D'Artagnan01: Low-level Training Day

You know...looking at the investigation pics, it looks like some of the AI's cities are CxxC , could they also get smarter as they go up levels?

Not necessarly smarter, they just get more pressure from the the other AI.

Lurker:

It is the same AI regardless of the level played. As Bede said, it just the game plays out different as the levels go up or the settings change. I see them with wide spacing on an island in Sid games all the time. No one is pressing them.

You know, you know what that makes me? A shield waster. *shakes head*
A former shield waster. :)

EDIT:

The comments on universities are in Post #576, at the bottom of the post.

I also investigated Chicago for the heck of it, and it was in the 25-35 range. So all we need to do is pray HARD to God, Allah, Buddha, Brahma, or whatever deity not mentioned that Ragnar, Bob, and Our Worst Enemy (Abe) doesn't get ToG, and we're home free for Cop's and Newton's.

And ASAP, conquer some land from the Iro and England. Preferrably Little and Littler France, and our own source of Iron (First priority). I will go on a rampage if they aren't taken in some time. That is our rightful land, and no one shall take it. Also take/raze Buffalo and Seattle. And if raze, resettle as our colonies. On Buffalo Island, we could set up a good fort/science farm. How do you like that?

And we have Cop's in 3 once we hire a clown.

3? 3 for CoP's maybe. But I thought you were referring to a cascade, in which case America would switch its 25 to 35 turns on CoP's to Newton's and then possibly beat us on getting Newton's.

I was pointing out that Lyons had already 10 turns into Mag's, which would then switch to Newton's and beat Chicago for sure.

Magellan's needs 24 turns in Lyons right now. Once we get the Observatory, we can switch some 2shield tiles from Paris to Lyons to help speed up the build. This will be in about five/six turns, depending on the shields needed on the last turn of Copernicus's Thingee.

And CommandoBob, aren't you up?
Yes, I am, but I have not had time to do much more than the preflght. And after looking over Bedes' Post #576 I think the preflight needs to be reexamined.

If some one wishes to take thees turns, go ahead, a skip is OK with me. Just be sure to investigate Oil City and Trondheim, since I did not (yet) post a save after I did investigated those cities.

The pre-flight as I read it, even in light of my comments, is just fine. Nothing is building that can't be swapped at with no loss in the next ten or 15 turns anyway.

The important thing is to feel comfortable about winning the race to Copernicus in Paris, then putting Newton's in Lyons.

Let's go ahead and pay for the investigative work, just check f7 forst to make sure the priject hasn't moved.

I am very sure that we will get Cop's. Now, prayer sessions.

Dear *insert whatever deity you worship here*,
Let us pray
That the Vikings, Americans, and Iroquois aren't researching
ToG now
So they don't steal Newton's
From under our nose
And that they don't
Get an SGL
To steal Cop's
From under our nose.
Amen.

I've got the turns played, but need to get the turn log put together.
Overveiw: zzz and MMing.

I am snakebit!!!

All the CD drives went in the bucket yesterday so I need the indulgence of the indefinite skip when my turn comes up.

I will be lurking though.

[Still Preflight IBT]
Move the newly awaken worker 1NE to irrigate.

Hit Enter.

Order restored in Paris and Bordeaux.

01 0660 AD

Head to Paris, now size 12, with Copernicus in 4.
Cleared forest near Mousqueton is a BG, irrigate.
Move free workers towards the core.
According to MapStat, two cities have flip chances, both to Iroquois, Avignon and Planchet.
Move a Knight and MacemanWilly into Avignon, two should be enough to stop the flip, per MapStat.
Move five units into Planchet; MapStat only requires four. Just to be sure.
Save game, check MapStat. Flip probablity now at 0.000%.
[IBT]
Egypt wants to talk. We have an MA with the Vikings vs. Egypt for about 14 more turns.
We talk.
Egypt wants peace and will give the city of Abydos for peace. It is the last city they built.
Tempting, but we tell Egypt to go away.

Egyptian Knight 1/4, attacks WarriorYellow in Scandanavia and kills WarriorYellow.

Bordeaux treb -> treb, 30 turns. Considered switching to wealth, but this has not been discussed, so I don't.

