Dumb and Stupid Quotes Thread: Idiotic Source and Context are Key.

Can a politician get away with being that openly sexist in America and keep his seat? I would be surprised if an MP in the UK could get away with it.

I would seriously doubt it on a national level but he's a state rep so it's possible.

After leading Socrates to worry about whether there is indeed a form corresponding to every property, Parmenides derives a number of absurdities from the result of combining the theory of forms with a particular conception of the partaking relation, the Pie Model. According to the Pie Model, participants literally get a share of the forms of which they partake, in a way analogous to the way in which those who partake of a pie literally get a share of the pie. The Pie Model comes in two versions: according to the Whole Pie Model, for X to partake of Y is for X to get the whole of Y as its share of Y (i.e., for the whole of Y to be in X); according to the Piece-of-Pie Model, for X to partake of Y is for X to get a (proper) part of Y as its share of Y (i.e., for a (proper) part of Y to be in X). What Parmenides goes on to argue is that the theory of forms is internally inconsistent on either version of the Pie Model.

The Stanford encyclopedia of Philosophy, on the Parmenides first part

This is really very horrible. Not just the absolutely ludicrous talk of "whole pie/piece of pie"/"Pie model" (WTH?) stuff (obviously the original text has nothing of this manner), but overall the summary is idiotic on all parts where it is not entirely vague.
Very poor work. :(

(and considering the above is a synopsis for the simplest part of the Parmenides, one can guess how the rest of this 'philosophy encyclopedia' entry goes- i read it, btw).

I'm sure if you'll just drop a line to one of the most preeminent universities in America and tell them they got it wrong, they'll happily make corrections.

Indeed. A bit like if i write an equally eloquent letter to some dumb US fatcatcrat in the media or politics, they shall see the error of their ways too, amirite?

(maybe first you should at least bother to listen to your own self noting to you that you have not got the foggiest idea about the actual text the above article, and myself, are presenting things about? :) ).

Of course I don't. I defer to one of the most preeminent universities in America knowing their business.

But they don't, at least on this matter. Their synopsis is drool. Granted you cannot realise that if you don't know what the article is about, but you may want to not be as quick to defend some view just because it is backed by a household uni name. ;)

And I suggested you write them if you think they're wrong... Not seeing the issue here.

The Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy is peer-reviewed, so I'm sure Kyriakos could volunteer for the review panel and prevent any further such errors.

The man who said it is a member of the state legislature. Not a member of Congress. It would hurt a member of Congress a whole lot more than it would a state legislator. America's state legislatures are, quite frankly, full of jackasses like this guy.

We have several MPs who love to put their feet in their mouths on a regular basis. The more outrageous ones tend to "decide to spend more time with their families" though. This chap is our latest offering and, in a shock turn of events, he's not even a member of UKIP.

That example is quite amazing. Not only is he being spectacularly insensitive to a group who generally are afforded just about the most sensitivity of any group, but as a welfare minister displayed a complete lack of understanding about the principle behind the minimum wage. AND he has kept his job!!!!

Buy a new tractor, now goes up hills!

it is a minor point, and I will probably qualify myself for the dumb quotes thread, but...

with hilltop farming a tractor should go across the hill, not up, nor down

Nah, the fault is kind of mine, what's with me and English not always agreeing with each other.

Our Prime Minister just threatened to "shirtfront" Vladimir Putin. That essentially means to grab him by the shirt and throw him to the ground. It's a reference to Aussie Rules football, and I'm not a fan, so I'm not 100% certain of that description, but it is a physically aggressive manoeuvre.

Putting aside the general inappropriateness of one head of government threatening to physically harm a foreign power's head-of-state when the latter visits the former's state for a conference, I don't think anyone in the world, except Tony "I did some student boxing once" Abbott, genuinely believes he stands a chance against Vladimir "6th degree black-belt in Judo" Putin. It would be the equivalent of a guy who did some wrestling in high school threatening to kick Brock Lesnar in the testicles.

So, yeah, we have idiots in politics here too. We even put them in charge of the country!

^Don't know about the previous Australian PMs, but Abbott does sound and look very stupid. The videos of his death-staring reporters are also rather twilight-zone material :)
