Ghandi and his many hordes (Let's play!)

Ok, so I retired the map and re-created from scratch.. Same settings as before, here is turn 0 and the map..

I have incense, sheep and silk.. Not really that good of a start. But you guys are the experts, I'm just the noob not trying to get steamrolled lol

Learn to expand more wisely on the lower levels. .

fixed that for you, Gumbo

Cox - yeah, that game is in pretty bad shape. I think you've picked up a couple of pointers so far, but to really make this work to your benefit you really need to sloooooow things down tremendously. Much smaller turnsets and really listen to feedback and make decisions based on consensus. (you can receive bad advice here too..ha)

Haha yeah, I'll slow it down a bit.. I should probably reload this map yeah? But I think I will just take it to 10-15 turns max then wait for you guys.

I'm just loving this game so much that I want to keep going haha... But I need to learn to walk before I try to run.

Cox - you know you can use Alt-G to simply regen the map or the button in the menu. if something doesn't look appealing you don't have to stick with it...there's no harm in regen.

There could be more food here though, but the warrior ain't gonna reveal jack squat for decision making in this case.

potential to lose something 1NE of sheep, but I'm inclined to move settler 1W to see if more food or you just SIP and pray for more food..gotta be more than plains hill sheep which is a no count food resource

i guess it is helpful regardless to talk analysis of Turn 0 regardless of visible resources. Just remember that FOOD is always the most important thing..good food.

It's very common here when new dudes come here for advice and run these games to get excited. In fact it happens almost every time someone posts a shadow game. My advice is always to play this forum game here slow as you can. You can always run another game in parallel to play however fast you want while waiting for advice to trickle in.

..omg..that start is just the worst...seriously for the standard mapscripts like Pangaea that seems broken..there's no explanation why it basically gave you no food in the BFC. Should not happen.

you are using BAT so I assume you have the game all patched up

Haha.. good job on the 1W recommendation! I have cows AND sheep in the BFC.. warrior revealed that I am on the coast though. I think I will settle on that and start from there.

no no no...that is just horrible..

reroll and don't come back here until you show us a big fat wet corn or pigs..;)

and verify that your game is all patched up

honestly, those PH sheep are so bad that if I have other good food I like to mine that tile early for an uber mine

FOOD,man...FOOOOOOOOOD

(another note..things like incense and silk and stuff are pretty irrelevant for a long time and never indicative of a value start..not like in say Civ V)

lol.. I thought I was patched up? 3.19 patch no? How can I check what version I have?

Also wet corn means Flood Plains and corn or pigs on a water plains tile thing? lol

THERE!!! I re-rolled I have 1 wet corn, 1 regular corn and 1 rice in my BFC.. better now? lol :D :D :D

actually 2 wet corns...i guess that'll do ha

3.19 yeah

Oh wow didnt even see that it was FW.. I thought it was a normal tile.. so I SIP and moved the warrior 1NW in a counter clock-wise pattern.

I guess my next question is, when do you build military and when do you expand? Or should I not worry about that right now and just work on getting my start going?

@TheCox- More than a year ago a new player came here to the forums to gain help and advice. Like you this player was not experienced in either the civilization franchise nor TBS(turn based strategy) games. Seraiel and others tried to help him, even suggesting that he begin on noble difficulty. After great effort to help this new player, who would not slow down, nor take the advice given, the new player choose to give up. He became frustrated and decided to stop playing civ entirely. A shame really, to lose a player like that. I know most players- Lymond, Seraiel and others will urge you to begin playing on noble. But you need to understand that the developers of civ4 put 3 difficulty lvls below noble for a reason. Noble was intended for experienced civ players from early versions of the game. Settler-warlord were meant for beginner players like yourself. You have posted in another thread that you are both new to civ and the genre. To put into very simple terms you need to take "baby steps." If you are not comfortable playing on noble there is no shame in going down to warlord or lower. You need to play and learn on a difficulty lvl that you are comfortable with. If the more experienced players here on the forum genuinely want to help you, they will except you playing on a lower lvl of difficulty. I notice you are using bat/bug mod. This adds a great deal more information on screen, which could easily give a new player information overload. While this is certainly my opinion, if I were you I would play lower than noble4-6 games. Just as a way of going thru the motions. Founding cities, building a military, managing workers, dealing with a nations economy, and of course fighting wars. The game is very forgiving of mistakes made by the player, but on noble , that starts to change. Play 4-6 easy games to get used to the game mechanics and concepts. Win a few easy games to build confidence, and gain experience. Post shadow games so other players can play along with you- even if those shadow games aren't on noble. And remember if you feel frustrated that's ok. Don't let others push you to playing on a lvl your not comfortable with. Baby steps. Settler - warlord are there for a reason. It is far better in the long run that you play and win on easy difficulty lvls, than play and lose then give up in frustration. Good luck and happy civing.

