SVN version 395:
I've only played 3 civs so far but I think a few others have also seen a surprisingly strong Cordoba (and Poland/vikings?)
Played HRE, Portugal and Spain (all quit prematurely)
HRE was working fine but nobody wanted to become my vassal

Elsewise UHV 2 of 3 fairly easily.
Spain was a vassal of France from the start. Cordoba/Moors had captured Madrid which was then taken by France leaving Spain with only Barcelona and sucking up to France forever. Portugal had Lisboa and Oporto. Poland captured Byzantion/Constantinople w/e, Kiev and Moscow. Norway/Sweden had St. Petersburg and France was joining in on the land grab too. On my way to capture Jerusalem I had to bash myself past the Seljuks who owned the area. Norway was the first to circumnavigate.
Had to fight off the Moors in the Mediterranean near Rome and Jerusalem, successfully did so. (Barbs in the Red Sea though that blocked Jerusalem :/ )
With Spain I tried 4 starts, all 4 had Barcelona occupied by France.
Stayed with the last start and hired a merc Knight after 3-4 turns and captured Cordoba. Took Barcelona form France shortly thereafter and razed Marseille.
Made peace and set my aim towards America. But the Moors weren't finished yet. Cordoba couldn't work the sea due to cultural pressure and I had to build several ships to fight off the Moor blockades near Barcelona and Santiago. Quit at some point around 1450 after the Moors had sunken all my ships again and pillaged the workboats.
Started with Portugal well, Lisboa and Ponta Delgada..
Whipped Monastary/Church/Library/Grocer etc. ASAP
Built Triremes, and lost and rebuilt.. I also had to send troops to Spain(Madrid) to avoid it's capture by the Moors, lost a few in the process (Isabella didn't even thank me for that.. still cautious towards me

)
Gave up around 1400, also losing the naval war vs the Moors. Ath Cliath(Dublin still Indy at that time too, and I think Norway/Poland/Mongols? had gangbanged and collapsed Russia)

Map alteration suggestion:
Increased food for Madrid and Cordoba, Cordoba not really.. but now exclusively workable by Cordoba.
Sheep south of Madrid move 1 tile south and added Wheat to the tile 1S of Madrid.
That way if Spain captured Cordoba the city still has food to grow even without the seafood, and Madrid doesn't have to suffer to make that happen.
Those Spanish Longbows and Pikemen used to be Portuguese(gifted them to save Spains butt..), and the Triremes were just added via WB along the the Wheat so I could take the screenshot outside WB.

Furthermore.. now that Spain spawns later it could have its worker rate adjusted. They are currently slower than say England or HRE which both now spawn earlier than Spain.
England/HRE needs 3 or 4 turns to build a road, Spain needs 5 (Epic Speed).
And either the tech rate could be increased or simply 1-2 more starting techs for Portugal/Spain. My suggestions are Meditation/Civil Service and possibly Compass for Portugal.
And Meditation/Compass/Engineering? for Spain if the don't have it already.
Italy which doesn't spawn much later than Portugal starts with these techs.

Another idea I had was possibly switching the UB's of HRE and Spain?
With Spain I have massive upkeep costs in the colonies, (-75% from Rathaus would be very nice) While I don't really build siege weapons..
With HRE however, I do build siege weapons, quite a few too.. the extra XP from Castle for siege weapons is nice. And fo upkeep.. well a courthouse would be just as good imo, the shrines give enough income as is anyway.
Or some effects could simply be altered/connected to different buildings.
Was thinking possibly an improved barracks for HRE(if no other civ has something like that)
And for Spain possibly still the Citadel but with a different effect(upkeep decrease, -25%)
Or a 'Spanish Mission', replaces catholic monastery. Decrease in upkeep cost or maybe something strong like a free GP or free

or

or

Say/think what you want about the Spanish colonial era and their actions and motives, but one thing is certain. They certainly put a heavy emphasis on building Churches/Missions all over the place. (Bonus connected to the forced labor among the natives sometimes/usually? involved with Spanish missions)
I also think the Portuguese UB (Feitoria) comes a bit late. Once I usually have Economics the tricky part is already over. It's a nice UB for any other kind of long-term game though (Space Race or so). Maybe the effect shifted to a Harbor instead? I think that's where it was moved to in RFCE.
