Fox06 -- Need For Speed

:bump:

Just an FYI, I've started playing but I got interrupted. I should have the turns done sometime tonight.

It'll take longer though because I need to make sure I have plenty of pictures for Rex

BTW, are we thinking about keeping/building any more cities? I plan on focusing on military builds, but I was wondering if I should pop a settler.

ralph, did the blues bros mod break it?

I consider it unlikely as both Vanilla and Warlords are knackered so I suspect it is more of a Vista / Driver / something daft issue!!

Ralph

Turn 0 -- 50 AD

Goals this turn:
Eliminate Hatty Rammy
Don't kill any Generals
Pillage pillage pillage!

I send the Great General to Miramar so that he joins with that catapult, saving time on getting him out in the field.

Turn 1 -- 65 AD

Carbon: Catapult > Keshik. This Catapult gets MP Duty for now.
Miramar: Catapult > Keshik. Pachacuti is joined to this bad boy, and he's sent North to deal with Beijing.

1st Keshik Fortifies-to-Heal with an Archer nearby. Hopefully this won't be a mistake...actually, I'm sure it will be, so I move him 1 tile away and then Fortify-to-Heal.

2 of Monty's Archers threaten 3 workers. I get them out of harm's way.

I approach Elephantine. It looks vulnerable. Reallly vulnerable.

Turn 2 -- 80 AD

Attack on Elephantine. Catapult bombards (didn't have a 99% chance of succeeding. See, I listen). First Keshik attacks with ~75% odds :wallbash: dies. Second Keshik slaughters. Third Keshik finishes off the Archer left from the first attack...

fox06agv1.jpg

...and I raze it. Rammy is no more. BTW, the reason I attacked this turn was because an archer was getting ready to join the city next turn.

Archers still chasing the Workers. Hmmm, I think I'll lead them into a Trap.

Turn 3 -- 95 AD

The Rammy-decimating Crew heads towards Monty.

I kill an Archer Asoka tries to sneak by our Keshik.

Turn 4 -- 110 AD

Start bombarding Beijing. Its defense is formidable.

(Bad screenshot taken. Would've shown 6 archers)

Shanghai is looking tough too.

Turn 5 -- 125 AD

Pillage a Cow near Moscow.

Turn 6 -- 140 AD

Carbon: Keshik > Keshik. Heads towards Beijing.
C10H15N: Barracks > Ger

Turn 7 -- 155 AD

Miramar: Keshik > Keshik. Heads towards Novgorod.

:coffee:

Turn 8 -- 170 AD

Monarchy comes in. I revolt to Hereditary Rule.
I set us to Currency next, for more money. Since it'll only be researched a turn, feel free to change. I'm going to switch to Metal Casting. No, not for Forge, but for Workshops. :groucho:

Turn 9 -- 185 AD

Anarchy is over. I switch Carbon to grow again (will grow in 2 turns, probably want to focus on :hammers: again after it finishes growing).

THE TRAP IS SPRUNG!

fox06cuv6.jpg

Monty loses 2 Archers. (don't worry, the War Elephant had >99%)

Hrmmm..Metal Casting will take 26 turns at -18gpt. I still think it's the best bet, so I leave it for now. But feel free to veto.

Turn 10 -- 200 AD

:coffee:

Ok, the situation outside Beijing:

fox06dpy2.jpg

And the situation outside Tenoc:

fox06ecu2.jpg

I think we're going to need to suicide some at both places. The question is, do we risk the Great General at Beijing, or a bunch of Keshiks? It also occurred to me that I could've used the War Elephant that was keeping watch at Novgorod for the Beijing attack, but by then the TRAP WAS SPRUNG! and now he needs to heal first.

I think we should keep both Novgorod and Beijing when we take them, but obviously that's up to the player that does so.

@Ralph: ah ... yet another Vista-induced victim ... my condolences.

Well done, Chris, haven't lost too much of your touch. Beijing we may be able to keep, but not too sure abt Novgorod. We can't keep more than a few cities prior to courthouses, that's for sure.