post the save

to add to cfc bit above, you can always run some other games at lower levels to practice as well and get a feel for the difference and pace of things. With that said, I still wholeheartedly encourage you to run shadow games here on Noble or higher. There are folks that just don't take to the genre, like cfc mentioned, or just aren't not patient. I have a feeling you are not one of those peeps.

ok..advice on this one. Nice start..good food, some hills, and tons of forests (always good)

AHAG>BW a no-brainer

improve corn 1Ne first, ofc, and then the rest of food. (even though wet corn is better than wet rice I'm almost inclined to start the rice after the 1st corn since you can start improving immediately with fast worker and the commerce doesn't hurt either) I think you can grow fast to size four here and do a 4>2 settler whip into a worker.

with that food, this may bring a good opportunity of food sharing your second city - we'll discuss that later after you scout.

yeah, send that warrior 2NW to that hill and then start circling around your cap in a zig zag..try to use hills to keep better views as you move.

This is a start to work with! Agriculture first, build a worker 1st, then warriors until size 4. Next techs would be bronze working, pottery for granary would be good too.

Maybe lymond mistyped AH or has more info on that, but I would wait on that

Edit: stop when starting the settler and post a save and some screenshots to decide where to put 2nd city

yep - mistyped

Here is the turn 0 save. Also, attached in the picture, based off recommendations, I moved the warrior 2NW to the hill, revealed double fur and marble to the north-northwest areas.

Started on AG and a worker. So far so good, and not dead lol.. and Lymond, but zig zag you mean like in a Z type pattern? Like 2W then 3SE then 2SW again? Or something like that.

Ghengis is somewhere in my vicinity... Directly to my west. I think from what I have read/seen we should probably knock him out of the game before he gets too big and expansive... also, I have cows to the west and SE and a gold mine to the south.

In regards to cfc, I definitely agree with your statements and your recommended ideas. I like all of those. I do like a challenge and for me, just because I can't get something done right, doesn't mean I won't give up. But I had thought about while reading your ideas maybe do some other games on warlord or lower while the forum helps me with this noble game.. This way if I make mistakes, I won't make them in the game I DO care about :)

He means to move in a spiral pattern around the capital. The tree pattern though indicates we are in the upper north, so I would focus south, but try to keep exploring. Warriors that you build should go out exploring too.

Ah ok, well that makes more sense.. I found Ghengis immediately to my west, but I'm thinking, once my worker is done with the farm on the corn, go to the other corn and build a farm there, should be 2 by then. I'm also thinking maybe AH would be the next best route in order to get the cows?

Focus on your immediate needs now... BW should definitely be next ...AH we can decide after. POT may be better now and I think you can probably do food sharing with second city.

ha..zig zag wasn't meant to hold you to a fixed pattern, but just to make sure you remove all the fog around your city...that can mean not always moving in a straight line and hitting the hills.

Yep first few warriors should head out to explore but not too far. once you reveal a good bit of fog ..say in 10 tile radius...hold warriors back to do what we call "spawn-busting" to prevent barbs spawning nearby. a unit can bust an area of 5X5 tiles regardless of visibility of those tiles.

We'll think about GK later, but he should not be a big issue on this level
