Foreign Policy: RealmsBeyond

I can take over as RB diplomat no problem. I am just busy enough in real life myself that I can stall if need be, but I think I have a pretty good read on Scooter and can keep him strung along as long as possible.

Explosive toys, classic  That's a pretty lame threat, and he neutralizes it himself when he admits that their NAPs are running out with all their neighbors at the same time.

I think a good strategy here would be to say that we're concerned about their big lead, and say we need more information about their t175 plans before we can commit to anything. Who would they go after if they get the NAP, how do we fit in, what's in it for us, etc. Be honest that we don't want to make their game easier if it doesn't benefit us, so we need to know what they have to offer us in exchange for a NAP.

Then reject all their offers, of course. :p

I like it. We might get some valuable intel in this case.

Since there were no serious objections to me covering for Caledorn, I just sent this to Scooter's personal email, subject line "New (temporary) ISDG diplomat"

Hi Scooter!

Caledorn hasn't been able to participate in the ISDG too much recently, so he asked if I could help out with diplo duties. If you need any quick communication, feel free to hit me up on GTalk (or I guess it's "hangouts" now?). I also have Skype if you prefer that: victor.hinderliter.

LOL, I love the timing of our arming. RB throws unveiled threat to us and we draft/whip 10 units the very same turn hahahahh... that is just hilarious. They joined the game some 5-10 minutes after I started hurrying our army builds. To strenghten even more their suspicions/fears I ended turn without giving them time to take demographics shots.

Now they will start growing and feeding their own fears. "What CFC are up to?", "Are those guys arming to backstab us?", "Who they are gonna attack?", "Can we safely send our army west when CFC are arming for war at our east?". Good, good, let the dark side of the paranoia flow trough you...

All is good in our empire, of course with having in mind we are preparing for war. Our GNP dropped like a bomb. From 220+ we are down to 170 something gpt, but this was to be expected. Happiness is well under control except in capitol, where we have 2 unhappy and 3 turns to barracks. We are starving there, so we will need to get back the wheat from Terasvin. Notre Dame is anyway ready in 6-7 turns, which is good.

I re-offered the deal to French - gems for wines+2gpt and map for map. Bistrita offered it once, but most probably it went lost during the reloads.

I offered Poly 40 gold and my apologies. This is paying back the 20 gold we were owing them + additional 20 gold for them to use for the duration of the time we were slow to re-pay them their 20 gold. It was 10 turns initially, not as stated in State of the Empire thread 20 turns and we did not payed even after the 20 turns ran out. We need to figure which turn this deal started so we know when we have our 20 gold back.

I drafted only 3 times in our most west cities. The eastern ones we can draft later when we are about to invade to not lose the citizens working tiles. Same can apply to whips I think, but this must be calculated to not slow our invade date.

With the current units build up we added 1/3 more power to our existing power in a single turn.

Our spies are watching the zulu territory.

So far, so good.

Can I suggest we declare on Spain now, before RB can sign a DP with them? Between them Spain and RB may well have current NAPs with all other teams such that we can't persuade someone else to declare on Spain to eradicate any DP that RB sign with them.

(And really, it's going to be bloomin' obvious to Spain that we're coming for them now)

We must check the situation, but I doubt RB have the tech needed to sign in-game DPs

It requires Military Traditions, which no one still have. We must check though if RB have the prerequisting technologies just to be sure.

they need music and nat (for anyone checking), nat we know they have... music is questionable since they weren't the ones that got the free GA

 That's excellent 2metraninja. Thanks for the chuckle this morning!

RB does sound scared. Let's keep them on their toes. Let's have them think that maybe we're waiting to swoop down on them the instant they DOW the Germans, so they keep at least some forces away from their real front. Hopefully replacing kind, trustworthy Caledorn from the diplo position and putting in an unknown (me) in his position just helps to increase their anxiety.

Then again, they probably have spies crawling through our lands observing all our new units moving towards the Spanish front. At least they aren't allowed to spend any EP's against us before our NAP expires. Hopefully this doesn't backfire on us!

I like Yossa's approach. Let's be honest and frank. We'll state our concerns and ask them upfront who they plan to attack and what's in it for us.

The disadvantage of keeping them scared is that they would prepare even better for the war with us. If they cannot sign DP with Spaniards - and warning Spaniards would not complicate our plans much - what about simply telling RB we are arming for Spaniards now? I know, there is not much fun in it, but might be more practical. I am not sure we want to keep RB on their toes - or rather, I think we do not want to scare them more than necessary. Obviously, we cannot extend NAP, but we can tell them honestly that we are preparing for the war with Spaniards now.

Yes, something along the lines of

is good.

If we can bluff them to think we would backstab them, it would mess their micro. If they start building the defence now when they don't need it for 25 or so turns, it'll cost them hammers and money they could have used much more efficiently. They anyway have more than plenty of time to prepare for the attack they know is coming. When we don't agree to extend NAP beyond turn 175 they'll know that the attack is coming. I would actually like to see if RB panics and reacts to our military buildup before we send the message based on Yossa's ideas.

I don't think they are scared or even confused or uncertain about what is going on. What I think Scooter's "direct question" was about, was to get us to respond to their NAP request by either a refusal to answer or an excuse not to answer (which is obviously how they will interpret Cal's statements).

Now that we have satisfied that, I think they will interpret the message loud and clear that we intend to attack after the NAP is over. So they know that whatever they are going to do against Germans, they must do it before the NAP ends, to get their troops back home and ready to fight us.

I doubt it is possible to convince them that we won't be attacking them right when the NAP ends and even if we could convince them, I am not sure what benefit this will be to us. Surely they will be prepared for attack when their NAPs expire.

Maybe we can go with a blanket statement like:
We are aware that some of your NAPs, as well as some of ours, and many other Teams' NAPs with each other, are all expiring around the same time. To borrow from GRRM, we think that this potential "chaos is a ladder of opportunity" for us and we prefer to let as many NAPs as possible expire in order to leverage the uncertainty into the best possible situation for our team. To illustrate, our current extended NAP with you has necessitated that we give up numerous potential agreements that would have been much more lucrative.

So this time we want to take some time to see what new offers and opportunities will reveal themselves as the expiration of these many NAPs draws closer and then expire. We are confident that there will be much better offers on the table form many Teams, when the NAPs are at or near expiration. We welcome your thoughts on this.
This way, they will potentially be torn between trying to soften their lead (and thus the target on their back), beefing up their military to prepare for a fight, balancing offense/defense to prepare to invade Germany while being ready to withstand us (and whoever else is coming for them) and tempering their military buildup, so as not to seem like too much of a threat (which may discourage a NAP extension and encouraging a dogpile).

If we can bluff them to think we would backstab them, it would mess their micro.
Absolutely agree with Aivo.

I would actually like to see if RB panics and reacts to our military buildup before we send the message based on Yossa's ideas.

This is my thinking too.

What I think Scooter's "direct question" was about, was to get us to respond to their NAP request by either a refusal to answer or an excuse not to answer (which is obviously how they will interpret Cal's statements).
This is correct too.
