Well i for one will not be buying it unless they can guarantee that they are going to release european patches in a sensible time period.

I am severely pissed off with the way we have been treated with PTW.

How about giving the patch for PTW to Europeans rather than starting on a new project.

oh same here!!
i would have thought europe would be more important because more people live in europe than USA and canada, and probably (although i have no info to back this up) more people own civ in Europe

That's what monarchy is (they're adding a Sultanate)

I haven't read any of your remakrs, but I must say this:

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

Well some of these new features look interesting, but I have one major caveat. Here's what I wrote to Firaxis earlier today:

Dear Firaxis,

I read on the web today the announcement that you have a new exp pack for Civ3 planned; Civ3Conquests.

I would humbly suggest that before you release this exp pack you first address the fact that non-US ptw players STILL have not got the 1.21f patch!! This is bordering on the ridiculous.

To make things worse rumour has it a new ptw patch is imminent for US release, so even if we get the long delayed 1.21 patch in europe tomorrow, as soon as you release a new patch we will be in exactly the same position again!

I play ptw pbem, I like to play games with people in the US as well as europe. At the moment they either have to downgrade to 1.14 or we can't play. This is ridiculous!!

I am told that it is the european distributors who are responsible for the late patch releases here, but I hold YOU responsible as the developers, you choose who should distribute your software outside the US. You need to be aware that they are eroding the goodwill of your customer base outside the US.

I will not buy any more Firaxis products until I feel I am getting reasonable support from your company. I will also urge others to do the same, after all, the dollar is king.

Yours sincerely,
Ben Craven-Griffiths (an avid but disgruntled Civ Fan.)

who knows if I'll get a response.

i dont need to read why because i know, they had bad tech compared to cortez and his men and they got many diseases they couldnt stand up to that they hadn't encountered but the europeans had and other stuff

The book about isn't about that Cortez, et. al, having better tech, diseases, etc., that is well known, but WHY.

I wouldn't be suprised if you didn't

We want better A.I.... just that I'll be very very very happy!!

What the hell with 8 new civ... the A.I. will do the same thing over and over... better A.I. will be interesting, new A.I. will change the whole experience of playing civ.

Even if the game got 8 new civ, or wonder... If the A.I. dont change how he played, I think it's not really fun!

It will be cool, if the A.I. can challenge the human.

When they talk about more diplomacy,I sincerely hope they make it at least as good as in Alpha Centauri. There I could actually do diplomacy and not just declare war or make peace.Hopefully these improvements will also include the editor.
The disasters thing sounds quite interesting...

I will say this: I will not get PTW!!! I will get the new expansion the day it comes out!!!!!

Atari will not make the same mistake as it did with PTW! If they decided to make more expansions they certainly had the confidence to make a quality Civilization game!
Conquest will certainly open a brand new chapter in the Civilization series and I would not be surprised if it would be the best game ever! :) ;) the people from Atari have goten the Idea of what players want so the game will obviously be much faster (considering that it will then have 32!!!!! Civs), have MUCH bigger maps, different graphics, Much beter diplomacy etc etc etc. I can go on forever with this!!!!

I just hope that we do not need to have PTW but just the original Civilization 3 to play. Oh, and WHY would we need PTW to play anyway????

Gotta admit that they took us by surprise!!!!!!!!:)

I'm just glad that Sid Meier/Firaxis have cemented their relationship with Infrogames (Atari whatever)......immediately after Civ 3 was released their seemed to be alot of tension b/w the two companies, but now everything seems to be rosy. I hope that they have learned from their mistakes, b/c if they have this could be a really good XP. Maybe a new start with a new name......

The book explains why Europeans had the technology, why they had the diseases and explains why it wasn't Montezuma who crossed the Atlantic and attacked Spain. It also explains other things like why Australia was still in the Stone Age and why China didn't dominate Europe...

Do you want to tell us why?

or just advertise?

No I'm not advertising! :)

It's a really good book. All civ players like history to some degree or they wouldn't play the game.

Read the book for the details, but some of the reasons some civs developed faster than others was because of the availability of easily domesticated plants and animals, latitude, and continental axises.

The problem is that Firaxis doesn't do the European releases at all. Atari is in charge of that.

I don´t really know why so much joy about the new release. We only know that in this new release there will be eight new civs with their special units and a few more wonders. Quite a few people have already been creating new civs with their special units and posting them here, very often with amazing graphics. So, why so much joy about this expansion when they are going to sell you what others are sharing for free?

It would be exciting if they told us they have improved the AI strategy and tactics, at least correcting the most common mistakes that we all exploit to win. It would be exciting if they told us they have teached the AI more things to play better, otherwise I don´t really see why people would be willing to pay for the expansion.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

The Aztecs were indeed bloodthirsy. I am not trying to excuse Spain for what we did, but in the name of the historical accuracy:

1- Thei religion was focused in the human sacrifices.
2- They already conquered another civilizations in order just to sacrifice them all. This is calll genocide, dude.
3- All their society was war oriented, with an upper class of warriors and priests.

The reasons of the victory of Spain over them was basically:
1- Diseases. We all know the story.
2- Cultural impact. They thought that the Spanish were Gods, so...
3- Internal corruption. Their empire was near to fall due to the petrification of their social classes and rigid religious hierarchy (their technologic inferiority was quite explained...)
4- The rest of the South American civs were arisen agains them. In fact they looked to the Spanihs like God- sent libertators against the Tyran Moctezuma (althoug then the Spanish also conquered them). Very few Spanish soldiers fought against them, the main forces were antoher american natives. The Spanish justt united and organized this opposition against the Aztecs.

What did NOT bring the victory:
1- Guns. They had, but their number was ridiculous, and they needed supplies beyond the Atlantic in order to keep them working, so no, they didn't paid a mayor role, it was more a psiclogogical impact...
2- Hordes of Spanish soldiers. THe number of Spanish persons were REALLY low. How much divisions can you transport yrhough a voyage of months?
3- Massive executions. Although later the Spanish slaved lot of the native population, we didn't started to make sistematic massacres (no, it wasn't that we were saints: we needed workers, we needed allies agains the Aztecs and simply we didn't gaing anything killing them).

Curious things:
1- Even though the slavery they were gratefull because they weren't going to be sacrified anymore
2- The natives that died in the hands of the Spanish wasn't in battle but in the brutal forced labour of the mines
3- The natives were assimilated by us. The proof is simply: lot more persons in South American looks (and are) descendants of natives. Look at how many how north american natives can you find in their capital...
