Dumb and Stupid Quotes Thread: Idiotic Source and Context are Key.

Unless, of course, Poe's Law is irony. But that's some heavy stuff right there and I'm getting a bit dizzy.

Irony died in 2014 when every Super Bowl ad used it.

No, irony used properly in Super Bowl ads means that not only irony is dead, but so is everything else.

I should tell all those clinical researchers in my department that they're not in applied science. Apparently hospitals and patients aren't part of the real world. Also, where's the fieldwork, high-energy physics pukes?

"Fieldwork is a critical part of science. Some researchers can restrict their work to a lab, synthesizing chemicals or running analyses. But scientists in disciplines that are more applied, such as anthropology and geology, often take their research out of the lab and into the real world. They go out and collect samples, take measurements, and gather data to analyze later."

Sultan Erdogan of Turkey said:
We cannot do like (byzantine emperor) Romanos Diogenes and look for people with a lens.

:rotfl:

Double win. Confusing Diogenes the Cynic with Romanos Diogenes the Emperor, and calling the lantern of Diogenes a lens :D

I didn't know microorganisms were metazoans. And I guess the Biblical patriarchs all died early because of a lack of any disease resistance.

There wasn't a separate ship for bacteria, so it has to be like that :yup:.

"The United States of America is awesome. We are awesome. We've closed the book on [torture], and we've stopped doing it...This administration wants to have this discussion to show us how we're not awesome. They apologized for this country, they don't like this country. They want us to look bad."

Is she for real? That sounds like something a left-wing/non-American spoof programme would have her say.

Yeah, you gotta go watch the clip. The unqualified self-satisfaction in her intonation of the lines makes it even more cringe-inducing than comes through in the printed transcription. It is self-caricaturing in exactly the way you suspect.

Nice legs :)

But these 'journalists' are just the other (and equally crap) side of the coin that cnn/nbc 'journalists' are, much like gop=dem anyway.

This is the new mantra of the right wing.

They have no policies which would help everyday Americans, and so they blow smoke with their hollow claims that the Dems are as bad as the GOP and that CNN and other news media which broadcast the [gasp!] mainstream news is just as bad as Fox News, which is nothing more than a propaganda organ of the Republican Party.

At least the women on fox look like actual women. That is worth something as well :)
Obviously those networks are not about news. But neither is cnn/nbc. They are indeed equally crappy. You may artificially set head or tails as the winning side, but they are made of the same corroded and by now toxic matter, and you already lost by touching that coin in the first place ;)

News is bad in general. The irony is that when people single out Fox, everything argument against it is true for nearly any news media outlet.

It's one of those somebody's law things. Can't recall the name. It's become impossible to tell the difference between the lunatic right and people parodying the lunatic right.

Poe's Law. Also usable for religious fundamentalists and basically any sufficiently extreme position.

"[T]he highly aggressive Bismarck was far from a reluctant war-maker. In power from 1862 to 1890 he engineered three short wars – they’re where the word “blitzkrieg” comes from – against Denmark (1863), Austria (1866) and France (1870) to turn Prussia into the Second Reich (1871-1918) – the first had been medieval – and fatally undermined Germany’s fragile liberal institutions at a critical stage of their evolution.

What Germans got instead was a militarised monarchical autocracy sustained by rampant nationalism and supported by intellectuals of all kinds – sociologist Max Weber later repented his enthusiasm – who should have known better. Parliament was marginalised, the parties manipulated against each other, and Bismarck threatened to resign whenever he was seriously challenged. It was outrageous and it ended in the ruins of Berlin of 1945."

- Michael White, "How has Bismarck escaped most of the blame for the first world war?", The Guardian

I'm glad Dachs isn't here, or he'd probably have an aneurysm seeing this in a national newspaper. As it is, I'll just be killing Owen, Ajidica and maybe Flying Pig.
