Loving the new patch on Win XP Home...

Anyone else having issues with aggressive Civs making demands for tribute and not being able to see what they are? The Aztecs demanded a tribute of me (they'd been kicking my butt the whole game, grrr...) but nothing appeared in the box -- not gold, technology or anything! Can he really have been so dumb as to not demand *anything*??? I agreed to his "demand" but still don't know if I actually gave him anything.

Does the patch work with win xp pro, or not???

The Vikings will rule the world once again......

At this point only in a few cases, in gerneal its still not compatable even though fireaxis has chosen to pretend that it is. so dont do it.

to .Dillo and everyone else

Thanks, i did install it anyway, it didn't crash, but now it´s demanding the civ 3 cd, which is already in the drive???
Does anyone have a solution.

The :viking: will rule the world once again...

I'm also getting a message that the CD cannot be found. The CD is there, in the same drive that the game was installed from. I'm running ME (not by choice) and have a CD-ROM and CD-RW on the system.

I found uninstalling to be difficult. Running the uninstaller in the Civ3 folder uninstalled the patch (sort of). Running it again seemed to again uninstall the patch (sort of). Going through add/remove programs once again seemed to uninstall the patch (sort of). The game files were never touched during any of this.

Uninstalled manually, reinstalled and did NOT reapply the patch. I'm back to where I was and things are working as well as they did pre-patch.

Firaxis, what's going on here? I need a patch that works!

Pretty please?

With sugar on it?

one Question- actually two-
How do you set those other resolutions (1260, 1078 etc)? I only get 1600X1200 with KEEPRES=1, and whatever res it gives me when I don't have that line in civilization3.ini.

Do you get the ghosts by using the F3 key itself and exiting the adivsior, or do you get it as well when you get to the miltary advisor by other routes (ie NOT using the F3 key say using the Games menu or or from the Mil Advisor icon in the Dosmetic Advisor screen)?

I DO NOT have a Nvida card (got Matrox Milennium G450).

thanks for the help- good luck!

hey royfurr!

I use QRES (quickres) to assign THE RESOLLUTION i WANT FOR civ3. Usually I set it to 1600x1200 but now have to settle for 1024x768 because of the bug (Jeff morris is now aware of the probkem and is working on solution - he has a separate thread now for bugs identification). Also, I have KEEPRES=1 in the INI file.

As for the ghost boxes, i get it from hitting F3, F4 and above. I have always used the function keys getting to the advbisor screens so i dont know if there is still a problem without using the F keys.

......This is a little bit ridiculous? I was scowering this thread looking for ways to fix my game and quickly came to the conclusion this simply isn't worth my precious game-playing time. Firaxis can get back to me when they

a) have a patch that works on all platforms
b) have a patch that actually fixes all the bugs
c)have a patch that easily finds the software loaded and installs the update

Essentially, I feel that I've already lost money because I can't play this game as the designers intended and as game players desire it to be. Now with all of these miscues I feel I am wasting precious time trying to install and fix THEIR game. Isn't that what I pay the $40 + dollars for? I didn't know this was Civ III: How to Troubleshoot Games Released Before They're Tested Training Scenario.

Hey Thunderfall, please just let me know when Firaxis finally gets it act together.

So the 'old' patch grabbed the wrong exe... what does this mean? Did the patch do what it said it would? Were the only issues those with graphics glitches?

I also don't know why the revised patch had the exact same version number... it makes it a little confusing for all of us.

Just venting...

Those of us with standard CRT monitors should use 'Standard' fonts.

Cleartype can appear fuzzy/grainy on a standard monitor.

P.S. The game looks fantastic now that it is at the correct resolution. No errors to report, but I am starting fresh. (New install of Civ3, the '2nd' patch, and no saved games.)
I have a 17 inch monitor and both myself and my wife think that having ClearType on is superior to normal type. I did hate how it made the Civ Summary Screen's(F1) text appear purple. Hopefully the patch fixes that for me also.

I have a 19 inch monitor and ClearType is far superior to the standard fonts. Everything looks nice and crisp with ClearType.

they should just re-release the patch and call it 117f (changing the text file that shows the version number on the bottom of the startup screen)...

this will fix a lot of the trouble people are having.

C'mon you don't need the patch other than minor tweaks do you? Other than a few visual bugs I doubt you've seen anything that prevents you from enjoying your purchase. Give it a rest.