02 0670 AD

New Treb in Bordeaux to Strasbourg.
Paris is size 12 with 28 food per turn. It cannot grow larger. Set to zero growth and hire a geek.
Iroquois have saltpeter to trade, but cannot determine from where. Will trade it for Chemistry. No. Or 604 gold. No. Or 34 gpt. No.
[IBT]
Rennes worker (letter 'T') -> worker, 4 turns.
Cherbourg vPike -> vPike, 30 turns.
Brest Treb -> Treb, 15 turns.

03 0680 AD

New Treb to Strasbourg.
Paris gave up the Mined Wheat to be at zero growth. Lyons now works that tile, grows in 6 (from 9), Magellans in 19 (from 21).
Mine the plains SW of Orleans, shields increase from 14 to 15, net of 12 to 13. University still in 8.
Wake the Caravel off Little France and get it to where Worker T can get on board, heading to the mainland.
[IBT]

04 0690 AD

Save game. Need more info on MM/improving the tiles in the core.
Bede said:
So at this point and on into the modern era, I like to keep a gang or two of workers in the core to trim the terrain for shields or food as needed. The objective here on in is maximum shields with only the food needed to keep everybody healthy. So "mine green irrigate brown" just may get turned on its head.
Move workers to change irrigated plains to mined plains near Lyons. Lot of food, need some sheilds.

Move vPikes into cities with barracks for future upgrade to Muskets. Longbows and Mace upgrade to Guerilla.

Good News
690AD_CopernicusInParisTrimmed.jpg

Paris Copernicus -> university, 11 turns.

Iroquois are building Leonardo's Workshop.
And JS Bach's Cathedral.
American city of Washington has completed Sistine Chapel.
Americans are building JS Bach's Cathedral.
Americans are building Magellan's Voyage.

America drops off a spear north of Rennes.

05 0700 AD

Drop science down to 20%, still learn ToG next turn, but +316 gold.
Need to swap workers Paris/Lyons to get Magellan's/Newton's faster.
Do so. Lyons drops to 14 turns and in Paris the university stretches from 11 to 13.
Around Lyons, set workers to mine the irrigated plains.

Consider attacking the lone spear North of Rennes, but do not. The rSpear is on an unworked and unimproved grassland. It is also costing Abe some gold in upkeep. If I kill it, that sorta helps Abe.
As long as the rSpear stays where it is, I think I will let it live.
[IBT]
America wants to talk. Eight turns left on the MA with Iroquois vs. America.
Abe wants to swap the peace pipe, but offers nothing more than peace. No cities, no tech.
And of course, no deal.

American rSpear moves onto the Wheat by Rennes. It shall die.

We learn Theory of Gravity.
We begin to learn Magnetism, 15 turns at 20%.
Change Lyons from Magellan's Voyage to Newtons University, still 14 turns.

Chartres harbor -> settler (new science farm), 5 turns.
Planchet Treb -> Treb, 30 turns.
Strasbourg Treb -> Treb, 30 turns.

Iroquois are building JS Bach's Cathedral.
Egyptians are building Leonardo's Workshop.
Koreans are building Leonardo's Workshop.
So are the English.

06 0710 AD

Set Science to 80% and we learn Magnetism is 5 turns.
Wake the vMace in Rennes.
vMave vs. rSpear (on our wheat), Mace wins flawlessly.

Swap another tile from Paris to Lyons, fisher becomes a farmer, Newtons drops from 13 to 12.
Paris's university remains on track.

Our military is weak compared to Iroquois and Scandanavia, average compared to Inca, England and America and strong compared to Egypt and Korea.

We are three techs away from the Industrial Age: Magnetism, Banking and Metallurgy, about 19 turns at our current research rate. We could pick up Military Tradition, but probably won't.
In the IA our first three techs could be Steam Power, Electricity and Replaceable Parts. With RP we get Infantry, while most others will have Rifles.

England does not have a source of saltpeter. On this continent, only Hiawatha has the stuff. We only need it to keep people out, since we don't plan on any major wars of elimination.

