The scene from Cabaret where all the beer garden starts singing Tomorrow Belongs to Me is very powerful.

This may be apocryphal, but I've heard that this song seemed so authentic, people wondered if it was a genuine National Socialist song from the '20s-'30s. Nope, it was written by the composers specifically for the play, just like the rest of the songs (and the composers were both Jewish, to boot).

I agree with you about musicals, though. I don't usually think of them as having "soundtracks", because the music itself is part of the movie. I think the albums usually do say 'soundtrack' right on them, though. (Image, not a spoiler.)

Yeah. Philip Glass wasn't particularly impressed when he saw the finished film, though. I think it's great; one of the finest urban/folk horror films I've seen. Glass' score gives it an almost hypnotic quality when used.

Interesting question for which the answer isn't a simple one. For 30 years I've thought that my favourite is the '92 version of The Last of the Mohicans but since I haven't seen that in 25 years so I may not even like it anymore.
On the other hand I'd like to separate soundtracks made for a movie from collection of existing songs used in a movie. For latter Atomic Blonde starts with Blue Monday so it's unbeatable.

A great soundtrack from its era - could only find a playlist so you'd need to search for it:

Some great original Seattle grunge, plus one of Smashing Pumpkins' great songs "Drown".

Ah..here is a good one and a good movie:

I point out this one particular piece by John Murphy, who also scored Sunshine. It's used in the great scene in "Kickass" where Big Daddy goes off on a bunch of bad guys, but I'm certain it was used in "Sunshine" as well and "28 Days Later". Here it is called "Big Daddy Kills" but the actual title is "In the House, In a Heartbeat":

"Kickass" had both a soundtrack and a score.

I love this movie no matter what anyone says, but the soundtrack is undeniably great. This piece in particular when MM leaves his daughter in order to save mankind:
