Give me 18, but not on Earth - new PBEM

On topic:

I think it is wise that each player shares via pm his emailadress with the player before and the player after him.

PS. do it in a format bots can't recognize:
e.g. firstname dot lastname at xyz dot us

Nah - put me on the reserve list or available to fill in. BTW, I don't use the tracker ... I prefer my auto emailer.
Ruffs emailer program works fine when he's played with us using PBEM Tracker in other games. It sure doesn't slow down his play or his troops. ;)

I think we all should send you our emails for game play by PM. I can't get any email addresses from PBEM Tracker as they are linked to the individual profile. Mine is on the way.

In the beginning…

… there was nothing. And I could write here about the big bang theory, the earth cools, humans begin walking the earth and settle into tribes, blah blah blah. You know the story. But have you ever thought about the idea of parallel universes? How there could be another you in almost the exact same world, except there are slight differences. Instead of being into Civ 4 seven years after it came out, maybe you still play Diablo 2. Maybe you are more modern and are obsessed with World of Warcraft. These would be very close parallel universes, almost mirror images of one another with only slight changes.

Think of when you are out shopping and look at yourself when there are two slightly angled mirrors. There are hundreds of you standing in line into a seemingly infinite tunnel. The main reflection is like that other you that plays Diablo instead of Civ. The second one behind him might play World of Warcraft. A few hundred down the line and maybe you are a professional athlete of some sort. These are all the same universe, just parallel timelines. Some of them are further from this world’s version of you and some are closer. Really stop and think about this for a minute. We can see hundreds of our alternate universe selves. But its more than that, not just thousands. Not millions. Literally an infinite number of yourself, with slight changes from one to another making some of them grow into completely different versions of you.

Now I’d like to take you on a walk down the hallway you see in the mirrors. The farther you walk, the farther you are getting away from the current you. Actually, lets not walk, lets run. Run faster, because we have a long way to go, the door is about 15 miles down the hallway…

Good, you made it! 15 miles is a long way, you must be exhausted! Better perk up though, because once we go through this door your life will change. This door leads to another parallel universe with another you inside of it. But we came a long way – this universe isn’t even remotely close to the one you know anymore. This universe has many fundamental changes, most of which even I don’t know. Here’s what I do know – the earth formed differently in this world. Anyone who’s ever watched “Jurassic Park” knows about the concept of Chaos Theory. I’m no expert, but one of the concepts is that there is no pattern to the world; start a ball rolling downhill and it will take a different path each time you push it.

This is what happened here. This is still the third planet from the sun (or is it?). The approximate distance from the sun is about right to create water and allow primitive life forms to survive. But here is where things start changing. The tectonic plates that form the land masses we know in our world are purely based on the randomness of the cooling of the earth. In this universe, the plates cooled differently. How they formed is anyone’s guess, because there is no internet, no computers and no satellites. You see in this world the ice age didn’t just last 10,000 years, it lasted 20,000. Humans developed at a similar rate, but with most of the world encased in ice, they could not settle down into what we call primitive civilizations. They were forced to keep on the move, tracking what little food there was for an extra 10,000 years. The population boom happened much more slowly, and the result of all this is that your alternative self isn’t a computer gamer, he is a hunter. One of the top hunters of his tribe actually. The Ice Age has long since ended, and your peers are finally realizing that the fruits of the earth can be harvested and you may be able to stay in your current encampment permanently.

There are 18 of you that can travel through this door and see what this alternative you is dealing with. You have been selected because you are the ones in this universe that will become the leaders of your respective tribes. Some of you were elected to lead the tribe due to your hunter-gatherer prowess and leadership abilities. Some of you were thrust into the role simply because your father before you led the tribe. And some of you took control of the tribe by killing the one before you. However the means, the result is the same – your people are looking up to you to help them survive. Nay, not just survive, THRIVE. Expand. Build an empire. An empire that the world will look up to. An empire that will stand the test of time.

Open the door and look in.

This is your world now.

These are your people.

This is your… civilization!

Game is underway folks, the turn is loaded on PBEMtracker to Calanthian. Apologies for this taking so long, I had a few bugs and problems getting it off the ground. The good news is we now have multiple mirror games already ready that I can use! :p But we are rolling now and on our way!

I appreciate the posts about emails... if everyone doesn't mind PMing me your email addy, I will put them down in my file and send out a mass email with the turn order and everyones emails to see. But for now we will be using PBEMtracker... and we're off!

PS since even the first turn is going to take a few days... I have figured out all of the random leaders and updated them on PBEMtracker!

I am heading out for now, but keep it moving folks and enjoy!

Oh what are the odds, Mansa again? I've rolled him in my two latest MP games, kinda tired of him. I knew I should have just picked one..

Oh and about my turn window, monday-thursday I wont have a problem playing 17-19 GMT, but weekends I probably wont be able to play till later, just saw now you changed my hours..

Thats funny... actually the odds were pretty good - I had issues with the first 2 times setting it up. The first launch the game didnt save after I did my turn, so the folder is corrupt.

The second time I apparently didnt name the game exactly right so it wouldnt load onto PBEMtracker.

The third time it worked... and you got Mansa. The first two you had other people though!

and dont worry about the hours. Nothing we can do now other than try to keep it moving. Hopefully because its the weekend others will be up later too... its only once every 3 days anyway!

I propose a standard;
Diplomacy, can only occur after Leaders meet.

What did you name it?

I just named it "Give me 18" but PBEM tracker required the name match exactly. I would have either needed to wait for the PBEM trackers owner to modify the site to allow that, or get everyone to sign onto a new game on there, which would have taken another day at least.

I kept the game file so we can use it for the "mirror game" which I will work on launching next week sometime.

As for the proposal - I guess I just assumed that was already implied? I agree, it just doesnt make sense to be talking to a leader that you don't know about yet...

Count1 - I've just started using it too, but its a very simply website. There should be a way to search for a game, or browse games. Find the game mentioned, you'll need to put in a password but then should be able to join the game - we currently have 3 open spots on that site.

It's used as a server to upload the turns to. Once you finish your turn you upload onto the site, then it alerts who is next on the list and they can just go to the site - no need for individual emails. Should be a good tool to use, and the creator of the site is actually in the game, so any support we need should be available :)

Good ideas! I'm keeping notes, and making changes as I have time.

I love the idea of the site and so far so good. I can already give a few tweaks:

- Right now theres an edit check that doesnt allow you to load up a turn unless the Civ game name matches the PBEMtracker name exactly... this is a good feature, but I don't know that its 100% necessary. Maybe have it give a warning to alert the user that it may be the wrong game, but allow them to load anyway if need be. My second iteration of this game didn't load because of this - although admittedly I should have been more careful and it wouldn't have been an issue if I had used it ever before!

- I don't know what happens when its a persons turn, but an email sent to the sign-up address would be ideal to alert them that the turn is on them. This may happen already, i wouldnt know yet since I haven't gotten my second turn :p

But definitely don't worry about it - I love the site already and appreciate the efforts as I'm sure many others do. Its a great concept, my props to you. I may be able to organize a game like this, but if you asked me to design a website I would be as blind as a bat!

Thanks. These are excellent suggestions. You're right about the game name... Something needs to be a little less strict there. Yep, the user is notified by email, and text (if they specified a mobile email address) when a turn is uploaded for them.

I think - at least - a few minutes of communal sympathy ought to be offered to Calanthian.

He nobly offered to sit out and produce a map so everyone gets a balanced start.

This was declined democratically, and he gets the bad position.
