Turn 4 -- 1530 AD

Osaka celebrates WE LOVE THE BASTARDS DAY!

Niani falls (even the Catapults kill the Warriors easily). I raze it because it too is in a sucky position.

Turn 5 -- 1535 AD

GW wants to trade for Gunpowder. Nah.

St. Petersburg: Worker > Granary
Yaroslav'l: Courthouse > Forge

Mansa sends a Settler to Niani's rubble

TO BE CONTINUED (Tomorrow)!

Turn 5 -- 1535 AD

After much thought on the matter, I'm not happy with my decision to go to war. I feel we're stretched too tight on troops. I think I'm going to pull back and see if I can get a better handle on the situation.

But at the same time, there's too much pressure on Timbuktu. I think I'm going to try to raze Gao and then make peace.

I kill the skirmishers and we have another worker.

Turn 6 -- 1540 AD

Banking comes in. Start Printing Press.

Kyoto: Globe Theatre > Grenadier
Edo: National Epic > Grenadier
Kagoshima: Harbor > Forge

Gao falls easily. I raze it.

I start harassing Djenne. Don't know if I'll try to take it.

Land troops near Walata. It would have no pressure if taken, so I'll try to take it as well.

Turn 7 -- 1545 AD

Another Religion: Christianity spreads to Edo.

Walata falls (with the loss of a catapult).

Ok, Mansa is ready to talk peace. I spare him for a little while for the cost of 1gpt.

I trade Huyana Astronomy for Divine Right and Philosophy WM and 20 gold.

I take a look at the Info Screen: We're #1 in EVERY CATEGORY except Imports/Exports, where we're dead last?!? We're giving but not taking, it seems. Hmm. Ok, I see the problem: Open Borders with too many Civs that are Mercantile. No, that's not it. Ah, I see: we have Astronomy, nobody else does :crazyeye: ... well Huyana does, so I Open Borders with him. We're still 10th, but at least we're getting some imports now.

Turn 8 -- 1550 AD

Huyana takes the Open Borders a little too far and asks for Gunpowder. I decline, as I don't want that spreading any faster than it has to.

Rostov: Samurai > Bank
Nara: Library > Forge
Timbuktu: Start a Theatre; the chop next to it should help it finish pretty fast.
Yekaterinburg: Worker > Courthouse

Taoism is now in our lands via Timbuktu.

Ok, I'm going to commit an SG Cardinal Sin and stop playing here. I'm doing this for three reasons:
1) I want this to be my last turn to even things up
2) I want to give the next player the opportunity to move boats/workers around as he wishes rather than start the post-war manuevering without a plan
3) It's Valentine's Day and my wife is slowly getting angrier :whipped:

To see if I can keep the game moving, I'm going to drop us to 5 turns at a time now.

Goal: Let's get our army modernized. I've started building Grenadiers for this purpose. I'd like us to head towards Cannons/Rifles tech-wise.

Here's the roster:
ChrTh -- Just finished
Jeff1787 -- UP
Dantski -- On deck
Gemini1706
Morred -- Dropped?
mjj55409 -- Dropped

If someone else would like to join, chime in.

Here's the save:
