I mean it's great that the election of most powerful person in world politics has now become a fully functional soap opera.
Very reassuring.

Always has been

Starting when would we say that the US president had become "the most powerful person in world politics?" Once the US's words were backed with nuclear weapons, i.e. WWII forward?

Circa 1915, objectively

I was more focused on the soap opera part...I'd say US Presidential elections have had a whiff of the soap opera since the election of 1796

I'm sorta tempted to say 1865... but it wasn't apparent to the world until WW1. Not obviously, at least.

Economically, the US had a large, growing economy, and a skyrocketing population growth rate. Militarily, I think we'd have crushed Prussia or France if the opportunity presented... concepts the Prussians adopted to great success had already been pioneered and arguably mastered in the US Civil War. If America wasn't the most powerful nation yet, the writing was certainly on the wall.

1945 is when we became a worldwide hegemon, though, with unprecedented power and reach. Whole different level of influence.

I went with Lex's answer as to date. But now I want him (us collectively) to make good on his original claim.

What was soap-opera-esque about each of these elections?
I apologize that table didn't keep date as its own column and thus is a little difficult to read. I'll see if I can fix that.

Or they are simply following the law.

Wisconsin elections commission is made up of 3 democrats and 3 republicans. They voted 5-1 to keep Kennedy on the ballot and follow the law.

In michigan, kennedy's party already had their convention, so its too late to pick new electors. Biden dropped out before the democrat national convention and why the democrats could change who they nominated.
They are delegates not electors. Also those delegates only get votes if Kennedy wins which he says he doesn't want to run in that state. It is obviously politics at work in MI. Can you please specify which supposed law in WI removing his name would break?

Be honest, when was the last time a US president made a serious dent in world history?

I dare say Bush the second, when he ordered the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, after that it was just fiddling in the margins no ?

About time you elected a president with balls, like Kamala Harris. 😊

Kennedy himself is playing politics - being selective about what states he "wants" to run in. He wants to stay on the ballots in the non-swingy states.

8.35  Vacancies after nomination.
(1)  Any person who files nomination papers and qualifies to appear on the ballot may not decline nomination. The name of that person shall appear upon the ballot except in case of death of the person.

So if Kennedy really doesn't want to appear on the ballot, he does have an option.

Kennedy missed the deadline to get off the ballot in NM.

And this about Trump from his former chief of staff:

Former White House chief of staff John Kelly has described the former president as “a person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about.… A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law. There is nothing more that can be said.”

“God help us.”

I doubt he is willibg to commit suicide. It does seem the state law is clear unless some sort of constitutional claim can be made. I do agree RFK is trying to act strategically and if you listened to his speech he explained why. He sees Kamala as a greater danger and doesn't want to act as a spoiler who hands the election to her but he wants to remain on the ballot in the other 40 states hoping they get 5% of the vote so they can get federal matching funds in future races as a party.

So these states are helping him on his matching fund goals

Despite suspending his presidential campaign last week, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will appear on Kentucky ballots, according to Republican Secretary of State Michael Adams.

Adams said in a Monday night post on X, formerly Twitter, that Kennedy, a third-party candidate, filed to run for president in Kentucky around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

So Kennedy is getting himself on ballots after smooching the behind of the Orangatang, yet his fanbois are howling to the moon about states following their own laws to keep him on the ballot in other states.

Trump campaign and Arlington Cemetery staff clash at event

A wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery turned contentious when former President Donald Trump's campaign staff got into an "altercation" with cemetery staff over filming at the burial site for military members.
Cemetery officials publicly offered few details beyond saying "there was an incident" and a "report was filed".
The incident, first reported by NPR, occurred when a campaign staffer attempted to film in a restricted area and a cemetery employee tried to stop them.
The Trump campaign denied the allegations and said they received permission from families of fallen service members to film, though federal law prohibits political campaign activity on the grounds of military cemeteries.

Trump was at the memorial to honour the 13 US military service members who were killed during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan three years ago Monday.
An unnamed source told NPR that Trump staffers were attempting to film and photograph a section of the cemetery where the recent US casualties are buried.
Federal law restricts recording there. Trump staffers were told beforehand that they could not photograph or film that part of the grounds, cemetery officials said.
When the cemetery employee tried to stop the campaign from entering that section, campaign staff verbally abused and pushed the official aside, the unnamed source told NPR.
Defence officials told CBS, the BBC's US news partner, that some Trump campaign staff were unprofessional and both verbally and physically aggressive towards the cemetery official.
Trump's campaign has denied NPR's version of the story.
Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesperson, disputed that there was a physical altercation and said the campaign is prepared to release video to confirm their account.
"The fact is that a private photographer was permitted on the premises and for whatever reason an unnamed individual, clearly suffering from a mental health episode, decided to physically block members of President Trump's team during a very solemn ceremony," he said in a statement.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a statement from family members of the fallen soldiers honoured at the event, expressing their approval.
“We had given our approval for President Trump’s official videographer and photographer to attend the event, ensuring these sacred moments of remembrance were respectfully captured and so we can cherish these memories forever,” the families said in Trump's Truth Social post.
But that goes against federal policy, an Arlington National Cemetery spokesperson told the BBC.
Federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities on the grounds of military cemeteries, including photographers, content creators or anyone directly supporting a partisan political candidate's campaign, the cemetery spokesperson said.