No, we cannot afford to suicide cats. Suicide the keshiks we can do. Alternative is to leave Monty for the last, then it doesn't matter if we suicide the generals.

The prob is that Monty is #2 in score right now, and since he's farthest from us I'm concerned about leaving him unchecked. Maybe the stack should go after his smaller cities? There's a chariot keeping tabs on them, we could swap it with the stack and let the stack deal some damage.

If we're worried about courthouses, we can switch to Code of Laws. I think it would be finished before Metal Casting would be.

OK back in the loop now as problem has been solved. It looks like it was some conflict with Ruff His Mod and Custom Assets but all that cares is its working again.

So slot me in where suits...

Now if only I can convince the wife I am still sweating over Computer Problems I might get in some SE - Great Artist - Blues Brothers Malarkey to cheer me up with

Holy Christ ... how long did you take to play this, ChrTh????

:gripe:

Anyway, I pulled back the cat from Monty land to join the siege of Novgorod ... no way we can take the Aztec city without the phant. We should concentrate our firepower and get rid of Russia, China and India before paying a visit to Aztec. Speaking of Aztec, we would need sailing as well.

fox06-AD0215-aztec.jpg

I had also MM'ed Miramar a bit to have a scientists running ... so one should pop next turnset.

The thing I was worried about manifest itself ...

fox06-AD0215-barb.jpg

Fortunately, it was only a warrior. But we should probably set up some fog busting in case a barb spear really appears. I spent a good while hunting the barb, and finally caught him like an eternity later ...

fox06-AD0320-barb.jpg

The siege of Beijing continues ... and just when the culture is down to 0%, Mao made a weedy move:

fox06-AD0245-defender-out.jpg

One less defender? Thanks! I attacked.

fox06-AD0245-attack-beijing.jpg

The combat II keshiks has 62% odds ... I lost 2 keshiks but managed to take it the next turn:

fox06-AD0260-beijing.jpg

I kept the city.

Meanwhile killed a couple of stray archers ...

fox06-AD0245-kill-stray.jpg

Forces are now assembled at Shanghai:

fox06-AD0350-shanghai.jpg

and Novgorod:

fox06-AD0350-novgorod.jpg

Shanghai is a b!tch, since it is on a hill and the Chinese are protective (free garrison and first strike). So send more newly built keshiks to Shanghai.

Novgorod should be relatively easy, with the jumbo there. After novgorod, suggest pulling the forces up north to Moscow. I have been neglecting Moscow throughout my turnset. Then, we would probably sweep west from Moscow and take out Asoka, finally converging at Aztec.

I left Metal Casting as it is, since CoL require some diversion to missing requisite techs. We could use the forges. We should probably go for sailing soon in anticipation of the final clean-up operation.

I decided to go for Stonehenge so that newly captured city don't need to rush for library for cultural expansion. It will be completed as soon as next player hit enter.

Holy Christ ... how long did you take to play this, ChrTh????

:gripe:

Weekend's different. Plenty of other things to do on the weekend. During the workweek, sitting at my desk, hitting F5 every ten minutes ... I feel the NEED FOR SPEED!

Novgorod should be relatively easy, with the jumbo there.

I briefly considered going after Novgorod during my turnset; I had the Jumbo and the Keshik and at first he only had two archers. Jumbo was only 82%, and since it was a General, I couldn't risk it (or face the Woodshed!). Next turn, of course, Novgorod got a third archer, and the moment had passed.

First, I have to say that this is a Jeckle and Hyde sort of report. Half really well-played and half stinky like a diaper. I actually considered replaying my set, but decided against it. I'm a big boy and can take the abuse I'll likely receive. Sorry. Anyway, on to the game.

