DWG01-Behind Enemy Lines, OCC, AW

Obligatory Pre-Turn Gripes

marine-AD1166-city-improvement.jpg

What ruff said ... mines outside BFC brings nothing, unless there is resources. The cottage is also useless ... it should e apparent to everyone now that cottage is totally useless for an OCC.

The worker is better off spent building roads out, it hasten our forces movement.

Also, the triremes should stay where they were within our culture, although unlikely, but we must protect our nets.

Objectives for this Turnset
  • Get a level 4 unit
  • Build Heroic Epic
  • Build Cavalry
Should be easy ....

Report

I delayed University of Sankore for Oxford, as Oxford would bring far more beakers (3 :science: per scientist) than UoS (6 :science:, 2 per Hindu building).

marine-AD1196-scientists.jpg

As if on cue, we get a great scientist the same turn as we get the Oxford ... speaking of coincidence.

marine-AD1208-UoS.jpg

2 turns, University of Sankore is built.

marine-AD1190-liberalism.jpg

Liberalism is in, we get Mil. Trad as planned.

marine-AD1190-military-trad.jpg

Cavalries, however, need Horseback and Gunpowder. Hmmm ... the last objective is not as easy as it seems.

So, I proceed to get HR and Gunpowder:

marine-AD1250-cavalry.jpg

And we produce our first cavalry by the last turn of my 14-turns (played 14 to bring us back to a good year). Whew, 3rd objective accomplished. Barely.

I proceed on to get currency for enabling market and more importantly grocery (need Guilds). The price of getting currency is I'll have to endure all those messages about who had whatever amount of gold to trade ... totally spam in this game

I also got us Compass and heading for Optics. This is continent map, we should try to go towards astronomy and be done with it. Of-course equally important is that compass enables harbor, which will bring +1 :health: per seafood.

After a serious of attacks, I got us a 10exp mace. I would normally not give cover promotion, but since all AIs are still building hordes of archers, this is not that wasteful.

marine-AD1202-level4.jpg

And the Heroic Epic was built. Objectives accomplished :D

Next player may want to try pushing him to 17exp :groucho: for West Point. There is a multinational stack nearby for that purpose, but our archer is most certainly toast.

Suggestions for Next Player

>>> The Save (1250AD) <<<

I don't think we need any more wonders ... tempting as it might be, the Taj Mahal is really a waste of hammers since the hammers put into it is worth more than the amount of hammers and commerce (note it is commerce, not beakers!) a golden age would bring.

We should concentrate on producing cavs, navy and perhaps siege engines. Try to get us the circumnavigation bonus, it will speed up the game ;)

This is my "got it". Greyfox, you and i I are on the same page here. The Taj is a waste in a OCC unless i can do it in 4 turns. My goals for my round will get Theology for additional XP, get a Great General, Make a Medic 3, build West Point, build roads toward our enemies and build lotsa toys for the next player to wage war with. Ill send out a couple of caravels too.

1256...Optics---> Theology

1268...Theology-->Monarchy
Im heading to the free merchant from Economics through guilds

1280...Were getting some Skirmishes here
Civ4ScreenShot0001a.jpg

1286...RETREAT!!! There are 26 units in these stacks. My units are allready wounded and will retreat till reinforcements arrive. We get a GG and I attach him to our Medic maceman. Maybe not the best choice, but i wanted to make sure i could get West Point.
Civ4ScreenShot0002a.jpg

1304...They just keep pouring in. I retreat our units back to our Medic General and had to promote them all during battles.
Civ4ScreenShot0005a.jpg

1322...Guilds---> Banking

1328...Jeez, that General medic really is the shiznit. Im ripping up their stacks, but they keep comong. Note: Im not attacking anything with the general, Im not gonna be the one to lose him. I think Ive built enough units and can pause that and put some hammers in West point (8 Turns)

West Point due in 4. As you can see below, Im growing the city. At what point do we stop growth because of unhealthiness? When do we get Chemistry and obsolete Parth? We still cant build all units in 1 turn, so the next GG should be used for the academy...everyone agree?

I think we should upgrade triremes to caravels, it's quite cheep and the spearman to pikeman. I agree with mil. acad.
Unhealthy city means -food, so we can run fewer specialists. I wouldn't go above size 19. I don't worry about Parthenon, grenadiers and frigates are more important, we can go steel after that for cannons.

