GeneNES

With a snapping sound, lights crackled on in a large, enclosed space. A large group of penguins and polar bears could be seen taking part in civil discussion, and several uncivil acts of miscellaneous violence. A coalition of assorted pandas, otters and Safavid Persians made up the NAO delegation. Various Owls, Leperchauns, Vegetable Overlords, Hedgehogs, Hamsters, Moose, Non-NAO Pandas and Otters, and Walrii were also to be found in the area.

“But yes.” Noted Penguin Technician Pikt, “NESLife has been updating a little slowly lately.”

“Though the artwork is fantastic...” quietly noted one Otter.

“Stop whining, Daftpanzer has a life too!” noted one Hamster, reaching for his death ray. His intentions may never be known, as a polar bear stepped on him a second later.

“Anyhoo,” resumed Pikt, “I had a thought. What if we ran an inverted NESlife? Horrible artwork, but quick updates?”

“I thought that we were parts of an NES, not running a NES.” Grunted one larger polar bear.

“I know, it’s like... meta2. Weird.”

“But still an interesting idea.”

“Indeed. And that is why I brought you all here- To start a genetic NES!”

“Isn’t it a ripoff of Spore the NES as well?”

“No, our artwork is worse. Tekk!”

“Yes?”

“Start the life processes!”

“Affirmative.”

Lights focused on a large tank of nutrient-rich water in the center of the building.

“Initiating time field.”

A bluish hazy field buzzed into appearance around the tank.

“Electrical stimulus initiated. Hydrogen/Carbon/Oxygen/Nitrogen/Phosphorus/Sulphur Compounds: Check. Complex molecules: Check. We have nucleotides. We have phospholipids. Amino Acids: Check... We have membrane formation... we have proteins... we have... LIFE!”

Applause echoed throughout the chamber. On an overhead screen, a magnified picture appeared. It was...

“It’s a... bubble.” Noted a hedgehog.

“It’s a cell! Isn’t it magnificent?”

One of the circular things started to break in half. Half of the audience applauded, the other half stared confusedly. Pikt let out one shout before croud noise drowned out all else.

“Let the evolutionary wars begin!”

Rules
Simple. You take one creature from the update, and evolve it. I will then draw it (note that the drawings are extremely simple) in the update. Evolution is much less structured here than in other NESes. Just describe what is changed and write a brief description. An example can be found in the starting stats. Things you add would be along the lines of 'Cell Wall', Flagella, 'Digestion', etc. 1 Trait and One Evolution Per turn. Alternatively, you could start to turn your species into a multicellular organism. We'll see how things go!

Stats

Protus
Evolved From: Primordial Soup
The very first lifeform. A small, reproducing cell which feeds on nutrients it comes across.

Novus
Evolved From: Protus
The second lifeform. With an enclosed nucleus and internal membranes, this species and its successors are poised for great things.

Update 1- The ‘Things Get Started’ Era

“We are not playing god here because, according to Exhibit A, Abaddon’s Signature, he is god, and we have it on good authority that we aren’t playing Abaddon. I rest my case.”

“Uh, so your claim is one sentence?”

“Yes.”

“There wasn’t even a judge here.”

“I rested my case.”

“This is a gross miscarriage of justice.”

“I could retrial us.”

“Just forget it.”

“Attention.”

The various denizens of the hall froze.

“What is it?” growled one particularly off-white polar bear.

“We have endosymbiosis! Our first Eukaryotes are here.”

The crowd gave an uncertain applause.

“One cell absorbed another cell and now it is... better.”

The crowd applauded. Tekk rolled his eye.

Novalus
Evolved from: Novus
New evolution: Chloroplasts
The Novalus is the first lifeform to take advantage of the sun's energy. It was the first to develop the organelles necessary to absorb and process sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.

Novus
Evolved From: Protus
The second lifeform. With an enclosed nucleus and internal membranes, this species and its successors are poised for great things.

Blobus
Evolved From: Novus

This evil cell has developed a way to engulf and 'digest' other cells it may collide with randomly, if they are small enough.

