Do you look for meaning in your life?

I guess this is because for me I know I look for a greater meaning in life. Nothing religious or whatever, but I know I want to make my mark on humanity. Life is short, and I might be forgotten as history passes me by, but I want to live knowing that I made an impact in improving the lives of those who live, and who will live on this world.

Call it my religion if you will, but I think the prospect of a better future for mankind is my calling. Without it, I'm just an Average Joe.

If ones religion is helping the Humanity(its called Karma Yoga) then, I believe, one must see the Divinity inside it first or else one will be frustrated and bounded by its imperfections.

Why look for divinity? Why do we need to assume that there has to be something other than what there is on Earth? I know that humans are imperfect. I know that we're bounded by our limitations and that we'll never end in perfection. But I can do my best to make sure that we make our slow stumbling steps in that direction.

Anyone who thinks there's meaning in their life is suffering from delusions of grandeur or dementia, possibly both. Usually the former, owing to humanity's sheer arrogance.

No, why would I sit around wondering if my life has purpose or not when there is so much else to do that is a hell of a lot more fun and interesting to do? Especially since there isn't really any purpose or meaning as to why you are alive, just be glad you are and enjoy the hell out it while you still can.

I don't waste time searching for meaning in life.

Unless you count hugz as a meaning of life. In which case that's the meaning of life.
Of course hugz count.

Perhaps you see a mirage as an illusion because of the inadequacy of your thirst.

Those who fail to see meaning in life, fail to see meaning in life. An individual failure in such an endeavor does not mean all are doomed to a similar failure.

Your post is a fine example of humanity's arrogance. ;)

This reminds me of something insightful that my roommate once screamed from his bedroom.

It was Saturday morning and two Mormons had knocked on our door and woken me up. This was my first encounter with missionaries and I was half asleep and quite groggy so I let them in. They started saying stuff about their book of Mormon and asking me if I knew what the meaning of life is.

I didn't really have an answer for them, but my roommate sure did. The commotion must have woken him up.. I'm standing there, thinking of something to say.. and the next thing I hear is a loud scream from my roommate's bedroom:

"THE MEANING OF LIFE IS TO *BLEEP* YOUR WIFE"

They looked at eachother, then at me.. then excused themselves and left.

And in that vulgar phrase lies the answer to our question: The biological meaning of life is the spreading of your seed and creating offspring so that your genes may live on.

You are a spiritual person, so you have a spiritual meaning of life.

Me? My life has many meanings. There is no one meaning that I rely on.

@warpus - that's a simple but obvious way to look at it. I think part of the need to procreate (among other reasons) is a sort of sense of immortality; so, in a way, the meaning of life has more substance when what you have to offer is being carried on by the next generation.

It's a simple answer, but biologically correct.

It's really just meant to make you realize that there are numerous answers to the question depending on the context.

What is the meaning of 4? It could be 2+2 or the number of limbs I have or how many grandparents I have.. There are many meanings there, or none at all.

Humans are not the center of the universe. Why would our lives have a meaning ?

does that mean that only a centre has a meaning?my little finger is not the centre of my body yet it has its meaning...
and you forget about possibility of multiply centres in the universe...

Divinity or perfection is already on Earth. You can talk about degree of it ... So if you want to work for greater humanity you will work for more perfection in it and I will call that an increase of divinity.;)
Why would you want to help humanity to achieve greater perfection? Becouse you feel it will give you and the rest of humanity more satisfaction. But if you do it with the sense of ego your achievement will be limited by it as well as your satisfaction unless you do it unreservedly or unconditionaly which is in itself great achievement and proof that you have acquired considerable perfection in yourself.

Arrogance is one thing and dementia something else and suffering from delusion still another. Non of them has a final say if humanity is a failure or even meaningless.

No. I don't want to enslave myself to any idea.

It would seem, you already are enslaved by your limited sense of discrimination...

Intriguing... Made me think for a bit, that sentiment of yours..

But after a bit of reflection, I realise I'm still of the opinion that I still want to find a meaning in my life. I've recently taken to looking at people around me, normal ordinary folks going about their daily lives, and wondering what they wanted to make of their lives. Raise a family? Put food on the table? Have a happy comfortable life?

Then I think, "Is that it?"

I guess this is because for me I know I look for a greater meaning in life. Nothing religious or whatever, but I know I want to make my mark on humanity. Oh, don't get me wrong. I have strong, strong dreams. I have grand goals that are attitude-forming and large parts of my life. They're much more than various stages of hedonism. I have a motivating paradigm, and it's certainly focused on making a better future for humanity (and myself).

But it's not the meaning of my life :) Like I said, I'm sure that I'd want to live even if I didn't want these things. I've noticed that people who want the opposite of the things that I want are still motivated to live, so the urge to live is much different that my motivations for myself

Our lives are about as meaningful as bears and wolves. We are just here

The meaning of life? There is none. Life can't have a meaning, because its too many different things going in too many different directions. It exists for its own sake.

The meaning of my life? If I wanted one, I could have one, but either way the sparks die out and skin rots. That said, I find myself a very cheerful person who tries to watch the candle and the flame.

I see... so by your logic if there's a mirage in the distance I can somehow make it real by wanting it badly enough  ? I believe that this is popularly referred to as 'delusion.'

And yes, it is naturally arrogant that you believe you have any meaning in a universe of a billion billion stars and a thousand thousand galaxies and a hundred hundred planets, none of which are in the least affected by the actions of some relatively hairless simian life form on an ordinary planet in an ordinary solar system in an ordinary galaxy.

In all fairness, perspective.

Yes, that's precisely my point. You've clearly lost perspective if you find meaning in your life.

But the entire universe isn't in our perspective, just like the mitochondria doesn't live in our perspective.

You can lose yourself in the universe, but find yourself wherever you plant your feet.
