Fox10 - The Real Thing

Looked at the save ...

hmmm, it seems Ozzy did not give us a river on our capitol :gripe: The grassland farm is giving only 3 food.

All the AI now has astronomy .... things are really getting interesting. Suggest some airships for recce purposes and (a lot) more frigates.

I see the troops are back home ... for upgrades, I presume. However, since Artillery is still 8 turns away and grenies can't upgrade to Rifleman IIRC, I suggest we use the troops to go raze a couple of the nearby green cities in the mean time.

So I suppose that my set will be:
-Build airships + frigates + ships of the line ( more of the first... they are really OP against ships now )
- Raze some Ethiopian cities
- Artilery-> Path to infantry

Agreed or not?

hmmm, it seems Ozzy did not give us a river on our capitol :gripe: The grassland farm is giving only 3 food.

I must admit I was surprised you didn't see this at the beginning. It was deliberate to see what you would do (nothing apparently). Wouldn't matter if you were on a river as the capital being on a hill doesn't grant access to water through it, you'd have had to farm the woods 1W anyway.

@Shyuhe: the idea is not to slow down ... the idea is to get the troops to do something useful while waiting for Artillery to come on line in 8 turns rather than having them sitting idly in our waters and enjoy shore leave. So, the nearest city would suffice, it's 8 turns only. Assuming 2 turns to move to the nearest city and unload, 2 turns to bombard it, 1 turn to capture it, and 2 more turns to load the troops and move back to home, its nearly 8 turns. This will also give us some razing money ... upgrading cannons to artilleries isn't cheap. Our current 900+ gold can only upgrade 4 I think.

@Ozzy: really? didn't know that city on a hill doesn't irrigates, but it make sense. Irrigating the 1W forest plains loses one specialists and one hammer while gaining us 3 food. Seems pretty equivalent.

This turnset didn't worked as I was planning.....

I started by letting the ships heal a little bit and was preparing to move to Yakob house to trash a little bit ,when our newly made airships spotted some ships....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0094.jpg

All I could do was to unload the army and prepare to engage.... the Persian fleet had more numbers than ours in the area and even our caravel was called for duty:
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0095.jpg

As we couldn't kill all the fleet ( 3 galleons ,presumably full, were still floating )
I decided to dispose our fleet to "convince" the persians to unload in our farm, the better place for us to kill them ( no defensive bonuses )
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0097.jpg

And as you can see, we got a GM ( settled of course ). Next turn the persians retreated, but the english unloaded a HA + 2 trebs ( ) and Gandhi also appeard with 1 galleon... the sweeping was fast that i forgot to take a screenie :wallbash:

Some turns later.....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0099.jpg

We have to admire the steadiness of the AI.....

Next turn Cyrus became stupid and divided the stack... Time for sweeping
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0100.jpg

Artilery came by... research set in Steam Power ( trailing for Assembly line + coal ( 2 turns invested )
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0101.jpg

Upgraded 4 of our cannons so far.....

Persians continue to move ships back and forth.... It seems that they are somewhat scared ;) . But they still have the 3 galleons that ran away in the beginning of turnset ( everytime I try to aproach them they run to safety... cowards ), so we should keep a eye.

We got a nifty event
Spoiler :

And we finish the turnset with this situation in the east ( only made a recon mission )

We need more navy..... in spite of having done a good bunch of frigates it is not enough. The persian attacks showed clearly that, and most surely all of the other AI will try their luck sooner or latter ( the spy and air recons showed that Zara and Gilga are assembling galleons in their capitals... we must assume that the other AI are doing the same ). The lack of oil will force us to spam frigates + ships of the line ( I would recommend at least 15 naval units in capital )

I suggest also that we attack the Persians to clear the menace: they are too near for confort

Joke ( a bad one.... )

- You know.... I couldn't find a fake TV.

Nice bit of defending there! :goodjob:

But I think it's time to roll out the forces, we can't win this game with defensive play. I think we should also switch back to scientists-heavy mode ... we need to get to destroyers before the AI get to Frigates ...

Target Gandhi first.

The workers are building a fort in the southest most tile, while I think a fort in one tile north would serve us better for creating a short cut route for our ships to go west.

