Lightest = 1 "title", Mid = 2 "titles", Darkest = 3 "titles".
I can only make out 2 colours.

Student teams are given standard, interchangeable components, e.g. promoters, terminators, and reporters.
They use those, and new ones of their own design, to create...
 
From the components they were given, I thought some biological programming / artificial life competition, but google is failing me.
 
Perhaps some lesser "world" prize given by a major prize giver. ie The Nobel Prize for writing assembly instruction.

I think this looks a bit easier. Now I just need to decide what to plot.
 
Here we go. The greys are "None", "I do not have data" or "I made a mistake". I may post a new one if I fill in any of the holes.
