[RD] George Floyd and protesting while black

I have no idea why Target are being especially hit.

Target has enough political clout in this state to do something like that.

Isn't it amazing how with a little editing your post solves its own mystery?

How has Target applied their political clout, previously?

Has target made any political statements ? I am genuinely unaware.

Fair enough, wasn’t aware.

Yea I was going to point out that Target is based in Minneapolis. Complicity by inaction is definitely a thing we talk about it in other contexts all the time.

By and large when a business "gets torched" the most likely suspect is usually the owner. I find it pretty interesting how when some sort of protest is happening a whole bunch of people jump up lamenting for the poor business owners as if that were suddenly not true.

Do you have a link for that?

The protesters in Chicago are getting violent. Just watched them breaking the windows of a bank and rushing it. The building my daughter lives in is surrounded and no one is getting in or out. They're goading the police as much as possible throwing stuff an them and attempting to charge their positions. I see more people getting injured in the future.

No, the owners are destroying their property

The only reason anyone thinks I like the Democrats is because of how much I hate the Republicans.

Didn't you campaign for Hillary or Obama? After Bush and Iraq I hated the GOP more, Russia Gate reminded me why the Democrats are so deserving of hatred.

@Ajidica

Trump took to Twitter, calling black protesters “THUGS”’ and threatening to send in military force. “When the looting starts, the shooting starts!” he declared.

Protesters or looters and arsonists?

“But going after a Target crosses the line. Can’t they find a more peaceful way, like kneeling in silence?”

Would be more powerful

Cub has a liquor store, and a name that kinda sounds like that of the store where G. Floyd allegedly passed a counterfeit $10 or $20 -- I've heard both denominations -- that got this whole thing started.

I thought he forged a check or something. How in the hell did he get his hands on counterfeit money? I cant imagine he's got a press in the basement, someone else could have passed it off on him.

A failing business goes up in flames, yes the owner is a possible suspect, trying to collect insurance money. Don't know if anyone has done this during a riot.

Counterfeit bills aren't always super high tech, that's why businesses that are not banks sometimes spot them. I remember a local case of counterfeit 20s trying to be used at a bar. And yes, it is possible the person who had the bill was duped and didn't know it was fake.

Even not failing. I know a woman who is sort of happy running a beauty supply shop, but it's a hard grind. She looked at selling the business and couldn't get anywhere near what she wanted for it, partly because she has, as she puts it, two hundred thousand dollars hanging on the walls. That's the inventory she feels comfortable having in stock. If she ran it down to 150K she'd be telling people she was out of stuff and the rest of the stuff would be less likely to move, so she has to sell the business basically with all the inventory but no one wants to pay for it. She's successful, but she's trapped. Fire and insurance is a lot easier path to retirement than selling. She'd never do it on purpose, but if it went up in a riot she wouldn't cry about it either.

Low barrier to entry combined with high barrier to exit is bad for the people in such activities.
But the high barrier to exit the baddest.

The police can't respond any other way to this because they fundamentally don't believe anything is wrong with what was done to George Floyd. Police, in the eyes of police, completely have the right to do whatever they wish, and they are only growing more unrestrained in trying to beat acceptance of that into the population. It's all they know, and all they can do.

Reform won't change this, only abolition will.

What's sad is those that kiss the boot and still think the institution is worth saving, won't be spared from the inevitable violence by the police either

They just don't seem to get that fundamentally the police are broken and without a complete overhaul this problem will only get worse, so they double down because thats the only way to make sense of things in a broken system they've been told all their lives is the highpoint of human civilization; capitalism.

Are the shops demolished to warn owners to not call cops on thieves or am I missing something? I am puzzled whats happening. Is it in Minneapolis or in whole US?

It's spread to over a dozen big cities now, for sure. I don't have an accurate count but it's from San Francisco to Atlanta to NYC.

What do you think happens in a capitalist society when the poorest suddenly have an opportunity to gain items they might not otherwise have been able to obtain through legal or normal means?
