Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

There is. Go to the button with your profile avatar (your duck), then Preferences —> E-mail options. There you can check or uncheck getting notifications for PM‘s.
Thanks a lot!

I see this has the solution to @Takhisis' predicament as well

I think I did this, this worked well until I began again to receive some notifications in my email box. I don't know if this has to do with the problem the forum had with Outlook, but I clicked on one of those email in the mail itself to "not send any notification anymore" and it works !

This is not a question :)
I just want to express my sincere gratitude about the forum not requiring super complex passwords that cannot be remembered. It makes life so much easier when I can log in to my favorite forum easily at my workplace or anywhere I want.
Thank you!

Is there a good reason the cookie "xf_push_notice_dismiss" only has a 12 hour expiry? It means you get a "CivFanatics Forums would like your permission to enable push notifications" notification really frequently.

It's not something I seem to have control over :dunno:.
We have an option to permanently disable push notifications, in case that makes your life easier.
And for the record I confirm that it works. I said 'Never' once and no annoyance ever since.
Wish other sites were half as user friendly as CFC

Is there any way to post more than ten images per post? What if you use a combination of attachments and links to images?

No, I just want to display possibly more than ten images inline.
Out of curiosity, what size?

It might be convenient for you to have 10 images in the same post, but it can make it godawful slow for the page to load for some people.

Try putting them in a spoiler tag. It helps with page loading as well.

If you want to post so many images, I suggest you put 5 per post and use multiple posts. To keep them altogether, just make a post with 5, and reserve the next few posts with the text "reserved". Then when you are ready just edit in your pictures with the edit button.

Yes. You can only upload ten images and/or attachments per post, but you can hotlink images that are hosted externally, and there is a much higher limit there - I think it is 30 currently? It was 20 back in 2008, IIRC.

Those look like:

Code:
[IMG]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/da/Sid_Meier_-_Game_Developers_Conference_2010_-_Day_4_%283%29.jpg/416px-Sid_Meier_-_Game_Developers_Conference_2010_-_Day_4_%283%29.jpg?download[/IMG]

And the result:

416px-Sid_Meier_-_Game_Developers_Conference_2010_-_Day_4_%283%29.jpg

Traditionally, these images have mostly been uploaded to third-party image sites like Imgur. One thing to be aware of is that if you intend for the post's images to last for a long time, over time, many of those sites have either closed down, removed old images, or clamped down on hotlinking (the classic watermarked Photobucket images, for example). Thus, if you really want to ensure the image is still visible in 10 years, the attachment system (and splitting across multiple posts if need be) is the most reliable way, followed by hotlinking from a site where you are paying for the image hosting. At the same time, if you're just linking an image for someone to see next Tuesday, third-party sites are a good option that will avoid burdening the forum with the cost of hosting the image forever (which, accumulated over time, is why most free image hosting sites wind up closing, especially when they're primarily used for hotlinking and thus cannot derive any revenue from advertising).

You can do a mix of uploaded and hotlinked images in the same post as well. And you can hotlink from albums, e.g.:

Code:
[IMG]https://forums.civfanatics.com/media/shaka_1-jpg.7704/full[/IMG]

Result:

full

Source album post: https://forums.civfanatics.com/media/shaka_1-jpg.7704/ (note that adding "/full" lets you hotlink the image)

Great, that’s what I was hoping. Shame that width attributes are broken on image tags though.

It is? I'm using the width attribute for attachments without issue. Are you using the WYSIWYG editor or the source view? Works from the WYSIWYG. I've noticed similar issues with URL links. Doing it from the source view will fail. You have to use the WYSIWYG first so it basically white lists the address, then it works from the source view after that.

One technique I am using to increase the number of images per post, is to create animated gifs. Here is a free online utility for building them.

➡️ Ezgif.com

Another technique is to use "smilies" (aka: emoticons) rather than an image, where ever possible. So I use the blue triangle and arrow buttons for navigation, off site links (example above), downloads, etc, plus things like the exclamation sign and check box for tutorial stuff. It's not always the greatest selection, but it helps.
