Even not failing. I know a woman who is sort of happy running a beauty supply shop, but it's a hard grind. She looked at selling the business and couldn't get anywhere near what she wanted for it, partly because she has, as she puts it, two hundred thousand dollars hanging on the walls. That's the inventory she feels comfortable having in stock. If she ran it down to 150K she'd be telling people she was out of stuff and the rest of the stuff would be less likely to move, so she has to sell the business basically with all the inventory but no one wants to pay for it. She's successful, but she's trapped. Fire and insurance is a lot easier path to retirement than selling. She'd never do it on purpose, but if it went up in a riot she wouldn't cry about it either.
