E3: Firaxis Announced 2nd Civ3 Expansion!

Civilizator

Few things

1) Although there are great mods, not everyone plays a mod all the time. When people ask which civ is the best, they mean un-modded ones. You can't talk about a mod in a "general discussion" forums.

2) they said that you can have perminant alliances, which implies "for scenarios" (which is very much needed)

3) they added some things like dissasters, and bombard crators (which are nice improvements. Dissasters add a whole new thing to the game; crators are like ruins, they're "nice"

4) new things might allow for new features, which means more editor stuff. (The new wonders, the new UUs, the new govs.) They might improve the editor anyway, because people like new things to play with.

5) Its News! It gives us something to speculate about. Of course, this talk will die down, until they give us something to talk about, but it's still fresh

Looking forward to the 'permament allies'. . . that can get really interesting. I wonder how complicated it will be. . .

REALLY hope they revamp the diplomacy. . . and a diplo editor would be great, too.

Less concerned about the craters, as it's pretty obvious they can do that (Ruins, anyone?). . .and the natural disasters will be back. Kinda liked those in Civ1.

They had it in Civ1?

What else did Civ2 take away? (I never played Civ1)

HEll YA!!!!!! And its coming this fall!!! SWEET!! It took so long for PTW to be released after I first heard of that and this one will be only a few months!! Sounds Great.

If they had 30 different combos, I'd love to play you in MP

Oops, you're right, I didn't do my math permutations right ;)

Which in that case they've long since over used the current combinations and further civilizations become novelties. By adding all these civs they water down the current civs. For example, who would you currently pick if you liked Militaristic and expansionist cultures, the Mongols or the Vikings? It should probably be the vikings because of their superior UU. I'd like the civs to be more balanced, because some of them are just useless. Adding more civs imbalances them further.

Civ3, was designed to be simple. They wanted to keep the feel of the classic (I hope they have the option to turn it off, not that I will)

Yes but if they wanted to keep it simple why are they now going back and adding it again? That statement contradicts itself. I don't think it was a matter of simplicity. Several times its been stated how so many things about Civ3 were left "incomplete" and only via patches and expansions were they ever added. Many (not all I admit) think Civ3 was very incomplete compared to previous versions. Making the game simple is okay because they revamped many concepts which are easier to understand now, but thats clearly not what's happening here.

Sounds more like a editor thing (set Hitler against allies)

I can't tell just by what they said if its an editor thing or not, it seems to be an assumption that its editor only. I'll reserve judgement, however until I know one way or the other.

I hope some thought is put into this (maybe have them appear at a tech and dissapear at a tech)

You hope they put some thought into this? Don't make me cry.

What would you like for modern?

I'll have to go back to civ2 and read up. The modern era is weak compared to the others thats why I bring it up. And it seems incomplete because it never goes into a future era which civ1 and 2 did. Going into the near future was something that really endeared the original civ because it was so cool to push your civ farther than the current history of man.

Check the manual. Monarchy is described as a Feudal monarchy.
A Sultanate is different

Then before I make further comment, perhaps someone better define the differences between a feudal monarchy and a sultanate? I can tell you that a lot of "sultans" in history looked a lot like Feudal monarchs, except they were islamic instead of Christian. They were supported by regional lords called "emirs", "Atabegs", "Pashas of 1/2/3/4 horsetails." A reference somewhere might help. And I checked my local encyclopedia.com but they have no specific entry on sultan :)

"Permanent alliences" obviously sounds like editor only. Alliences in real life aren't permanent.

Fair point

I can't tell just by what they said if its an editor thing or not, it seems to be an assumption that its editor only. I'll reserve judgement, however until I know one way or the other.

I think they'll add it to the editor because they need it (I think they're making a WWII scenario)

You hope they put some thought into this? Don't make me cry.

What did Civ2 have?

No idea, that's up to Firaxis.

I personally feel they are similar, but they can be differentiated.

We'll see :crazyeye:

Yay, Now I get to create actual Recreation of Scenarios :D

Hopefully, the changes in additional land forms, luxuries, and such indicate that hopefully they've unbroken more of the editor and game system.