I'm not sure Fox pointed this out, but Monty has a spear.

aztecspear0000.JPG

All of his metals are pillaged (unless he has one on that island of his), so he must have built it while we were ignoring him. Whatever, you'll see how that guy impacts the game later. Moving on, as Fox reported, Stonehenge came in right after I hit enter.

henge0000.JPG

It still takes 15 turns to pop our borders, though. That sucks. But not as much as life sucks for Cathy.

novgorod0000.JPG

Yes, as illustrated, I kept the city. I figured that it's touching our borders, might as well keep it. Bad idea. When it came out of revolt, it's maintenance was 6.5 (ish), plus China took all of it's tiles. The only gold it can work is the one in the capital. This would have dire consequences. Alas, if that were my only weed move, I'd not feel half as bad. But that's for later, let's get back to the good parts. Moving on, we popped a Great Scientist in Mira Mar.

scientist0000.JPG

His lightbulb is set to sailing, so I naturally looked to where to put the academy.

academyincarbon0000.JPG

Mira Mar and Carbon are tied in beakers. However, I figure Carbon has the greater potential and walk Mr. Great Scientist over there. I did not build the academy, though, figuring someone would want to discuss the matter. As it stands, he is NOT fortified, and I left his move open for the IT.

Now one other important thing. As fox had suggested, I had fogbusters out. Mostly workers. Barbs don't need metal to build spears, and that could hurt us. However, this takes care of that problem rather well.

greatwall0000.JPG

(notice the message about our Keshik defeating a spear. Monty attack me and we won! Now he has no spear.) Unfortunately, but for my brilliance in building the great wall, I'd be as useless as a lesbian without a gag reflex. I had, essentially, ignored our finances all set. I saw we were deficit spending and I seem to remember it was getting low. However, I also knew I was a turn or two away from taking Moscow and Shanghai. I was completely surprised by this.

strike0000.JPG

Yikes! Here's where our finances were at the time of strike.

finance0000.JPG

I then MMed as best I could and got us to -4

mmtreasury0000.JPG

Finally, I deleted some workers (we had 16), deleted one warrior, and moved all of our fog-busters into our cultural borders. We're now at +2 with 0% science. I changed all of our mid-build units to buildings. I think we'll recover considerably when we take out Moscow and Shanghai, losing at least half our units there. Plus, we'll get a couple hundred gold for it. Hopefully, it'll be enough to research CoL. If not...

Ossh ... strike!

Novgorod should really be razed ... I intend to keep Shanghai for its high food. Good thing abt being on strike is that we can really start building some wonders instead of units.

I would have think you should be able to take Shanghai within your turns ... we really should combine our cats instead spreading them thin ... it takes like forever to pull down the defenses of a 60% city. Also, on retrospect, should have gone for accuracy promotion ... no way we are going to attack with cats except with 95% odds, so the city raiders are wasted actually.

We should probably research sailing ... at current rate, it will take us forever to get CoL, sailing has a more pressing need. One possible approach to try is to build oracle (if still available) and use it for CoL.

agree about accuracy promos. That's the problem. Shanghai has high culture and we're only hitting it for 6% per turn. Mao's got CG and first strike on all his archers. Moscow, being on a hill, is only going down at 3% per turn. yech. good thing about great wall (that I didn't know) is it increases great general production by 100%. That'll really help. Why didn't we build it sooner?

Well good to see the game swinging round to me again. I will post my thoughts on Thursday and play / report Friday as I think we are at an interesting point in the game.

Anyone else find it strange to be talking about building the Oracle in the 300's AD

Well here is the plan.

Carbon - Max Hammer formation to get Pyramids asap (34 turns I think)
Miramar - 2 scientists to actually research something & convert riverside farms to cottages for commerce.
C10H15N - 1 scientist and again convert riverside farms to cottages.
Novgorod. Hope Monty sneaks some military out and takes the city of our hands !!

Military

Although wiping out Mao by taking Shanghai is tempting as the city is on a hill it will take a lot of Keshiks so initially I propose just to leave sufficient behind to bottle him up and use our forces to Raze

Moscow - Bangalore - Delhi.

When our economy permits we should resettle next to Delhi as with Gold + Riverside cottages it can support itself pretty quickly. Additionally we need access to the sea over that side fo the map from either New Delhi or Tenochtitlan.

Research Metal Casting - Sailing - COL.
