Does Espionage play a role in DoW-at-Friendly Cases?

EDIT: I had a vassal who he was Furious with, never mind.

Just had a game where Hannibal repeatedly DoWed me despite being at Friendly. I would reload the game, do a 1-gold-beg, and try to play on, but eventually he refused the begs. I had defenses up while going for Space, but my poor Infantry couldn't stand up to masses of Mech Inf (and I got daggered by Justinian on the other continent), so I retired.

But in this game, I knew I couldn't win by my typical tactics since my land was utter crap, so I just spammed Espionage buildings and ran something a hybrid economy. But while I used Espionage to steal techs, I also used it to troll Hannibal by repeatedly blowing up Apollo Program. I did this at least 5 times.

Did that play a role in his DoWs even if the spies didn't get caught (I only had a -3 modifier for Spies and he was still at Friendly).

Or did someone bribe him into the war? If that was the case, wouldn't BUG notify me though?

Maybe if your spies kept getting caught. I wouldn't know though, I always play with espionage turned off.

Weird... Only Cathy should declare at friendly.

Could it bee, that he started to plan the war before you got friendly?
Or perhaps that you dropped down to pleased for a few turns, and he started his plot at that time?

Don't know if the spies had anything to do with it.

If you had a vasall he dislikes he can actually plot war against you, friendly or not.

Technically, no. Any of the AI's can declare at Friendly depending on when they started plotting against you. For example, if they were Cautious with you when they started plotting then them becoming Friendly with you while they're still plotting against you won't stop a DOW. However, no AI plots at Friendly (to my knowledge, anyway).

This is true. Cathy can DOW at friendly but she has to be bribed on you.

just wondering if there are any random events late in the game, I've had this happen mid game with friendly Civs and have been offered holy war and take resouce myself against My favorite trading partners

There are plenty of events that happen late game. Usually, when I played with events, I had my airliners crash every 5-10 turns. Bermuda triangle, video game franchise, there are plenty.
