Which famous leader should represent Egypt

Somehow, I expect that despite Hatshepsut leading in this poll, if she's in the game, people will say that she's in the game just to fulfill some "quota".

Anyway, the reason I chose Hatshepsut isn't because I think she's the "most accomplished" of all Ancient Egypt's leaders - I definitely don't know enough to say who is. But from what I do know, no Egyptian leader stands out to nearly the extent of Alexander or Caesar (or Augustus) in popular culture at least. So, supposing Alexander and Caesar/Augustus are in the game, I think Hatshepsut is the most interesting choice to complete that group of civs (being the group of ancient Mediterranean civs pretty much guaranteed to be in Civ VI).

I for one will be extremely disappointed if Cleopatra is the Egyptian leader in Civ VI.

I'd like the leader in each case to be the person who represents a civilization or culture the best. In many Civilizations - particularly long-lived ones, like Egypt - there isn't a clear cut choice. Given the plethora of excellent and fitting ancient Egyptian rulers, it would be a shame if Celopatra was included.

As much as Hatshepsut or Cleopatra would be cool, I'm fairly convinced that Ramses will be returning as Egypt's leader. Why? It's been described that there is one civ that is obsessed with building wonders. In history and in Civ5, this person was Ramses. Ramses' UA in Civ5 reflected this, plus we've already seen Egypt in one of the screenshots with the Pyramids and the Great Lighthouse.

There are a lot of Egyptian leaders that would fulfill this criteria though - including Hatshepsut herself. She started construction on what would eventually become the Valley of the Kings.

Akhenaten. Most interesting pharaoh for me. By inventing western monotheism and founding the jewish religion which led into both christianity and islam he had a far greater impact on world history than any other pharaoh, Cleopatra's seduction of JC changed nothing except fleetingly, there is no comparison.

Highly dubious, not least of all since Atenism was henotheistic not monotheistic. The relationship between Atenism and Abrahamic faiths has been the subject of a great deal of parlor speculation, but I don't think any expert on Egyptology or the Ancient Near East gives it any credence.

As Calyxx points out, while this does indeed describe Ramesses II very well, it's also a good description of Hatshepsut. And while the Egyptians do seem to be Civ's go-to wondermongers, there are plenty of other historical leaders who would fit that description, too.

Why are all the female Pharaohs called Queens?
Pharaoh means "great house" in Egyptian and is gender neutral.
She changed the course of history by turning the ancient world on its head.
That may be exagerrating it a bit...

Neither the Pyramids nor the Great Lighthouse were built by Ramses. If we are going by screenshots alone that probably rules out Ramses. The Pyramids were built by Pharaoh Khafra and Pharaoh Khufu while the Great Pharos Lighthouse was built over course of several Pharaohs during the Ptolemaic Dynasty.

Nefertiti and Nefertiri were Regent Queens. Hatshepsut and Cleopatra were Pharaohs

All he means is that Egypt is gonna be a civ in the game

Actually though mentioning the article reminds me that the quote specifically says "the guy who loves building wonders" which points to a male leader. I suppose it's possible Ed's using guy softly here, but to my experience in American English, guy in the singular is rarely used to refer to a female. Of course, it's possible that he's not even referring to the Egyptian leader with this.

IMO, Ramses would be first choice, although something new would be fine.
About that, what are the other choices?

- Cleopatra: bad choice, she reminds me to cause the egyptian empire to FALL!! Not too much merit to be a leader!! Score: 1.

- Hatshepsut: interesting, but not totally new (Civ4). Score: 3

- Thutmose III: best choice for me, great conquerer and builder (80% of egyptian buildings have his name on it). And brand new for CIV. Score: 5.

- Djoser: builder of the first pyramid of history (the step pyramid) and patron of the first known great engineer (Imhotep). I'd like it, but perhaps he's not known too well. Score: 4.

- Akenathon: the monotheistic pharaoh (what comes first: Judaism or the Sun Disk Cult? Nodoby can be sure, so it might have been the first monotheistic religion of history). This makes him a very peculiar choice. Score: 3.

- Nefertiti: nope, not a pharaoh.

- Nefertari: see above

At the end, my vote is for Thutmose III.

Hatshepsut would be Bananas.

Hatshepsut ruled as a Man. :crazyeye::egypt:

I won. Good

Moderator Action: Please, folks, resist the impulse to inject this sort of triumphalism into your posts. It doesn't advance the discussion, and just irritates others (and all too frequently leads to nasty replies and counter-flames, none of which is helpful to civil discourse).

Looks like it is from this preview: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/201...w/#more-369287

And apparently Egypt is not the wonder-obsessed civ - they are opportunistically militaristic. Which does suit them as well. Though going with Cleopatra, I would have thought their agenda would be making friends with civs that invade them.