Well, we can grow into some unhealthiness and it will still be better than not doing it.

Example:
We are at 42 Food produced and 36 food eaten
and 20 Health / 19 Unhealthiness

next pop( size 19 ) assuming we assign him as a specialist
42/38 food...Great Merchant from Economics will make it 43/38
and 20/20

if we grow another pop(size 20 ) and grow into 1 unhealthiness....still assigning the extra citizen to a specialist so no extra food is produced
43/41
and 20/21

at this point, you can take a citizen off those sea tiles and use him as a specialist which would make it 43/43 and it stops growth

if you grow to size 21 and use the citizen to work a tile with 1 food
44/44
and 20/22
but in this example, youve taken the specialist you had moved off the sea tile above and put him back on it

past 20 and it doesnt look productive. Allthough 20 seems right for now, once we get factories, coal plants...itll change.

44/44 42/44 -> starvation
and 20/22

OK, we agree in 20 then :D
My point was when you go unhealty the next citizen should work on a 3 food tile at least (except if you have food surplus, but that is not optimal, better to move citizen to specialist), to make it even and we don't have such one.

any news on this?

Ruff, his 48hrs ends at 2:27 today. Hopefully he will have it in (maybe with a few pics this time). If he hasnt posted, then Ruff, post a "got it".

I was at a conferance for the last two days, sorry about that.

Anyway, I'll set up a detailed report tonight.

just a heads up ... I cannot play until Sunday lunch (NY time) so I'm happy to take a skip swap of two to not hold this game up.

So, ya'll want reports with pretty pictures....

I usually don't put them because my comp has trouble handling the screenshot process..anyway...

When I took over the city-state, we had a strong military core, and a massive tech advantage. That being so, we decided on a bold stroke - wiping out Egypt this turnset.

The plan to accomplish this was to send our five cavs (one was upgraded to medic 2, the others with strength) on a raid on Thebes, save our Marines there, then send that enlarged strike south to start razing other AI capitals and saving our troops.

Meanwhile, the back stack would be responsible for razing all the other towns along way.

As for the homefront, as we would be essentially elimnting ny home guard defence, we would build 2-3 cavs to defend against incursions as they come.

-----------

So...we marched grandly off. Our Cavs flew by town after town, avoiding battle, finally stopping to raze Memphis because it just had two archers, and we could use the workers for a road crew in this terrain.

Razing1.GIF

We then headed off to deal with Thebes...meanwhile in the east, our regulat stack had felled one Egyption wine outpost, and was looking for others to munch on.

Things got intersting in the domestic affairs department. We built West Point, and then a stone Pyramid for the GP points (we might try Sistine next as it's a stone resource). Also, we had a few births as it were...

GP1.GIF

An Engineer followed along near the end of the set.

More importantly, my daring tactics were rewarded with...

GG1.GIF

Yeah finally, and he was set to work making an Academy.

In the west, our little move payed off when...

Capitalraze.GIF

And, our Cavs and our Marines got reaquainted. One down, a few too many to go.

Now, in techs, I picked up Consitution with an idea to run towards Democracy and the SoL. I consdered heading straight to Lumbermills, but, that would have taken the whole tunrset, and we were not able to have time to produce the workers needed to create them.

So, my final points...we're in good shape. I'd urge our Marine/Cavs pack to attack Athens at once, and save the Marines there AT ONCE, and save them. Then we'll have a powerful attack stack we can head into Isabella with. As for the northern Egyption city, a quick attack there would be appreciated with a the mixed stack. I do have ONE concern. The Mace GG NEEDS to have the 100% combat exp promotion...please add this to him, and then bolster our force with a few extra seige/Cavs.

Anyway, my biggest request is we get Lumbermills/Galleons/Railroads within the next three turnsets. We can do that, I'm sure.

Used workers to build road to Berlin.
Do we want to pillage empty land to reduce the temptation of enemy building new cities? I did some but not many.

After Combat3 I gave March (can heal while moving) promotion.
Maybe we don't need any other tehs, but GSs keep researching ;)
I continued Printing Press as it needed for Replacable Parts or we can switch to Chemistry for Frigates (usefull to reduce defences of coastal cities) and Steel for Cannons after that.
