In a bill proposed by Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika, citizens who repeatedly pass gas in public could be punished as criminals, according to The Daily Mail.

The bill is intended to make citizens "responsible and disciplined."

Mutharika's bill contains other bizarre offenses, such as "insulting the modesty of a woman, challenging to fight a duel, and...pretending to be a fortune teller."

I wonder how the intend to enforce this, will passing gas in public restrooms be illegal (how many public restrooms are even in Malawi)?

Silent but deadly.

This also just in: consumption of beans and cheese now completely banned in Malawi.

/lamerudejoke.

I'd eat all the beans and garlic I could find.

"insulting the modesty of a woman, challenging to fight a duel, and...pretending to be a fortune teller"

This sounds like some guy just got extremely drunk at a presidential party, did all these things and pissed off the president enough for him to make it unlawful:lol:

Does Malawi have any redeeming qualities at all? I mean seriously WTH.

...wow. Authoritarianism gets stupider every day.

Hope they enjoy the spiked incarceration costs.

Also, most people refrain from farting in public anyway, so what's the problem? No need for legal regulation if social regulation already does the job...

Have you guys never been trapped in an escalator with lots of other people?

I think you mean elevator. ;)

And shame on them for not holding it! ...even if it is tempting. :mischief:

I'm going to re-enact that old "God's Smuggler" comic cover...

Only smuggling prunes and beans into Malawi instead of bibles!

:D

... I'm not sure making it illegal to challange someone to a duel is a Bad Thing. It wouldn't surprise me if it's still on the statute books in some Western countries. It was illegal for pubs not to have hitching posts for horses into the early 90s in New Zealand.

He who suppressed it, expressed it.

They are clearly stupid. They should tax it, not ban it ;)