Agreed. I am playing Empire Earth in the mean time. Its awesome. I am suspending my mod untill the get this game working right and on all platforms. Its not worth my time messing with anything when I can even use the patch.Seems to me though, the little response they are giveing the community, makes me think that they will never get it right. Who knows though. I will ckeck back every few weeks and hope they get it fixed. This by far the most unsupported buggy piece of software I have ever purchased. Man it has so much poteintial. It is so much fun to play, but I refuse, to untill its fixed. I have told everyone I know not to buy this game because of the bugs and poor support.I do reccomend Empire Earth to all who inquire about civ 3 however. Hope you get it working soon guys.

Sure is a lot of crying  ... just cannot stand by and read how bad the software is. I'm not having any serious game stopping problems and felt it is time to speak up.

Seems all we read about on this thread are isolated problems (and maybe some not so isoalated) and continued bad mouthing of this extremly good piece of work.:goodjob:

I for one, am having a hell of a good time playing the game, even if I cannot beat it other than on the lower levels.

And as far as Empire Earth, get real. It does not (and never will have) the depth of Civilization 3.

Hmmm. You must have never played EE. It has 1000X the depth of civ 3. I still prefer civ3. I also unfortunatly have come to the point where I absolutly refuse tohave anything to do with it untill its fixed. Its inexcuseable to have so many bugs in a game, then to release a fubared patch, that had to be imeadiatly patched, with a patch that was still screwed,if you call this a great game with minimal problems, then my friend you are a moron.
I am glad you enjoy the game. I'm glad the patch worked for you.As I have stated 100 times before,The patch will not work for me, and many others. I even reinstalled windows xp, and it still will not start the game. Its funny though, people say, well, thats just xp.No this is the only game I have had even the first problem with. Its called poor programing, and even poorer testing. We have been used as the beta testors, I assume they found this way to be cheaper, its unfortunatly gonna do more damage to Infogrames and Fireaxis reputations than good.I would be very hard pressed to purchase another game from ither one of these two companies for fear of the same problems.
I will come back to civ3 when its no longer all broken. In the meantime I will play EE.I can play it vs my brother online too. I really hope that they do get civ 3 fixed soon, because I love it. EE is just the best alternative to civ3.Seeing how I can only play civ3 broken, or if I patch it, not at all, EE is what I will do untill Civ 3 is fixed. You guys can stand up for these companies and this game all you want, you can pretend that we are all just makeing up these problems, but that doesnt change the fact that we have them. It doesnt change the fact That I e-mailed Fireaxis and Infogrames with my problems a month or more ago and havent even had a single reply, not even a We are working on it leave us alone. To be honest, the only person I got any help whatsoever from was Thunderfall. This kinda stuff is inexcuseable, heck I at least expected an automated reply, but didnt even get that. I am afraid these guys think they have made their money and are done with us.I hope that is wrong, but its all I can assume from the service and support I have gotten.

As someone who has played Empire Earth and the Civ series.

I have to say the Civ series sate my megalomaniac feeling better.

The bigger scope and versatility of CivII and III wins every time.

That said, EE is a fine game but it is of a differing species (RTS)
So comparisons are not really valid.

EE combat is intense and the teams really work!
I was saved many a time by my loyal team-mates!
But it is really a large AOE clone.

But ToT's scenario design potential is without peer in my book.
Civ three is still a cool game bugs or no, an XP pack will fix
a lot of the loose ends!

Okay, for you and anyone else who have not had problems. Try this: Start up editor, edit the rules for distance of 32 between civs, make a Hugh map 230x230, set it up for 8 civs, pick a civ to play, pick a starting location where you can build up a hugh empire alone. (Keep reloading until you are at the location you found in editor).
This does seem like a bunch of crap too bother with, but try it. I have used this with Korn's Blitz mod too. The game will crash when you pick your next tech to enter the industrial age or modern age. It seems to be a combination of things that cause the crash. I automate most of my workers. I try to have around 1 worker per city until the land is worked. Having a large world like this all to myself makes around 75-100 cities (sometimes many more of course) in some games. The game seems to crash when there are too many workers. If you stop all automation or remove the workers the game will advance. :D  However, if you try to automate or create new workers the game will again crash. I have had 7 games crash like that, playing easy to regent levels. I just yesterday tried removing the workers and the game worked. Not sure if everyone's problems are because of this. I run win2k now, 1 ghz AMD, 256 megs of ram, Radeon vid card. I was running win98se with same exact problems.
For those who wish to see why some are having problems this is one that I am sure others may have had problems with on hugh maps. :crazyeyes
Let us hope these complaints and discussions end, this will happen only by a good patch for the game through valid game testing! :D

Desert Fox :p

is there a no cd crack for civ 3 after this patch?
the old no cd crack that i used doesn't work for this patch!