---

@Lord Iggy, this looks cool :D Also I forgive you for the death of the space hamster, since apparently he was going for his weapon first.

Cicilius
Evolved from: Novus
New Evoloution: Cilia Hairs
Cicili move around with metaphorical oars of little hairs that beat rythmically.

Novus Parasite
Evolution: Parasitism
Novus Parasite depend on other cells to live, using thier energy.

Novus Predator
Evolved from: Novus
Evolution: Digestive acids
The Novus Predator feeds off of other organisms and has created ways of doing so more efficiently.

EDIT: Sorry my computer spat out a second post

Mmm I think try this Nes, and do something a little different.

Protus
Evolved From: Primordial Soup
The very first lifeform. A small, reproducing cell which feeds on nutrients it comes across.

Spiktus
Evolved from: Protus
New evolution: Spikes/Needles (Something like that)
Description: The Novus was not the only lifeform which came from the Protus. Spiktus as grown spikes to stop other cells eating it without suffering damage or dyeing.

How developed can we assume the Novus and Protus to be? Do they both, for instance, have mitochondria? What sorts of organelles are currently part of the Novus and Provus?

Everything has mitochondria, though the Novii are only the most primitive eukaryotes, so they have yet to develop many organelles. They have enough to survive, but not significantly more.

I don't know how this game works so I'll just make something up.

Bitus
Evolved From: Protus
New Evolution: Attachment and Endocytosis
A virus, technically it is not alive. This virus can attach to Protus and inject its own DNA via endocytosis.

Latrocinus
Evolved from: Protus
Produces and secretes a form of plasmid to transfer its genetic materials to other organisms.

Update 2- The ‘Players Start Making Stuff’ Era

“Time Field Disengaged. Here are our samples.”

The crowd gathered around the massive pool and gazed up at the screens.

“This first specimen here is a Novalus. It’s quickly becoming one of the bases of the ecosystem as easily available nutrients run about. They’re really just simple photosynthesizers, but they’re the only ones so far.

Now... this wiggly one is a Novaloco. It’s got a little flagella so it can happily wiggle its way around its environment, thus being able to cover greater areas. However, its energy consumption roughly evens out with the gains this provides, so it hasn’t completely taken over.

The Blobus is pretty much just a big predator. It is large, and absorbs anything that comes along. However, while it’s doing well from that, it’s also a victim of several of the nastier things that have appeared here. But I’ll get to them later.

The Cicilius has another means of propelling itself- Cilia, small ‘hairs’ around its outer membrane. They aren’t quite as fast as the Novalii, but they have the advantage of being able to sense things around them much better than any other animal.

This Parasite here has an effective survival mechanism- attach to something successful. Right now, most of them just latch on to a Blobus or one of the many Novalii floating around, and they pretty much get a free ride.

The Predator is one of the nastier... well, for a cell, one of the nastier things in the tank. It’s developed digestive organelles making it extremely effective at breaking down every cell it comes across and absorbs.

The Spiktus is a little prokaryote with hard protein spikes. It’s thriving with no predation, though the energy required to make the spikes still leaves the Protus as a viable lifeform.

Now the Barfus is one of the more interesting, if rare, cells. They spit out digestive enzymes on contact with other cells, then absorb them. However, this system isn’t quite as efficient as those of the Blobus or Predator, so these guys are still quite rare. They do have an advantage of being able to deter predation with their excretions, though there aren’t yet any active predators here.

The Bitus is a very simple descendent of the Protus, which is quite similar to a simplified Parasite. It is absorbed by a larger cell, then hijacks its nucleus, creating new Bitii. Large Blobii are particularly vulnerable to this, as you can see in the picture.

Finally, the Ramvus. These cells are still quite simple, though they’ve developed a protein spike. The spike’s use is limited, however, for the most part it’s just a large defensive measure, though it can also lyse nearby cells, releasing their juicy goodness for itself and all of the neighbours.”

The crowd was silent.

“What does lyse mean?”
