Greatest Movie Soundtracks

This is Spinal Tap. End of discussion.

Scarface seems pretty crappy to me. Only bad thing about that movie is when they are in dance clubs and they are playing crappy 80's music that did not stand the test of time.

pretty much anything by John Williams is the greatest.

You are missing the point. The point is that the first 10 seconds of Push it to the Limit are AWESOME. Max out volume and put it on loop, to be as cool as me.

Tron Legacy. From what I know the unprecedented and until now unique fusion of epic score music and electronic music. The concert of fine strings and melodic or hard but never crude electronic music. No wonder it is especial, it is the only movie score known to me which has been created by a successful band of popular instrumental music: Daft Punk. And well, it IMO simply sounds awesome.

I don't know that I would go so far as to say "of all time" in the genre of music, which is kinda like saying "what form of magic is best?" But I am still going to compliment you on picking out Tron Legacy as having awesome tunes.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Is this really a question?

Agreed.

Spoiler :
However, don't forget the Pink Panther by Henry Mancini.

(Not the theme from Pink Panther, but another notewothy tune)

He also made the music for Charade

Lalo Schifrin's score for Dirty Harry is another great. Cool, funky, freefloating jazz. (skip to 1:50 where it pick's up the pace)

Lalo Schifrin was also the man behind the theme for Mission: Impossible. "Danube Incident" was later used by Portishead in Sour Times

...

John Williams is so utterly overrated in my humble opinion. But then again, the whole star wars francise is overrated, so there.

I just realized the spoiler-tag should be used more in this thread.

I'd classify soundtracks into two categories. One using originally created instrumental (mostly) music, and the other using songs that already existed.

For soundtracks with songs that already existed I'd have to go with The Crow, and Pulp Fiction.

And I still stand by John Williams soundtracks. Jaws, Star Wars (and sequels), Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark (and sequels), Born on the 4th of July, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Harry Potter (not all of them, just a couple), Munich, and a bunch of others.