At some point we will need saltpeter to make Musketeers, our UU.
Don't want to trade Chemistry until Newtons is finished. The Viking switched to Leonardo's in Oil Spring, so it should be finished in just a few turns. Then the race will be JS Bach's Cathedral. If Chemistry stays as secret knowledge for a while longer, so does Physics, which is the precursor to Theory of Gravity.
My fear is that someone switches to Newtons on a Wonder cascade and beats us to it. Keeping Chemistry to ourselves for while longer will make that less likely.

Overseas, Egypt has no saltpeter. Vikings have one source, near the volcano at Copenhagen (connected). Incas have one source, near Ollantaytambo (not connected). Korea has none. America has two, near Seattle (connected) and New Yorks sits on saltpeter (very connected).
Total, six sources of saltpeter for eight civs.

I would rather give money to Abe overseas than Hiawatha next door. We can do this in seven turns, build our UU and use it to keep the Iroquois at bay. In twenty-seven turns we could be closer to Infantry.

So as much as I would like saltpeter I pass for now.
[IBT]
Bayonne library -> harbor, 10 turns.

English are building Magellan's Voyage.

07 0720 AD

Three plains that Lyons works are now mined instead of irrigated. Newton's in 10, instead of 11.
Mine one irrigated plain near Toulouse to help build the aqueduct. Do the same to two tiles around Grenoble, for the same reason.

Track the American galley that carried the rSpear.
vGalley vs. rGalley, our Galley wins.
[IBT]
English want to talk. Wants to swap WMs. Good idea, but not now.

Dijon library -> courthouse, 16 turns.
Rennes worker (letter 'V') -> worker, 5 turns.

English city of York completes Leonardo's Workshop.
Americans are building JS Bach's Cathedral.
And Magellan's Voyage.

08 0730 AD

Vikings have learn Metallurgy. They want Navigation and Physics for it. Navigation and gold I would consider, but Physics leads to ToG and thus to Newton's, so no deal now. After Newton's, maybe.
But Ragnar will not consider Navigation and gold.
He is willing to pay 33 gpt for Navigation and 74 gpt for Physics.
If we offer Nav and Physics, he is willing to give Metallurgy, WM, 5 gold (all) and 19 gpt.
Not good enough for now, again, due to Newtons.
Maybe able to trade Magnetism for Metallurgy.
[IBT]
America and Scandanavia have signed a peace treaty.
Scandanavia and Egypt have signed a peace treaty.

Iroquois are building Magellan's Voyage.

We lost our supply of ivory.

09 0740 AD

Open up CivAssistII.
In 730 AD we still had several turns left on two MAs with Ragnar, one on America and one on Egypt.
Save the game and CAII shows no deals, so we can trade with America and Egypt.
America has Metallurgy also, must have been part of the peace deal. Ragnar has Navigation, as does America.

Talk to England and offer Gunpowder, which she cannot use. Elizabeth offers us Ivory (which we just lost), WM, 8 gpt and 23 gold (all). We agree.

We talk peace to America, but they want Peace and Physics. No.
America and Egypt have an MA against us.
Egypt wants peace and Navigation. No.
Talk to Pachacuti of the Incas. We make peace.
Trade Gunpowder to the Incas for Spice and 3 gold (all).
Our gems trade with Korea runs out next turn.

Fire the geek in Grenoble to make food, now at zero growth, 'duct in 4.
Fire the geek in Toulouse to make food, now at +1 fpt, grows in 3, 'duct in 8.
[IBT]
Orleans university -> vKnight, 6 turns.

Lots of happy people. Palace Expansion. We build the rockets of stone.

We lost our supply of iron and gems

10 0750 AD

Drop science down to 70% and still learn Magnetism in 1 turn, at -9 gpt.
We have four luxuries, so I am not sure how important it is to get Gems from Korea. They will trade Gems for Astronomy.
Newtons in 7.
Woker V joins Lyons, brings to size 12. Swap a mined grassland with Paris.
Newtons in 6.
[IBT]

And the save is >>HERE<<.

Didn't have time to do a handoff, but not much is going on.
I'm trying to get a handle on mining brown and irrigating green, not sure how well I have done this.

EDIT:
One thousandth post. Forgot about it until Ansar mentioned it.
:woohoo: (I think, therefore I post)
