DGIT # 3 - The Emperor Level Strikes Back

Inherited turn: My My, those Vikings are close. Delhi is rioting. Lux to 30%.
Ottomans and Vikings are up The Wheel, Mysticism and Iron working. Mayans are up The Wheel. We have writing in 21 at +1 gpt.

Turn 1: 2510 BC

I press enter and a settler pops out of Delhi, putting us to size 2 :hmm:
We need to get a pump going in Delhi, so i set to warrior till we grow a bit.
I gamble and pop the hut, we get a conscript warrior.

Turn 2: 2470 BC

Worker finishes roading wheat. Starts irrigating it. We need Delhi up to +5 fpt.
The Mayans pick up Mysticism.

Turn 3: 2430 BC

Delhi warrior - warrior. I keep this one for MP.

Turn 4: 2390 BC

Bombay founded by Forest Game and furs. Starts on barracks.

Turn 5: 2350 BC

Delhi Warrior-Archer. Be nice to have a little muscle if Ragnar gets nasty.
After founding Bombay, we are up to +9 gpt. 100% science won't reduce the time for writing though.

Turn 6: 2310 BC

Worker finished irrigating wheat. Moves to road up Bombay and chop that Game.

Turn 7: 2270 BC

Ragnar only has a warrior in Bergen :hmm: It is only size one, so he cant whip
a spear. We have 3 warriors on the scene..
Delhi at size 4, lux to 10%.

Turn 8: 2230 BC

Nothing

Turn 9: 2190 BC

A viking archer turns up at Bergen. Still only size 1. Delhi archer-settler.
Delhi at size 5, lux to 20%. I declare war on the Vikings! Warrior kills the archer outside bergen, capturing slave. Another warrior captures another slave.

Turn 10: 2150 BC

Archer comes out of Trondheim and kills one warrior. Our regular warrior attacks Bergen, and beats their warrior. Another warrior inside. Our conscript warrior attacks Bergen, and wins. Bergen is autorazed. A settler inside becomes 2 slaves.

Turn 11: 2110 BC

Viking archer kills our victorious conscript warrior. We kill it with our last warrior in the area, which promotes to vet. Our archer is on the scene now. I am happy with this war now. I will make peace at first oppurtunity.

Turn 12: 2070 BC

Meet the Mongols. They are up IW, Myst and the wheel.

Turn 13: 2030 BC

Delhi settler-settler. We have a pump now :D
I will found near old Bergen.

Turn 14: 1990 BC

Ragnar comes begging for peace. We get Iron Working, Mysticism, The Wheel, and 177 gold :D
We have horses north of Tronheim and south of Bombay! No iron though :(

Turn 15: 1950 BC

Madras founded. Slaves connecting ivory. Madras starts on temple to claim the cows.

Turn 16: 1910 BC

Osman demands 35 gold. We are a bit gassed after the Bergen battle, so i give in - for now.

Turn 17: 1870 BC

Nothing.

Turn 18: 1830 BC

Delhi Settler-Settler. Bombay Barracks-Archer. Ivory hooked up. Lux down to 10%

Turn 19: 1790 BC

Game chopped. Worker starts to road it. Writing in 2 turns, and everyone except Mayans gets it. Bah.

Turn 20: 1750 BC

Delhi grows to size 5. Lux to 20%. We have a settler in place for next city. Delhi's pump works like this:
When it grows to size 5, lux goes to 20% and the forest tile is switched to the unmined plains tile. It is a 5 turn pump, not quite ideal.

Looking back, and future plans

We will get writing next turn. I recommend we put it on philo at 80%. That will get it quite quickly. Philo gambit can be done here.
I suggest we get HBR from one of the other civilizations and horse rush Scandinavia. I don't like Berserks.

I am very happy with the way the war went. We were so cramped by the vikings it was unbelievable. Our warrior rush went well. We took out their first city after the capital. We built a new town nearby. We have a luxury hooked up because of it. We gained three techs, 177 gold and 4 slaves :D

At least Temujin loves us..

DGIT3Madras.JPG

Where two warrior battalions fell, and were another fought like a lion..

