Europe and the post-human society...

I guess the problem with Europe's low birthrate is because the strain on welfare systems when there are not enough young people to pay for the elderly.
I would humbly submit that that is a problem, but hardly the problem.

A world without children, even if you manage to solve the problem of aging, is a depressing world indeed.

There are and will still be children. Just not as many in proportion to adults and grannies.

After reading that article, post-human must be describing these acts as being inhuman, because they are.
Having no children is inhuman? Is that what you meant?

hmmp, master race indeed.

Well, given my very limited experience with German women. They're pretty, and pretty damn frigid.

Good riddance I say, more room for British, Dutch, and French women.

Don't generalize to soon for Europe. Not all countries are doomed yet. Look at France demography: we are doing quite good.

I have a suggestion: every one knows German is an harsh language, better suited for warfare than for love. So I suggest German be banned in Europe.
We should make French, a language particularily suited for romance and love, the official language of Europe.
It would help the seduction process, and will increase the building of new love relationships, and it will lead to more baby.

Frankly, as a woman, wouldn't you be more likely to have a baby with a man who speak about Romance in French, or with a man who speaks this horrible German language?

It's also possible some German couples are deterred to have children, because thinking about the horrific process of teaching them German grammar and declination is so dreadful they prefer to avoid children completly.

No German of decent upbringing would be inconsiderate enough to talk to a romantic interest. The traditional seduction procedure is to hit the person in question over the head with a club and drag him or her home. This is were the sophistication comes in: A one night stand is generally dragged by the hair. In order to express a more serious interest, drag by the feet. And if it is marriage, what you are after, carry the person over your shoulder.

In the name of science, i am willing to give French a chance. But frankly, i doubt it can express emotions as well as a hand-carved club.

sounds like a plan, please send your women over to teach us about the finer points of the french language

oh wait, I forgot, you already are doing that :mischief:

I don't think things are so far gone that Europe can't recover, but I'm not sure that European politicians have the willpower to do all the unpopular things that would help turn things around.
care telling us what these unpopular measures would be that would save old europe?

The funny thing about crummy European birth-rates is that they are at their crummiest in the most traditionalistic, religious (around the Med), family-value (Germany) oriented countries.

The more modernistic, secular, gay-rights, no-marriage countries are doing markedly better (Scandinavia, France etc.)

On balance, what seems to work is using the state to provide child-care to allow women to work, have children, but not have to accept being confined to the role of traditional home-making mother and wife.

It's the countries where it's been assumed for too long that their women will keep been obliging who are really suffering here. The countries that freed up the female workforce in the 60's already, by offering subsidies, child-care etc. are doing at least OK by comparison. France is booming.

Till, can I please quote this line in my sig.

true that, at the same time, former east-bloc countries (czech rep, poland, the baltic countries) see to have even lover fertility rates than the west. It really seem like the most liberal european countries (you can add Benelux to your list) seem to maintain the highest birthrates in europe :)

there was an intersting article about that in the NZZ a while back (in german, of course). it basically debunked the old myth (at least here in switzerland) that getting women into the economy helps the economy at the cost of fertility rates, from a OECD study the opposite seems to be the case: countries with high proportion of women working in paid jobs have higher fertility rates.

Europe's favorite American, Mark Steyn, is at it again. From his blog...Now I confess, I find some of Europe's more extreme fertility rates a tad disturbing...(I mean, doesn't anyone MISS kids?) but I can't help but feel that Mark is overplaying his hand here. A 'post-human society?' What does that even mean?

Look carefuly, it is exactly what is going to happen in America too.

In almost all modern, industrialized nations, the fertility rate has fallen dramatically: Japan for example has the lowest fertility rate.

Unless we find a way how to make human productive lives longer, our population will stagnate, get older and slowly decrease. It's natural.

Nobody is doomed. All these predictions are useless in the long term.

Former East Bloc countries have gone through brutal economic transformation from planned to market economy during the 90's. You know, a period of insecurity when you don't know if you will have a job or home, isn't exactly good for raising children.

Anyway, Czech rep.'s population is going up, due to immigration and now positive natural increase.

Charles V: "I speak Spanish to God, Italian to women, French to men, and German to my horse"

It seems that ole Charlie thinks Italian is the true language of love. German on the other hand, appeals to horses. Ouch!

He was gay. So for him French was the language of love.

...and German for the love that dare not speak it's name ;)