Trump's enablers and supporters cannot stop lying and making fake news to support him. MAGA people are right there with Trump as being among the worst people in world.

‘My identity is stolen’: Photos of European influencers used to push pro-Trump propaganda on fake X accounts

Trier, GermanyCNN —
Luna, a self-described 32-year-old “MAGA Trump supporter” from the battleground state of Wisconsin, has gained a huge following since she joined X, formerly Twitter, in March. Her timeline has become a digital bullhorn for the “Make America Great Again” movement, praising former President Donald Trump’s re-election bid, promoting conspiracy theories about his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, and touting Republican talking points to nearly 30,000 followers, who she addresses as “patriots.”

“Would You Support Trump Being The President forever? I wonder if you all support Trump for president just like me,” @Luna_2K24 posted on July 29, sharing a beach selfie in a white bikini and asking her followers to respond with an American flag emoji if they agreed. The post was viewed by around 54,000 people.

But Luna isn’t real. The photos of the smiling brunette posted periodically on @Luna_2K24’s timeline are of Debbie Nederlof, a German fashion influencer who lives across the Atlantic and won’t be voting in the US presidential election in November. When CNN reached out to the 32-year-old, a trained optician and single mother who is working two jobs – as a social media manager at an engineering firm and as a model to raise money for her child – she was angry and frustrated that her face was being used to push pro-Trump propaganda on X.

“To be honest, ‘what the f**k?’ was my reaction. That was my reaction, because I have nothing to do with the United States. With Trump, the political things over there. What the hell do I – from a small place in Germany – care about US politics?” she said.

Nederlof is one of 17 real European women — fashion and beauty influencers from the Netherlands, Denmark and as far away as Russia — whose online photos have been stolen by unknown actors to promote Trump and his pick as running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, on X, a CNN investigation in collaboration with the Centre for Information Resilience (CIR) has found. CIR is an independent, non-profit social enterprise which describes itself as dedicated to exposing human rights abuses. It receives funding for individual projects from governments, NGOs and individuals.

The fake accounts are among 56 profiles on X identified by CNN and CIR, using a mixture of digital sleuthing and reverse image search tools, as appearing to be part of a coordinated campaign backing the Trump-Vance ticket ahead of the 2024 presidential election. There’s no indication that the Trump campaign is involved.

While Trump posts fake support from Taylor Swift...

'Swifties for Kamala' think Harris is the 1 to beat Trump. And they want to help

AUGUST 28, 2024

Decked out in their friendship bracelets and ready with a long list of song-related puns, Taylor Swift fans came together Tuesday night. But they weren’t there for a concert. They were there to organize.

“Welcome to the Swifties for Kamala kickoff call. It's been waiting for you,” Irene Kim, the executive director and co-founder of the group, said with a smile.

The grassroots organization, which is affiliated neither with Swift nor the Harris campaign – launched hours after President Biden ended his presidential bid and Vice President Harris took over the ticket, is focused on mobilizing Swift fans to get out the vote for Democrats this fall. It’s the latest in a growing list of coalitions taking action for Harris, including ‘White Dudes for Harris,’ which reported having nearly 200,000 attendees and raising more than $4 million.

Swifties for Harris held its first organizing call on Zoom Tuesday night and featured appearances from a handful of progressive political leaders – including Massachusetts Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, along with an appearance from musician and long-time Swift friend Carole King.

After the call ended, the group reported raising more than $122,000 for Harris’ campaign, growing to nearly $150,000 by Wednesday.

https://twitter.com/Swifties4Kamala/status/1828607576382296208

The gathering of more than 34,000 was another glimpse into the organic enthusiasm that Harris has benefited from in the past month since announcing, and while the Swift fan base spans generations, it’s another potentially promising sign for her standing with the youth vote – a critical voting bloc for Democrats this fall.

While Swift backed Biden four years ago, she has yet to publicly endorse in the presidential race. Still, her ability to rally her fans to political causes is unquestioned: In 2018, when she endorsed two Democratic congressional candidates in her home state of Tennessee, the voter group Vote.org reported 65,000 new voter registrations in 24 hours.

Among voters under 30 – who played a critical role in Biden’s win four years ago, Swift is a powerful symbol. She’s massively celebrated among many of this target generation, who have known the country-turned-pop star for most of their lives. Swift’s debut album – which was released in the fall of 2006 – is nearly the same age as an 18-year-old eligible voter today.