>>>Save here ( shameless copy of Fox style )<<<
;) Unfortunately, I got lazy with clearing up my upload folders, so now I have to resort to using attachments (still has 18Mb :D).

Got it :bump:

Seems to be some heavy fighting coming up :trouble:

Destroyers are our objective, did I get it clear ?
Otherwise, I'll go for the India invasion.

@Greyfox

No destroyers before plastics ( no land oil + no uranium ) :p

I put the workers doing the fort there to have more range into Ethiopian lands, not fornaval uses ( my idea was to make forts in all of the non-BFC tiles to host more airships )

We'll have heavy problems due to Oz greed in the oil departement ( :gripe: ). No land oil = no planes + no tanks + no destroyers + no battleships ( MLG 5 syndrom  ). I think that we have to make some more Ships of the line to protect the frigate escorts....

And I would recommend to think infantry + arties, land a huge land stack and go by land ... we can't go berserk like in Fox 9 :(

I know we need Plastics + Combustion ... that's why there is no point going merchant heavy now ... we need to switch to scientists mode.

I know your purpose of the fort, i am saying a fort north is more useful (it can serve as port for airships as well as serve as naval shortcut).

We cannot wait for infantries, its pointless ... we simply don't have the money to upgrade troops ... so we must go RAZING now to collect money while AI don't have frigates.

Agreed with more ship of lines.

Just wanted to make this interesting for you :p

MLG5, aaah, so just where is your final report then :mischief:

Fun times to smack the enemy navy

Basically, one small failure to report, later though.

On the inherited, I switched Cuzco (as if we had other cities) to Ship of the Line.

Also, I prepared a full packed 4 galleons strike force of grens, arties and cannons, escorted by some frigates to go after the peaceful man.

Next turn, I spot these snacks on the Airship horizon:

I started the fort on GreyFox's suggestion - 1N to the current one.

As soon as Shaka came around, he got killed all the caravel escort and was left with 4 galleons on hand. As I didn't want him to land troops (Cuzco is, well, rather undefended to a AW emperor game standards), I set up the Wall of Frigates (TM) :

He turned around to flee but still it was too good an occasion to miss and I sunk his galleons next to Pasargardae.

Thinking 'Hey, look at the wi$e@ss I am sending three unescorted galleons while Inca is chasing Shaka', Cyrus managed to give us another fun time of the round

On the other side of the world, our forces were finally hitting the shores of India:

This nice city gets bombarded, attacked and razed from the ship on the next turn, getting us another annoying partisan event :

Anyway, back on our side of the world, Cyrus sent a more consistent force of 4 galleons and 4 or 5 caravels - no problemo. :deadhorse:

Steam Road discovered in 1722 AD, I started Railroad for Combustion.

Paliputra has been bombarded to 0% (took two turns - just the time to get the land troops on site), and here we go in 1728 AD:

Those partisans are just.... :gripe:

A counterstrike of some mounted units manages to kill three of our grens IBT... This is the failure of the round.
I regroup remaining (quite nifty) stuff on the hill and suggest going south for Madras.

Zara broke free and is no longer loser's (sorry, Gandhi's) vassal.

Here is what I left as an apetizer for the next player in the inherited turn:

Have fun!

Oh yeah, the joke (sure you already know it):

Oh my god, are we going to have these Partisan thingie for every city, no matter which Civ? :aargh: [pissed] :( :aargh: :gripe:

One question, from the screenshot, we should have one more GG born. What did you do to him? With these Partisan thingy becoming an universal phenomena (rather than localized to British as I initially thought), maybe we should really consider getting a morale promoted unit as cabledawg suggested.

Sorry, I've forgotten.

A GG was born and merged. Maybe I did a :smoke: move with him ?

Does anyone know the mechanics for this? I had it happen every city I razed in MLG5 but in the Fox09 it never happened

Lurker comment:

In my understanding, this event gets decided right at the start. You either get this event everytime or never.

Annoying thing is, Gandhi has plenty of cities...

Thanks for the explanation Meiz!

Indeed we'll be getting it all game. That's why I was warning you guys about it earlier  I don't know how a moral unit will help since moving off of a boat takes all of your movement points. The moral unit won't be able to move anyways so it doesn't make a difference...