Very impressive set of turns! Ragnar will learn to stay clear of our cows. :hammer: Gutsy move, but based on sound reasoning. And great job getting that settler farm working. Lets build some rax in our other cities for some Vets. Ragnar will likely come calling again real soon, and I just plain don't trust the Mayans.

Hmmm. 90% chance of barbs... Conscript Warrior!! :crazyeye: Pretty amusing.
So, uh, moving on... Sandrock?

Yea, Madras should build a barracks once the temple has claimed the cows. Bombay already has one. The next city should build one quickly too, so we will start churning out vet horses. We need to get Horses connected up though first.

Ragnar won't be a big trouble anymore, we have really stunted his growth. With that and LK70, i have just had a lot of turns of gut-wrenching warfare :D

Im afraid im becoming obsessed with war in the game. I used to be a builder. Now look at me. Warrior rushes. Conquest win on emperor. Mounted warrior rush on Demigod. Bah. I am also in the 1500s in a solo emperor game where my original goal was space. Too bad i am destroying the hittites and persians with modern armour. *sigh*

See that. The game is getting boring for you. You're getting too good! :D Sounds like your many games are paying off. If only I had the time for that. Sigh. That's okay, I'm learning alot just participating in these SG's. I'm especially learning the value of a well timed early strike.

Didn't you know that 73% of all statics are made up on the spot?:p Anyway, It's somewhere in the range of 80-90% on poping barbs on goody huts once you've produced a military unit. I've played around with goody huts alot, and that's my avg success rate on Emperor... also, god I wish I could remember where, I read it somewhere on here or Apolyton.

Anyway, great set of turns Oblivion! Put a hurting on Ragnar quick... I don't think I've ever had a war start this early before!

I recommend skipping me. I have to work 48 hours over the next four days. I didn't think any turns were being made because I usually get updates to the thread in my e-maill. Imagimne my surprise to see three turn sets done. Also I will be out of town, Thursday and Friday, with a slight possibility I can get this done on Saturday. I thnik I'll just wait for my spot to come up again.

By the way, good turns everyone. And go for Philosophy, I don't think we have anything to lose.

Oooh. Looky, looky. I get to play some Civ! Alright (wife groaning in the backround). :D Cool. Got it. I'll probably play some tonight, but may not be able to finish up. DGIT tradition says 20 turns first round, but we're kind of mixed. I'll play 10 - 20, pending time. I want to keep this baby spinning.

SuBI1 has been a frustrating game. My last turns were played over 1 1/2 months ago... Most of the players have been MIA. But hope springs again as Balastulin is finally settling into his job in Korea (building ships of all things - too earily similar to SuBI1 itself). And surely I'll be able to coax Oblivion to take the game up again too? ;) At least with three players maybe we can finish the game by, I don't know, December? :crazyeye: But the game itself is/was definitely interesting. Really a weird research variant, if nothing else.

If your interested, stop on over and post. Its my last 1.15 game, and I really would like to wipe it off the books.

BTW, managed to get about 4 turns in of DGIT3 last night. Bangalore is settled, Philo is about 8-9 turns away, depending on lux rate needed. Next city set to settle in a turn or two.

I have 6 turns of my SuBI turn done, but it is a bit of a slog fest. Im just finding it hard to get much motivation when i know the game is just about won anyway. But i will keep on trucking ;)

What victory condition are you going for over there? If it's not an insane war situation going on over there, and is just some nice quiet builder turns that doesn't require much of a turn report, then I'm game.:p

Wrong game for you then, Alerum. Domination. By the seas, of course. Its down to a grind it out game. But you can abbreviate the turn logs as much as you want. ;)

But without further ado, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

Oblivion, the musically inclined, decides to finally rest having secured a stable footing for the Indian people. The festive celebrations have died down somewhat and the Despot is finally at peace. But a ruckas is heard coming from the west. What has stirred up the people so? Ghandi learns from his advisor that some loon on an Elephant calling himself SpikeIt approaches. He sings of Korean space launches and wonders how the Indian people have become so backwards. Who is this nut? Suddenly SpikeIt approaches, "It is I, SpikeIt. I have come to lead your people for 10, maybe 20 turns (years sometimes varying) and then I will swiftly depart. I yearn to rid the world of any infidels and help the Indian people domesticate these fine elephants for use as house pets. Doors will need to be widened, of course." Ghandi, aghast at the pure insanity before him, decides to let SpiKeIt do what he will. After all, he does promise to go away...

