This may be apocryphal, but I've heard that this song seemed so authentic, people wondered if it was a genuine National Socialist song from the '20s-'30s. Nope, it was written by the composers specifically for the play, just like the rest of the songs (and the composers were both Jewish, to boot).The scene from Cabaret where all the beer garden starts singing Tomorrow Belongs to Me is very powerful.
I agree with you about musicals, though. I don't usually think of them as having "soundtracks", because the music itself is part of the movie. I think the albums usually do say 'soundtrack' right on them, though. (Image, not a spoiler.)
