I think the argument, that got lost a long time ago (or at least when I checked out of the thread), was that all the civil rights associated with marriage should be extended to gay couples so long as they are called civil unions or something else because the churches might get their feelings hurt. It doesn't help that the only laws on the books right now give these civil rights to married couples.

I was referring to Ernst Röhm, the openly-gay leader of the SA, who was assassinated during the Night of Long Knives. Hitler, as far as we can tell, was as straight as the next incestuous pervert.