Still, it seems like each product so far remains barely polished until a new cash cow release comes along.

As long as I can get it for $20, I won't complain too loudly...

Venger

guess they finally discovered that they should just charge us more in putting options in "expansion packs" instead of giving us in fixes (like what they sort of did when civ3 first came out) is more profitable....
i already paid too much money for the stupid pack they call play the world..i aint paying another one for another pack that gives me 8 more new civs.....i can get it for free in this forum

ok some questions which hopefully be answered soon enough.

Do we need PTW to use this expansion?

Will they put events and triggers into the editor to make it a scenario capable game like Civ2?

Will there be a patch that comes with the Expansion CD?

All in all, sounds good, hopefully everyones wishes will finally come true!

How come I feel like Firaxis is "Hurrying Production" and is desperate for $$$...

- They made PTW with stuff that should've been in a patch for Civ 3
- It wasn't a good deal (for me at least) to buy PTW with only like ... 20 new items in it
- They ain't even done patching PTW and they are already making a new Expansion
- The "Mac-ers" still dont have PTW, and they're making a new expansion (yes, probaly for PC, too)
- The Europeans said they STILL don't have their patches for PTW
- They said that there will be
"Map Features – Bombard the enemy and leave behind craters "
is it just me, or is it just another [crappy] add-on for Civ (like the ruins after a city was destoryed
- I think some1 said this:
The Civ Traits are going to be the same (6 of 'em) and with 30 combinations... the civs r just going to have same traits, ONLY different leader-heads, and UU's

===
Bottom Line:
Try 'a finish what you've done, 'fore ya start
(Try to finish what you have done, before you start [a new one])

Its the other stuff that helps

If they do have diplomacy editing, the value of this expansion rises, because scenarios that require this type of thing might be originally released for "Conquests" because it is easier to impliment

i agree with musiclaunch...

play the world should have been a patch and not a "xpansion pack" for civ3..and im guessing the new "pack" when released would have been a patch for play the world...so in all, the 2 packs they will have released should have been 2 patches for civ3.. 2 patches that costs 40 bux in total for us consumers

MusicLaunch

There are only 15 combos and they havent mentioned any new traits (edit: but they haven't denied it)

This expansion seems to have more "meat" in it, but most of it could be modded.

But, when you say patch, how many games patch in updates anymore?

Many games won't even alter artwork in a patch

some1 agrees wit me =)
===
some other stuff...

It seems like they're just using a civ-editor (Civ3Xedit) to make all the stuff in the expansion:

"Civilizations – Eight new powerful civilizations from the innovative Sumerians to the mystical Mayans. "
Blah! I BET that someone will end-up making those civs (and r probaly playing the PTW civs w/o buying it)

"...Sumerian Enkidu Warriors to quickly gain military dominance"
So you're just saying Aztez's UU, but with different graphics, rite?

"Resources – Fight for control over Tobacco, Jade & Exotic Birds"
Like with the Civs, some expert Civ Editor User can probaly make Tobacco, Jade, Birds, or even CATS, DOGS, FISH (lol)

===
Wait a minute! So someone can just use the Civ-Editor and make those AND SELL IT FOR 40+ BUCKS ?!?!?!

I would love to do that :)

About your point:

1) Many people like official civs (you wouldn't debate over "which is better: Hoplite or Numidian Merc?" without it being official)

2) Hopefully they'll improve the editor even more (something that you can't mod ;) )

Louis XXIV,

yea... hopefully they'll improve the editor

and hopefully their plan to make "Eight professionally designed adventures challenge you to recreate the great conquests of history" will be good, too...

but this time, im definity NOT going to be on the waiting list to buy it (like what i did with PTW), im going to see if it is actually worth it :)

of course they gonna improve the editor with the pack..that way u have to buy the pack if u want it..the point is, they used to improve the editor with their patches....but now they are selling it to get some money....so the pack is basically some mods, plus an "improvement" to the editor....mm...dunno bout you...but that pack sounds more like a patch to me