Looking at our situation. Madras to the west (crazy cow, ivory site). Bombay to the east on the end of our continents peninsula. We need to secure our space, but need to push east to secure land. There are two sources of horses in the area (1 immed. north of Delhi, 1 east on hills near coast. We also have a source of furs just north of Bombay. No iron though.

Writing due in 1.

We need to be exploring. Also, unguarded settler to south of Delhi, for which I presume is a cramped city site. An Ottoman spear is right next to it.

Horseback Riding is available for about half our treasury. I'm expecting demands at some point anyhow... Let's wait to see what we'll need for Philo. first.

IBT
The ottoman spear left our settler alone.
Writing comes in, start philosophy.

[1] 210BC
Slaves mine sugar.
Bangalore is found on the coast SSW of Delhi. It starts on a Curragh.
A warrior moves in to defend.
I'm thinking a horse rush to finish the Vikings and to get a third(!) lux.
Philosophy due in 13 at -2gpt.

IBT
Ottoman spear moves on.

[2] 1700BC
Irrigate game at Bombay.
Settler due next turn.
Philosophy now up in 11.
Sending archer west to explore.

IBT
Delhi settler -> settler.

[3] 1675BC
Settler heads west, to west of Madras.
Archer west.
Mayans have learned Math.

IBT
Bombay archer -> temple (in 10 - lux)
Ottomans are building the Oracle.

[4] 1650BC
Influx of gold allow me to run 90% at Philo, due in 8, lux at 0.
Exploring archer, west.
Slaves will road other sugar toward Bangalore.
Mayans picked up horseback now.
Math has been traded around.
Since everyone know horseback right now, I spend the money to buy it.
Send 146 gold to Osman for horseback riding. Now we need to get our horses.

IBT

[5] 1625BC
Increase lux rate to 20% to keep Dehli happy.
Work plains tile.

IBT
Mongol scout in view again in the east.

[6] 1600BC
Bombay worker heads to chop forest for quicker temple.
Extra slave worker roads other sugar.
Settler moves once more.
MM Delhi for extra gold.

IBT
Viking warrior near new city spot.

[7] 1575BC
Calcutta founded SW of Madras on lake. It can share cow with Madras, and will grow to take wheat. Its right against Vikings though.
Calcutta starts spear.
Nothing on the diplo front.

IBT
Viking warrior to our north too.
Dehli settler -> settler
Madra temple -> spear

[8] 1550BC
Archer settles in Calcutta.
Exploring archer to the west spots blue borders.
Can dial back lux to 10%. Philo due in 5 at 80%.
Settler heads to coastal forest spot for sugar/horses/fish spot.

IBT
Bangalore curragh -> rax
Mongols are building Oracle

[9] 1525BC
We're a bit weak on defense. Viking warriors are a minor threat with 4 turns left on peace. No worries yet though.
Archer fortified in Calcutta.
Other archer exploring.
Curragh heads south.

IBT

[10] 1500BC
Lux back up to 20% as Delhi grows.
Vikes have 3rd city as Curragh floats the coast.
Switch madra build from spear to archer. Best d is a good offense.

IBT
Ragnar is displeased with our Curragh. Moving on...
Delhi cultural boundary grows and horses are now in our borders, we could use some workers.
Bombay chop completes temple -> archer.

[11] 1475BC
Bombay worker heads to connect horses.

IBT

[12] 1450BC
Settler is on spot.
Archer runs through Mayan borders.
Curragh south.
Philosophy due next turn...

IBT
Smoke Jaguar asks us to move on. OK.
And then this...

