Download the new version of v1.16f here!

Also of interest to people having trouble with the game finding the CD... 1.07f used safedisc 2.40.10 while 1.16f uses 2.51.21...could have something to do with it?

The difference would appear to be this:

Previously the game did not mind which drive you loaded the CD on; now it wants it on the drive that you used to originally install the game. This is a bloody nuiscance, but I have ameliorated it for myself by completely re-installing the game (from my other drive) and re-patching it.

a win98 se ,gforce2mx latest drivers user:

after installing the new *second* patch
im not getting squares or other ghost lines anymore on the advisors screen.
and i dont have a crash after exiting the advisors screens.
but a new crash occurs after getting into all of the advisor screens(f1-f11) , and then hit esc, after i click "quit immediately" the game crashes.
other issue stayed after seconed patch-
ugly text on pop number(looks like a dos shadow effects)- IT LOOKS TERRIBLE and ruin the games clean and aesthetic look ,also its much harder to read now with all that black under the number!!!! please dan, jeff anyone how do i get back the cleaner look it has before the patch???!!!plz give me an answer.

When i install the patch, it wants to default the install to C:\Program Files\Infrogrames\Civilization III. When i installed my progrem, i specified F:\Program Files\Infrogrames\Civilization III. IMHO the patch should search for the current CivIII install (or for those familiar with Installshield, look in the Installer DB to see where it was installed) and default to that location. Some people may not pay attention and the patch will be installed to a different folder than the game is installed in.

... I have 98 and on a 21 in monitor run 1600 X 1200 .... hope Im not gonna have this ghost problem .... what are you doing, dropping your res down???

hi royfurr

i tried playing the game in 1280, 1600 and 1920 and all of them have ghost problems when you enter the military screen (F3) and then exit out. so right now, i am playing on 1024 which does not have this problem. :(

i am using WIN98 with latest nvidia drivers 23.XX.

maybe not a biggie in the grand scale of the overall patch but has anyone noticed that the settler does not "carry around" the city outline any more? i have not installed the updated patch however. does anyone care but me? :D

i am still a little confused, how can you tell if you downloaded and installed the correct patch?

the easiest way i can tell between teh two patches is to check the date of your CIVILIZATION3.EXE. If you installe dthe first patch, the timestamp for the file will show 11/28/01; the newset patch will show 12/7/01.

I've tested the new patch in 1600x1200 resolution (I normally use 1152x768) and it works perfectly! (Don't forget to add that KEEPRES=1 to the Civ Ini file though). The map screens work well, (even on my 19" monitor) and the city and advisors screens just appear centred on the screen (i.e. they are not full-screen). But all perfectly readable.

One important point - the 'fuzzy' population numbers on the cities are not actually a bug (more a feature). Certainly on Win XP the numbers now look perfectly clear. I guessed it was something to do with the CLEARTYPE effect that's new to Win XP. Prior to the patch, I had to turn that back off as it caused different problems in the text display in Civ3. Since I loaded the patch, I've turned CLEARTYPE back on and the fuzziness for the pop numbers has gone!

I have a couple of screenshots showing the 1600x1200 views with the wonderful clear text.

I'll add one here.

HI EXILE_JAN!

So you did not encounter those ghost boxes when you're on higher res and select F3 or F4 and exit out form those creens? hmm, must be happening only on WIN98 then...

Does anybody else using WIN98 with higher res NOT having rpoblems with ghost texts when exiting the miliatry screen?

I have been happily playning CIV III for the last 3 weeks, with hardly any technical difficulties and working around the functional "features".

Just downloaded the latest patch (the one with Civilization3.exe of 7-dec-2001 as shows after install). During install there was the CRC error with the civilization3.exe file which I ignored.

Now when I start the game it gives the opening screen and after that just a message box with "INSTALLATION ERROR No Civilization III Installation Detected" !!!!!

As far as I can see all the files are there and Control Panel shows Civilization III v1.16f.

What is going on???

btw, download came from the mirror site.

For some darn reason I can't download the patch from the http site. Is there an FTP site or is there something I can do to get at it? I am on the internet via cable modem and have had trouble with multiple http download sites before.

Thanks, I really want to get my hands on the patch.

can I install this new 1.16 over the old 1.16?

Usually this is not possible...I will check it...

Thanks for the new patch, but is there anyway to get just the corrected files and not download the entire 7meg install? Sucks when you only have a 24.4 connection...

Thank you very mush for the 2nd mirror as the first was not working for me. :)

NO. I tried it. You have to uninstall the old patch by running it one more time. The best thing to do is backup the save games and mods etc, and then reinstall the game from scratch, and then install the new patch.

That's what worked for me. No probs now apart from ones I make for myself

HiYa arnel,
thanks for the info-
one Question- actually two-
How do you set those other resolutions (1260, 1078 etc)? I only get 1600X1200 with KEEPRES=1, and whatever res it gives me when I don't have that line in civilization3.ini.

Do you get the ghosts by using the F3 key itself and exiting the adivsior, or do you get it as well when you get to the miltary advisor by other routes (ie NOT using the F3 key say using the Games menu or or from the Mil Advisor icon in the Dosmetic Advisor screen)?

I DO NOT have a Nvida card (got Matrox Milennium G450).

thanks for the help- good luck!
