Fox06 -- Need For Speed

Ferris Beuler, I think. "She's so uptight, you could stick a lump of coal up her *** and, two weeks later, you'd have a diamond."

It is Ferris Bueller with Matthew Broderick, not Michael J. Fox, but he's talking about Cameron ("Pardon my french, but Cameron is so uptight ...")

However, I'm sure it has appeared elsewhere before and after-hand.

The More You Know(tm)

Ok so here we go..

1. First check activate “Play Random number of turns generator” just to Irritate our mighty Leader.
2. Reread variant rules just to see if I can manage a turn set without breaking them or finding a hole in them. As usual looks good but see later

Plan.
  1. Build Chariots
  2. Found a second city
  3. Explore.
Now not even I should be able to mess that up!!

As usual the turn set kicks off with our normal standard complement form the civ gods

1hopeless.jpg

2410 Meet Cyrus scout who is greeted by the sharp end of a chariot. Poor Cyrus he is woodsmen II (guess he popped experience from a hut) but is out in the Open.
1cyrus.jpg

2290 Meet Monty who always looks like he has been sampling to much "Columbian Marching Powder" to me anyway.
1monty.jpg

2260 Now an exploring Chariot finds a hut to our SW which we pop and yes we get a Warrior.
1warrior.jpg

Enter head scratching mode. Realize if our mighty leader hadn’t changed our rules..

Need for speed simply means one rule: only units with 2 or more movement points can end their turns outside the city

We would be fine as he wouldn’t have left a city but how can I get him back into a city this turn. Now spot a way to resolve my dilemma as there is a Lion nearby and hopefully he will eat the Warrior and all will be forgiven. But no he wanders off and I hear faintly on the wind.

“You are on your own for this one mate you puzzle it out – but don’t worry Greyfox will pick holes in whatever you choose!!” So decide to march him back into our city where Greyfox can delete him if he wishes.

Another Chariot finds a nice looking spot for the settler I shall whip in soon and in the ‘Find the most obscure “need for speed” reference competition” I decide shall be called Miramar.

1miramar.jpg

Now you would think I have learned my lesson but I decide to cross fingers and pop another hut on our Eastern peninsula and Lo the RNG decides Greyfox couldn’t stand me popping another warrior and gives us a tech instead.

1mysticis.jpg

2110 Meet Rameses in the west - Asoka also turns up but he must have been a fair way further W as I never find his borders.

1960 Whip in settler for 2 pop and march off to found Miramar

1840 Horse Riding comes in and really can’t work out what to research but decide with our Whiptastic cities we need Granaries so go down the Fishing Pottery route.

So EOT

We have some pretty experienced chariots from Caning AI Warriors and Scouts
To the E we have

To the NNW

And to the W

2nd city founded and we are doing OK

You'll note that I asked the 'what happens if we pop a unit from a hut?' question back on Page One, but our fearless leader felt it beneath him to answer :backstab:

Wow, Beijing is a lot further than I would have thought. How did Qin get a warrior down to us as fast as he did? Either way, the AI is tightly packed there on our west. That looks like some good hunting ground to me.

Prince level, so AI get an extra starting unit.

@ChrTh: yeah, you and your bad mouth. If you'd never suggested it, it will never happen!!!! :gripe:

Seriously though, I almost never pop huts with anything other than scouts, so if the RNG roll is give a unit, it's always a scout. So I thought no problem there. Anyway, heading the warrior to the nearest city seems the right thing to do.

We need to keep the troops pumping .... and attack somebody to gain experience. We are Imperialistic, so our generals should appear soon. We need those generals to get ourselves some 2-footed warlords

Mirarma ... don't recall a title of NFS with that name. Googling shows me the "Miramar Speed Circuit, San Diego’s favorite indoor kart-racing spot" ... an indoor kart-racing?!?!

RE: the siege exception, I am gonna suspend the exception temporarily ... and see how we do without the advantage of non-warlord siege.

Miramar Naval Air Station - home of the "Top Gun" School. I may change the name to Daytona, or Watkins Glen.

Got it for tonight - breed horses, suppress enemy activity.

Screw those pansy-a$$ tracks. If you're going to name it after a NASCAR, use a track from the heart of NASCAR. Just not Lowes. Screw Lowes.
How about North Wilkesboro or Rockingham, kind of an "in memory of" honor. (Damn Frances).
:gripe:

(looks nervously over at the local militia ... they nod)

Bede, do you have a connection with San Diego or the Navy? I grew up in San Diego, but I didn't think many outside the area knew the real name of Top Gun.

@Fox suspending our seige capability will make it tough. We'll have three options. 1) Kill everybody before they can get longbows and a cultural defense. 2) Throw tens of units at each city, expecting 90% casualties. 3) Wait until tanks.

One seems unlikely. Two seems practical. Three seems boring for three weeks, then REALLY fun for two sets.