The group’s co-founders, Kim, 29, and Emerald Medrano, 22, addressed the thousands of attendees while sporting the number 47 written on their hands – a nod to Harris and Swift, who does the same with her lucky number 13.
“It was my wish that me and this beautiful movement could help Kamala [Harris] win this election and become our first woman president and the 47th President of the United States,” said Medrano.

“Because things will change, and we have the power to do it through the way we bead our friendship bracelets red, white and blue and decorate our debate parties as if they were album [release] parties,” he added. “The way we show others how voting should be celebrated and not tolerated.”

Each speaker shared a collective pitch: attendees need to turn their love story for Swift into momentum for Harris and Democrats down the ballot. King, who has long supported Democratic candidates, shared her personal experience canvassing for candidates. “Don't be afraid because there is nothing to lose and everything to gain … The key is listening,” she said. “Don’t be afraid. There is too much at stake.”

Many politicians on the call took their Swift-related mentions seriously. In his speech, Markey delivered more of a call to action and took jabs at former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump – someone Swift has criticized in the past. “There are just five fortnights until Election Day, but we are not out of the woods yet,” he said, “We have our work ahead of us to make sure we defeat this antihero wannabe, or as I like to call him, ‘Mr. Casually Cruel, Mr. Everything Revolves Around You.’”

“In the words of Taylor Swift, ‘I never trust a narcissist,’” Markey added. “And this narcissist in chief clearly doesn't know enough about karma or what I like to call the infinite organizing power of the Swifties on this Zoom call.”

The senior Senator from Massachusetts is no stranger to Swift-lyric-easter eggs. After he staved off a primary challenge from former Massachusetts Rep. Joe Kennedy III, supporters of the senator repeatedly referenced the Swift song, “the last great american dynasty,” poking fun at Kennedy, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

https://x.com/Students4Markey/status/1286706208003555329

Though the speakers on the call tried to weave light-hearted pop culture references into their remarks, the group’s organizers made a point to stress the legitimacy and seriousness of their work.

“I think one thing that maybe the media doesn't always get right is that Swifties are just about making little posts and little bracelets. And we do do those things for sure, but I think you can see with the intentionality of this call that we really have had a lot of thought in making sure everyone is included,” said Annie Wu, the group’s political director. “We are providing opportunities, and we are really giving the resources for people to be involved and civically engage this cycle. ”

The call also had an immediate ask of its participants: Register to vote. By the end of the call, 14,000 reported registering.

The group also put out an ask with a coveted reward: Attendees who get people in their community to check their voter registration get entered into a contest to win tickets to a Swift concert. Entries increase in value if the person they reach is a low-frequency voter, unregistered or lives in a swing state.

The group plans to have additional organizing events as the election continues since there are indeed only five fortnights left.

So Kennedy is getting himself on ballots after smooching the behind of the Orangatang, yet his fanbois are howling to the moon about states following their own laws to keep him on the ballot in other states.

On the plus side WI courts rejected the Democrats attempts to remove both Cornel West and Jill Stein from the ballot in WI. I am not sure what the other swing states like MI have done. Isn't it a little suspicious that Democrats want to force all the far left independents off the ballot but sue to keep RFK on? It seems pretty obvious what a dirty game the Dems are playing.

Stein and West take voters from Kamala so Dems want them barred from ballot access while RFK took from Trump so they want to find excuses for him to be forced to stay on the ballot. These are not the actions of people who care about Democracy.

It's a game both sides are playing. I'm sure the Democrats don't care enough about democracy enough to order their followers to storm the Capitol though.

If you are interested in just facts without any political spin this is a great documentary time lining events of J6. Just about everyone will find they have been mislead so it is good to review just the facts. It is well worth watching.

Now, what the DNC did do was rig the last three presidential primaries and in 2005 it even took a case to the Supreme Court arguing that it had a right to cheat and rig as it was supposedly a private organization so little things like Democratic votes don't apply to it. Shockingly, shockingly the Supreme Court agreed with the DNC. That is why Democrats have things like Super Electors who can override what primary voters voted for while Republicans do not. Even forgetting how no one voted for Kamala Democrats are clearly not the party of Democracy.

Oh, and they also backed many, many riots far worse than J6. Lastly, your previous post claimed Democrats were just following the law (while also not following the law for West or Stein) but now you defend it saying both sides do it. Which is it?

I think it would be fair to say that both sides have their unique view of American democracy and both sides view themselves as the only rightful heirs. If a rebellion were to rise up after the election, whichever side is where, the rebels would cast themselves as acting to restore the country, union, democracy or whatever buzzword you might want to choose.

The problem that both sides have is each other. Remove a reasonable (>1%<) slice of the opposition and that would be okay. We could live with the same policies. We just can't live with "those" people enacting them.

Sad state of affairs. Bad blood builds up. Calls in mind a life quote.

That's all right. These things gotta happen every five years or so, ten years. Helps to get rid of the bad blood.
