Fantasy Unit Conversions from Kohan II

I could use the Golshan and Ifrit, got an idea for a civ floating around in my head, and these models could let me make it :) Great work on the models, they look amazing :) If you don't mind, can you look and see whether there are some more models with a magical/arcane theme that could be converted easily?

I just added a Colubra unit to my modmod using the Maar Nasai graphics. It looks fine in the game except that the sword is pink. A bigger problem though is that its pedia won't show up, and neither will any unit commands. I can use arrow keys o get it to move, but can't tell it to fortify, cast any spells, take any promotions, etc.

Edit: Actually, the commands from the previous unit show up and work for it.

I believe that when I've seen this kind of thing before it was a kfm problem.

Also, would you mind including Buttons for the units?

Thanks. I've uploaded an amended version to the database to fix these issues.
1) The sword had the wrong texture path which is why it was pink.
2) The pedia thing was because the kfm file refers to maar.nif - so I renamed the file to maar.nif.

I'd rather spend my time doing the 3D unit work- there are plenty of artists around capable of making buttons.

I would also second Psychic_Llama's request, and could you look for some magical models please? I'm not really fussy, just some magical units :) And, if you posted some more screenshots of more possible units in Kohan II, I bet you could find somebody interested in converting them as well :D

Since there are quite a lot of units available, I have uploaded the original NIF files for all the Kohan II units here. Anyone with NifSkope can then take a look through and see which other units they are particularly interested in. As I've mentioned before there are some units that could work well with a more high resolution texture.

Deliverator, are there any pixie/faerie type units that you could convert? a basic small flying female humanoid would help significantly with the Warhammer mod (with some retexturing of course)

I think the Golshan is the closest unit to a faerie that I've seen. She is a flying female humanoid but she doesn't have any wings. To make the wings would be easy, but they'd need to be animated.

I downloaded Kohan pack and intended to make a screenshot of the units, so it would be more easier for us to choose which units we want. But while looking at the nifs, I realize that if I did make a screenshot, it would be harder for you, because I am sure that we will want all of these beauties converted

Please make the Storm Drake next. There is only one dragon unit out now - he is very good, but only one is a little bit embarrassing.
Your Storm Drake will create a golden age for many fantasy mods, i am sure:)

I couldn't look at the files in the pack; so if there's anything else looking like the Jotun or like a dryad, I'd be happy to see it converted :)

I'm going through those nifs at the moment... Honestly, the vast majority are rather bad, compared to units produced by people like SeZereth.

I'd say just port those that would have useful animations, or actually look good. Some of the ones I've noticed:

  • Archer variant of the Maar Nasai - Just gives it more versatility, IMO
  • Gauri Leader - I know you have it in your list already, but it would go great with the Dwarven Hornguard already in FfH.
  • Maelstrom - A ballista with glowing purple crystals.... I think we can use it. :p
  • Haroun Hillstrider - A new type of treant would not be a bad thing.
  • Haround Stormdancer - I don't particularly care about the rider, I just want me a chocobo.
  • Human Catapult - Very nice looking siege weapon, which we really don't have too many of.
  • Fire Dragon - Not a dragon, but a fire lizard... Still a good one
  • The 'Tech' Constructs - An elementalist civ could use these, I think. Standard, Gold, Iron, Metal, Stone, Wood... Almost have the chinese elements.
  • Tech Mystic - Interesting lizardman
  • Really, the whole Undead civ - This is the only place where the generic units actually look good.
And of course, the others in your image.

Edit: Maybe also some of the animals... The birds would be awesome, seeing as they should actually flap their wings. The deer type units could be useful too....

That is exactly what I was saying. Too much units to convert. And those units that "not attractive enough" were "not attractive enough" only because seZ already made something better. If only seZ *hadn't* made his units, we'll be drooling over those "not attractive enough" :D

In that pack you posted, is that all what is needed to convert them? If it is, please post a tutorialso we can all convert the ones we want? And, thanks :)

Please make the Storm Drake next.

I've already started on it. I would like to make one of the strike animations a ice/fire/poison/whatever breath animation since the Storm Drake's Cast animation looks like it can be adapted - we'll see how that works out.

Another idea I had: once the Storm Drake animations are done I could try rigging the existing FFH2 dragons to this armature - a flying dragon that rains down fire from above could be pretty cool... :)

In general, the possibilities of adapting these units and/or combining them with some of the existing FFH2 content could be quite exciting.

The Tech constructs are just reskins of the same unit which is a bit boring. If I wanted to make a varied set of elementals I would probably use the Ifrit for Fire, the Trow for Earth, the Jotun for Ice, and the Construct for Iron/Gold. Making a bluish, translucent version of Golshan with some nice additional effect could make a good Air elemental.

Yeah, I quite like the Snow Elks and the Snow Owl could be good also.

I've been thinking the same thing. The number of units that people want means that a collaborative approach would help get them done quicker. The conversion process is quite complex, but if I take a relatively simple unit and walk through the steps then other people should be able to follow it. A tutorial could also help with getting more people familiar with animating with Blender, editing existing animations, etc.

The first stage in my process does involve 'cleaning' the unit meshes and animations using 3DS Max 7 - but I can do this and post the cleansed files for those that don't have Max.

After I've converted the Storm Drake - I will pick a nice simple (non-flying) unit and post a detailed tutorial as I work through the conversion.

Yey! :D Yeah, a tutorial would be amazing, as long as people make sure to post after converting, and to make sure that they aren't converting the same unit as somebody else. With a community effort, we should be able to convert these relatively quick :D Oh, if you convert the Tech Constructs, would you just need to convert one and use the dds from the others? Because, looking at the nifs, they are exactly the same, just a different skin.

Yes, that's right. You'd just need to change the texture in NifSkope to use the Iron/Gold/Whatever texture instead of the basic one.
