Deity Challenge #12 - The Celts on Pangaea

I have been working at this one for few days, and I must say failed miserably at first try. I think Huntyadown is correct in that Darius seems to have two settings. In my first game he did not build a single wonder, spamming immortals and support troops, and came for me around t60, or at least that's when he declared, he enveloped both my cities while I furiously pumped archers and PWs. I beat him back but lost a city and decided to try again.

In second try he built Zeus and Artemis, but still managed over ten units instead over 20. I took his cap quickly, then Susa and left him alive. I am already getting a reputation, don't need the hit for killing him. Then came decision time: I had a nice CB army and no clear target.

Spain was an obvious choice, but we had a DOF and she was a ways away with my army quickly becoming obsolete, NC and education still not finished and no XB in sight. Alex was a military leader and hidden in jungles with hills so no sight lines. Sejong was too far and friendly, so that left Harald. Only one caveat, he had built himself a GW.

But I was already there, well about five turns away through the desert hills, and I love GW as an offensive wonder. I find it hugely helpful in keeping my newly conquered cities from falling back in enemy hands. So he was next, it took some ,manouvering and I thought I might even have to retreat when his counter came and first city went back to full health as I dealt with it, but some well placed bait and pillage did the job. Took his city and cap and got the peace. Sejong was holding grudges against Alex it seems and I told him I will help in ten turns.

Still no XB but got t 105 NC, and 108 edu, so not far away now. Stockpiled enough gold for 3 unis, but I wish my cities were bigger. 1st religion, 2nd enhance: tithe, desert, pagoda, asceticism (1st for me) and itinerant preachers. I delayed enhance as my faith was over 350 and still no prophet so I got a pagoda. Hate when that happens.

Thanks Grnadeldef for this morale boosting challenge, i missed all of those early juicy ones and got wiped in some others, this might be my first deity Domination win ;) I have never led the score table at Deity, NEVER, even in games i won.

True, and I came late into these so I have few earlier ones to play if I get bored or have some extra time both of which are unlikely. But as I started this one I feel somewhat obligated to play this through in reasonable time frame even though it wasn't really my initiative.
Yeah, I've only completed one, have two saved in 120's, although both of them are kinda my games to lose I only need to finish them. Abandoned one and didn't have a chance to touch the rest. :crazyeye: I'm really glad people are enjoying themselves, and don't think anyone should slow down because of me, but at the same time being constantly behind takes me back to very very early childhood, and I'm not particularly fond of that period. :D

Lately I've amused myself with Light Cleric's China LP.
Who doesn't? :) I love watching LP's. They are indeed less stressful than playing. And get me motivated. :)

I'm interested in seeing Pilgrim's idea, he has very good ones!
Well, technically the idea is not mine. And as much as it hurts me, eventually I'll have to give the credit to the author. *sigh* :D

well if you have close neighbor and have to fight him early (DoW from your side or from his side) I think you should get units first
Yep, went much better this way. I was able to puch him back when he DoWed me at my latest attempt.
After taking persia cap, I would start build library and NC and start war with other civ. If you can manage wars effectively, taking other cities will ultimately help you in every aspect - gold, sci, etc.
Not there yet :crazyeye: Out of curiousity, what army did you have to invade him. And what army did hi had?
I've attempted a counter attack after slaughtering his troops, but he still had 5 or 6 immortals around persepolis and my surviving troops were not enough (i was 1 turn late for CBs as he killed 2 of my archers before i could up them during his attack )

Will keep trying this one out as everyone seems to think it's an "easy" deity map. Probably a good one to try to beat that level.

I won't call it extremely easy. #3 is easier, IMO. Secluded start, good relations with everybody. This one has good potential because of all the land you have to yourself, but you need to take Darius out or at least trim him down asap.

#3, good to know :)

Spoiler :
what a change of fates. i guess i had to give in and just slam out a military and wreck people before i worried about buildings. killed darius and inherited chichen itza, statue of zeus annexed persepolis as my 4th city, puppeted pasgarde. izabella decided to settle south of me as i was looking for a new target, declared on her when i marshelled up, puppet toledo, she took everything down on dublin by the gold but i made a big loan with agustus, walled and threw a warrior inside to sure it up while my army moved over, mopped and marched north, got really nice terms and alex was already set up in between madrid so ... peace and war again take seville from alex and ... idk what i want to do. My culture has been kinda meh but about to open up tree 2, rationalism isn't open yet sejong is sorta close with me but, he's in a bad box unless he kills everyone.

Thanks for this! It's my first one and I really like the starting location although I never played Boudicca before.

Turn 109. So far all good, but not sure what's next.
Spoiler :

Had 2 cities and NC out on Turn 60, Darius DoWs me on turn 72, I take Persepolis on turn 99. While I siege Susa (his 2nd capital) he asks for peace on turn 105 offering his only other city (Parsegarde) in return (has gold which I can sell, so I took it).

Now it's turn 109, just got education and I'm building universities in my two cities and got two more settlers ready (just want to build circus maximus first as well as oxford).

I also just saw a Greek settler lurking lonely between my cities and looking for a spot to settle (see pic). What would you do?
1) DoW Greece and take the settler ( I badly need a worker actually and even in the capital takes 3 turns to build or 310g); then move my 2pikemen + 6 crossbow north to take Mycenae and then Athens (but was actually going to wait for machinery/crossbows and work on inftrastructure in the meantime to consolidate my little empire)
2) Ask Greece to DoW Spain first (they have already denounced them) and then attack Greece
3) Chase the settler around with my units to make sure he doesn't settle near my new settlers which are already in position
4) Let him settle and have an easy to take out city for some military training before going after his capital. But note that there are no actual good spots left, still I know he'll settle anyways somewhere near me, so I would have to raze the city with possible happiness issue (already have issues now since I didn't expect Darius would gift a city)

Get Alex to DOW Spain, and let him settle, he might go 1SE which will get you a free city covering two truffles. Then you can wait to DOW at your convenience, if he keeps walking that settler somewhere stupid capture him. If you don't mind 15 turns of forced war you can prolly get Spain to pay you to attack him once they are at war.

I assume you spent gold on CB upgrades, hence hard built unis. Keep fighting, See if Sejong won't go for Alex as well.

I've played just over 4 hours into this save, fun game! Will be uploading my videos with commentary throughout the night. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLO2TQ35QuC4GOTG_ahWT8hI_b7qD59Gby
That's awesome!

I also played till t182. The most exciting thing that happened Alex dropped two citadels around Persepolis and immediately came to whine about my troops chilling on his borders. Needless to say, there were inside my territory. Arghhh... :crazyeye: I don't care about AI bonuses, nor about coups with impossible chances, DoW's, backstabbings etc. I can live with all of them. But little things like this piss me off greatly. :wallbash:
