I'm curious as to what all the terraforming spells in the game are. (In one, solid list, to help keep them easier to remember.)

The ones I remember at the moment:

Vitalize: nature 3

desert --> plains, plains --> grassland, a couple of others?

Scorch?: fire (something)

Changes some types to desert (don't remember the exact ones at the moment)

Sanctify?: Life 1?

Gets rid of hell terrain

There's another one, i think (or may be falsely remembering) that gets rid of tundra.

Are these right, am I missing any, etc.?

... and Fire 1, Blaze, clears jungles and forests. Illian Temple of the Hand converts everything in the BFC to ice.

5x5 square actually.

As for blaze, note that it only creates smoke, which may eventually turn into flames, and flames leave "burnt forest" which eventually grows into new forest and then forest (even if it was a jungle that you burned down). Ring of flames (AV divine spell) and pyre zombie explosions also create smoke. And as long as we're considering forests, bloom (FoL divine spell) plants new forests.

It's worth mentioning that flames can cause smoke in adjacent forests and jungles, which can in turn become flames and spread more smoke. A single smoke tile can potentially set off a raging forest fire covering the whole continent.

well if I remember correctly, smoke has a small chance of going aflame... almost as small as new forest growing into forests... It took forever and was not reliable.
or maybe that changed recently.

I think the chances of Smoke turning to Fire, and Fire giving off new smoke, is related to the AC counter somehow.

Wonder also works as an exceptionally unreliable terraformer. Snowfall can work to temporarily transform terrain to ice. And of course the hell terrain formed by Hyborem or other things(entropy node flare) is an exceptionally negative terraforming. The various constellations can have effects on the terrain. The genesis ritual also terraforms the land in a radical way.

Does any of these remove marshland/swamps?

A Temple of the Hand will change Marsh and Shallows to Ice. None of the other methods will permanently remove them.

Edit: Actually, I'm not sure about Genesis. I can't recall whether it changes Marsh.

Dam... what kind of insane desision was it to make it so?

Thanks for the list. (I'd also known about a lot of these it turns out, but it's good to have them listed.)

Another related question, how exactly does the New forest--> forest transition work? forest --> ancient forest I'm pretty sure is 3% per turn chance, while I have read that new forest-->forest is a similar method, but what are the exact mechanics?

(Also, I can't be the only one who finds it somewhat funny that "Ancient" forests can actually be quite young, even compared to regular forests. :) Interesting how these standard fantasy descriptions work.)