DGIT3_1450BC_Philo.jpg

Now what tech to choose... Map Making is most valuable. Lit allows the Great Library, but do we want to invest in that? Poly or Code of Laws opens up a government tech, which we can min research and tech trade. We can still pre-build for Great Library and trade for it. I like the idea of opening up a government early, but we should be able to trade for the needed techs. I go for value and take Map Making.

Hey, what do you know? We learned Map Making too! :D
Start on Code of Laws.

Delhi produces a settler -> settler.

Oh yeah. Vikings don't declare as 20 turn peace is up.

[13] 1425BC
Lahore is settled and starts on a worker, due at growth.
Holy, schomoly! We have an SGL - Brahmagupta!! How cool is that?! :goodjob:
If I had seen that on Philo, I would have taken Lit for the Great Library.
Well, Pyramids, Mom, and Oracle are avail I'll let the team decide as I'm sure we have a turn or two of time.

Curragh spots orange border to south.
I decide to pursue CoL at deficit. We have the gold right now.

The Ottomans have Poly.
Poly could be had for MM and some gold, I'm sure, opening up Temple of Artemis as well.

IBT
Madra archer->rax. Doh! I thought Madras had a rax.

[14] 1400BC
I left some moves for the next player. 1400 is a good stopping point. Not 20 turns, but not 10 either.

Delhi settler pump is going strong. We must decide what to use our SGL for. Pyramids, Mom (nah), Oracle (eh), or Temple of Artemis (w/ trade). Or wait for GL.

We should also finish the Vikings off. We can keep settle west and have another spot or two on the east coast, but none are that great. Trondheim will give us 3 luxuries (we still need to connect the furs near Bombay. But basically, we need to spread out south. Indians should not be stuck in tundra!

One last thing. Just looking at the map, there is a dark purple border to the immediate west of Scandinavia. We haven't met them yet. Our northern exploring archer should pay them a visit.

Ghandi, having returned from a quick holiday in the young town of Bangalore, returns to Delhi to find SpikeIt finally departed. Instead, some dude name Brahmagupta is spouting all sorts of nonsense about science. Well, maybe India will have a use for Mr. Brahmagupta. Meanwhile, SpikeIt left some volumes about settler pumps and connecting horses. Ghandi, already in need of another vacation decides to call upon his friend SmellinCoffee. Maybe he can can find a use for those silly furs up north.

Nice turns Spikeit! I'm torn between the GL or ToA... i think ToA will be the most benficial, but I'm nervous about the AI science ability on Emperor. I think we can keep up with, or at least trade for techs, and culture in every city will ensure we'll never loose a city to flipping, and will be a great start to a 100k culture win... Hell, I'm going for ToA unless everyone else leans towards GL.

Got a suprise for you over at SubI.;)

The AI tech pace is sure to speed up, but I think we can trade our way to keep pace. After we learn CoL, maybe we dial back to min research on Republic and start hoarding money. As for the wonder, ToA would be nice for the culture boost, but the temples do go away come Education, so its limited. The temples will be nice to help with happiness too, although once we get our three luxes (yes Ragnar, those wines are ours) they won't be so important. Plus temples are cheap for us. GL is not available yet (we could prebuild or take it if need be). Pyramids - growth is power. I think the Pyramids are the way to go.

My vote - tall weirdly shaped pointy building in Delhi or Madras. Pyramids!

No, not ToA. Most useless wonder i could think of for a religious civ.
Half Price temples, goes away after education. No thanks, only in a 20k game please.

Great turns SpikeIt :D
GL is a very nice touch of luck for the first emperor game. First time i have got one in a game with a non-scientific civ.

I am sooo glad we clinched the Calcutta spot. Bangalore won't be so cramped if we take Trondheim :mischief:

Lets continue expanding and getting ready for a Horseman rush.

On the wonder front, Pyramids please, gives you such a boost..
I don't want GL, we would have to research an additional tech, we need to practice our brokering anyway - c'mon guys, lets make emperor challenging :p

As for where to place the wonder, Madras would be best. If we put it in Delhi it will mess up our pump..

I would say the pyramids without a doubt, food is the only resource that cannot be corrupted, and in this game growth is power.

Definately go pyramids.

sk.