Just another one of those things that stuck to my Velcro mind, probably from doing x-word puzzles. "7 letters, starts with Mi...ends with ...mar, "California home for high flying sharpshooters"

@Rex: As I say, I want to get a feel of how it will play out by adhering to the true spirit of Need For Speed. If it doesn't goes well, I will lift the suspension. Plus remember, we will have a lot of warlords being imperialistic. We will not go for 3 -- it betrays everything Need For Speed stands for.

My basic strategy is this: Once we get keshiks, we must start sending a pair of out to harass each Civ. Pillage their farms, mines, whatever. After at least the 3 closest Civ has a pair of keshiks oppressors, than we send a stack of 7~8 keshiks to take each Civ out. Hopefully, by then we have 1 to 2 warlords, and can attach one to a siege and another to a melee.

true old farts remember Tom Cruise before he was insane. In "Top Gun", which was set for a large part at Mirimar, one of the best lines was "I feel the need. the need for speed." or whatnot.

Sorry for spamming such a serious game. :crazyeye:

Being a card-carrying member of the old farts club myself, I remember trying to drive past the Kansas City Barbeque in San Diego (where they filmed the "sleazy bar scene" from Top Gun). This, of course, was back when Tom Cruise was the guy from Risky Business, not the completely f**king nuts Scientologist jackass that he is today. Besides, Val Kilmer was so much cooler in that movie.

(I had forgotten about that Need for Speed line, though.)

@Fox, I like your strategy about pillaging all our enemies at once, to try to keep them back in the stone age.

[ In "Top Gun", which was set for a large part at Mirimar, one of the best lines was "I feel the need. the need for speed."

Well Admiral Kutsov is the winner for the Miramar reference, confess when I originally saw the "Need for Speed" thread I thought of Top Gun not the car racing version...

Ramble Mode on

Anyway on to Strategy, I like attempting to stick to the true heart of the variant by only using Warlord Powered Turbo Charged War Engines .... We will need to store our first one until we have a catapult as they are so "crucial".

i) but think we ought to fail if the AI new what it was doing..
ii) but as the AI doesn't we may succeed...

Our chance for success comes quite a lot from them not knowing how to deal with Pillagers lurking outside the citry. (e.g Mao may well be crippled just by our chariot lurking in the North).

The take the city down with keshiks plan will let us take out say Cyrus / Mao and have a big enough empire but the kill rate of Keshiks versus Longbows could be crippling.

My "worry" is that we are compelled to go down a Liberalism - Nationalism -Military Tradition route which albeit powerful aint that much fun!!

Ramble mode off

Ah, so the mystery for Miramar is finally solved! OOT: I actually been to that barbecue bar which proudly shows the banner "Top Gun was filmed here" opposite to the Grand Hyatt ... it sucks.

While it is certainly a possibility we might need to seek cavalries eventually, I think we should be able to deal quite nicely with keshiks. Remember the Ger UB to give our keshiks more promotion (pinch or strength), and imperialistic = more warlords.

Plus we should probably be able to get some fun with Knights as well on the way from keshiks to cavalries.

We should probably focus on finding production-strong cities, and try to overrun the princes by sheer number.

Pfft, big deal. I've been to the camp where they filmed Friday the 13th. They have a giant Camp Crystal Lake sign in their trading post :backstab:

Playability by Me Note:
I have the games and installed, but I'm still working on finding time to play (I also have family coming this weekend). Go ahead and skip me this go-round, I should be ready for the next one.

Made a new enemy up in the far NW corner of the map (west of China)

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

And she provided us with a worker

Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

And a Great General

Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

Cost us a chariot as I had to kill two escorts to get them but a pretty good trade methinks.

So kind of her, but she is just a little Annoyed with us but who wouldn't be?

The first Keshik is out of the stable and pillaging Persia

Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg

The Ger will in Carbon has finished and it is now working on another Keshik while Miramar trains up a settler while it gets some more land improved. The settler could move north along the river towards China. The General awaits orders.

All the other nations have been pillaged to a fare thee well with the rolling wave of chariots.

Ramses sent a warrior to check us out, he now dead.

In the past I have used massed Keshiks effectively against towns with little or no cultural defense. It may work as well here if we let the other guys get a settler out to build a town which we then swoop down upon for a little boost to the treasury.

Keep them poor and they will be a long time getting to longbows!

And don't neglect building charioteers, they are deadly against any axes we may encounter.

Catherine is the real threat right now as she has coastal tiles to work for gold and we have no effective way to suppress those at the moment.

Woosh .... good riding, Brother Bede!

Right, we shouldn't go all Keshiks of-course. We are already pretty limited in turns of troops diversity, so let mix and match some chariots along with a diversified promotions.

We may consider a third city.

ChrTh, I read, finally his discs and game installed ... but has family commitment, so Berserks is up. I'll treat it a sa swap unless he officially ask for a skip.

 how much more official do I need to make it? Should I get a Notary Public? :crazyeye:

;)

Please skip me, I know I won't have a chance to play and I don't want to slow us down -- especially with our NEED FOR SPEED!
