The last option seems closest. Inflation means that money aint worth as much as it used to be, with all respect to Dr Evil.
 
Wealth is controlling the means of production.

Power is controlling the means of distribution.
 
Being rich has more to do with the amount of disposable income you have available throw around than whatever assets you have.
 
In monetary terms it's relative. To have a millionaire lifestyle in the west you need a lot more than $1M.

If compared to someone who lives on a dollar a day I am as rich as a king.

Many people confuse having a millionaires lifestyle with being a millionaire - having debts rather than having assets.
 
How much debt does the guy have?
 
Rich is being able to live off of the income generated by your assets.
Wealthy is being able to live luxuriously off of the income generated by your assets, and that income is growing.

The amount would probably be different between what I living in the boonies say, and what someone from NYC would say.

I agree.

The people with the big houses and new cars seem to be the ones struggling under lots of debt at the moment.
 
Has or makes more money than I do!
 
If you have 1 000 000 in USD or liquid assets you're pretty rich.
